[Flashcoders] Creating a scrollable list: adding components to the scrollpane contents

2006-09-01 Thread Matt Bennett

Hello Flashcoders,

I'm building a scrollable list, and I keep track of the list items
with a Collection. I'm having trouble adding items to it - I think I'm
overwriting some instance variables somewhere.

In the code below, listContainer is a reference to the contents of a
ScrollPane component:

var listContainer = scrollPane.content;

Here's my function to add a list item:

  function addListItem(symbolName, props)
  {
  // Create the content (instance name: _itemX)
  var instanceName = this.createUniqueInstanceName();
  var item = listContainer.createClassObject(symbolName,
instanceName,
this.getNextHighestDepth(), props);

  //add to list items
  listItems.addItem(item);

  trace();
  trace(debugging addItem);
  var iterator = listItems.getIterator();
  while(iterator.hasNext()) {
  var thisitem = iterator.next();
  trace(this item: +thisitem+; type:
+thisitem.className);
  }
  trace();

  return item;
  }

After adding 3 items, the debug trace looks like this:

debugging addItem
this item: ; type: undefined
this item: ; type: undefined
this item: _level0.QUESTION
PAD.contentWidget.questionList.scrollPane.spContentHolder._item2;
type: View

I assumed that I was overwriting an instance name somewhere, but I
also traced the contents of listContainer with a for-in loop. This is
the output after the first item is added:

this item: 2441; type: undefined; text: undefined
...other irrelevant stuff
this item: true; type: undefined; text: undefined
this item: _level0.QUESTION
PAD.contentWidget.questionList.scrollPane.spContentHolder._item0;
type: View; text: question 1

And this the output after the second item is added:

this item: 2441; type: undefined; text: undefined
...other irrelevant stuff
this item: true; type: undefined; text: undefined
this item: _level0.QUESTION
PAD.contentWidget.questionList.scrollPane.spContentHolder._item1;
type: View; text: question 2

So it looks to me like I'm actually overwriting each _itemX instance
on listContainer - and hence the references in the Collection become
null pointers.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Many thanks,
Matt.

Re: [Flashcoders] RE: Images stay on memory forever?

2006-09-01 Thread Dimitrios Bendilas

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your reply!

I tried everything you described here. Unfortunately, I still got the same
problem.

I guess I'm not doing something right here...

This is my code now:

_root.attachMovie(p1, p1, 10);
_root.attachMovie(p2, p2, 20);

n = 1;

btn.onRelease = function():Void {
_root[p+n].gotoAndStop(2); // frame 2 is empty
_root[p+n].removeMovieClip();
n++;
}

I even tried removing the movie clip on the next frame, after calling
gotoAndStop(2).

Still the same.

Any thoughts?

Dimitrios

hi Dimitrios,

re: Anyone got any idea?

 We had problems last year with something similar, loading 6 layers of
tiles in a 10 x 10 grid from the terraserver:
http://www.davidmatthews.com/dad/07-03-05-maplicator.swf  press n
slide/pan, double click n hold slide to zoom.

 Turns out .jpg's decompress to over 3 times their size to render in the
player.

 The solution we used to get rid of the memory bloat is to use loadmovie
into target clips, which throws the previous .jpg's out of the clip and
player - replacing it with the new content.

 For a greater number of loaded movies, when we change layers in the
maplicator for example, we actually move to a blank frame in the target
clip's timeline.

 By moving to a frame where the target clips no longer exist we force the
player to abandon the previously loaded .jpg's along with their holder
clips which also frees memory because those targets and their content are
no longer anywhere in the timeline or player.

 Because the .jpg's are still in the browser cache (but not in the
player), when the user zooms out and we move back to the empty target
clips in their timeline, reloading those .jpg's is instantaneous, as they
are not reoaded from the server.

hth,
Dave_Matthews

p.s. Martin, is this true? - does the player really NOT render things
placed way off stage?

 Im not sure if this is still the case in fp8 but i know that in previous
versions i would also move a clip to -1,-1 to stop the renderer
from

including it.

Sounds perfectly normal to me, making something invisble in flash doesnt
mean it
will unload the content from memory, in fact it doesnt necessarily mean it
wont

get rendered.

Well, remoting data takes less bandwidth than XML data so if traffic is a

[Flashcoders] Problem with parsing Webservice result correctly!

2006-09-01 Thread Martin Baltzer Hennelund
Hi,

Flash apparently fails to correctly parse a webservice function that
returns a class/Object/Struct (Using Csharp to create the webservice).

The following is returned from the service when hitting it in IE and is
perfectly fine.

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8 ?
WsReply xmlns:xsd=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema;
xmlns:xsi=http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance;
xmlns=http://XXX/;

typeArrayOfString/type
ArrayOfString
stringfeild1/string
stringfeild2/string
/ArrayOfString

/WsReply

The reply is equal to a class/Object with the name WsReply with two
public fields one called type which is of type string and the second
ArrayOfString which is an array of strings.

But when the reply is parsed by Flash (mx.services.WebService) it looses
the values inside the array even though the array is correctly populated
with two fields (And it is a real array).

When I do a for...in trace on the onResult object I get the following

ArrayOfString: undefined,undefined
type: ArrayOfString

Anyone know why this is happening? When I read the Webservice
documentation it seems like flash should support classes/Objects as a
webservice return type???

Thanks a lot in advance

Heres my very simple code for reference:)

I have a simulated cable in 3D, and all I have a 3D plug attached to

My 3D plug object stores its rotation as 3 euler angles.

I need to work out what those angles should be so that they point in

I guess this same calculation could be used to work out how to point
the camera at a particular object.

Re: [Flashcoders] Euler angles...

2006-09-01 Thread Mark Winterhalder

Hi,

it's been a while, but IIRC the cross product of the two normalized
vectors will give you the rotation vector, and the acos of the dot
product is the rotation angle. Convert that into a quaternion (much,
much easier than it sounds), that quaternion into a rotation matrix,
and extract the Euler angles from that one. I might be wrong, though.

In any case, have a look at these two FAQs:
http://www.j3d.org/matrix_faq/

They'll walk you through all the necessary steps and will answer
pretty much every question you might have regarding these issues.
Extremely helpful resource.

[Flashcoders] Locating redirected assets

2006-09-01 Thread Mendelsohn, Michael
Hi list...

My swf calls flv files on a server (not http), but the locations are all
redirects.  For instance,
http://ourwebprod/web/share/WebForm1.aspx?Media=video.flv actually would
point to \\someDrive\web\webAssets\video.flv, if that makes any sense.

Components in the swf make the call to load in flvs, if they could find
them. Is there any way in AS to get the result of a redirect, or does a
script have to sit on the webpage that would return the result of where
the actual location is?

it's been a while, but IIRC the cross product of the two normalized

and extract the Euler angles from that one. I might be wrong, though.

In any case, have a look at these two FAQs:

pretty much every question you might have regarding these issues.
Extremely helpful resource.

[Flashcoders] RE: Images stay on memory forever?

2006-09-01 Thread dave matthews

hi Dimitrios,

 Try using hard coded symbol_clips instead of the dynamically attached
movies, because frame 2+ is going to contain whatever exists on keyframe one
of the code created attached movie.

 For example, using an IDE target_clip symbol with the first occupied
keyframe and the target in frame 5 will require the command target_clip,
goto (key)frame5 and loadmovie content.jpg into
replacable_target_movieclip_symbol actually exists only on frame5. The
loaded content.jpg can be eliminated from the player by sending the
target_clip/timeline to empty keyframe1, which is a known to be an empty
keyframe... thus no 'load_target' no content that replaced the
'load_target.

 Placing attached movieclips on different levels is more complex since we
have no way to create truly empty keyframes on dynamic timelines... i
think... :)

Hi Dave,

Thank you for your reply!

I tried everything you described here. Unfortunately, I still got the same
problem.
I guess I'm not doing something right here...

This is my code now:

_root.attachMovie(p1, p1, 10);
_root.attachMovie(p2, p2, 20);

n = 1;

btn.onRelease = function():Void {
_root[p+n].gotoAndStop(2); // frame 2 is empty
_root[p+n].removeMovieClip();
n++;
}

I even tried removing the movie clip on the next frame, after calling
gotoAndStop(2).
Still the same.

Any thoughts?

hi Dimitrios,

re: Anyone got any idea?

 Because the .jpg's are still in the browser cache (but not in the
player), when the user zooms out and we move back to the empty target clips
in their timeline, reloading those .jpg's is instantaneous, as they are not
reoaded from the server.

You cannot delete a movieclip, just a reference to it.

e.g.
var mc = _root.ball;
delete mc;

the movieclip stays put and you just don't have an mc variable anymore.

[Flashcoders] Dynamically Loading JPGs ~ Strange Behavior

2006-09-01 Thread azsl1326-email
I have about 20 jpegs that are dynamically being loaded into a swf. These
images are loaded one at a time, fade in as the previous one fades out, and
then eventually the loop starts over again, loading the initial image. I am
using the MovieClipLoader Class to load them. I am, however, running into an
odd problem.

On the site's live server (Linux Box), the images don't always get loaded in to
the swf and there is just 'white' space. I have this exact site on another
hosting company's server (windows) and the issue never occurs. To resolve the
issue, I have even tried to use a cacheBuster for the images (ex:
image1.jpg?12345). This however still doesn't work. I have also tried using a
Windows server on the live site, but it yielded the same result. In my mind.
clearly this is an issue with the hosting company?. Does anyone have any
thioughts about why this may be occuring?

Thanks for any and all replies.

Re: [Flashcoders] Vob to FLV without Sound

2006-09-01 Thread Count Schemula

Vob files are multiplexed.

A lot of times I have to rip the audio out as a seperate file, rip the
VOB to an intermediate format like Quicktime Animation and then use a
video editor to export the video track and the audio track back out as
a single file and then go to final compression.

hi Dimitrios,

 Try using hard coded symbol_clips instead of the dynamically attached
movies, because frame 2+ is going to contain whatever exists on keyframe
one of the code created attached movie.

 Placing attached movieclips on different levels is more complex since we
have no way to create truly empty keyframes on dynamic timelines... i
think... :)

we'll get it working,

Re: [Flashcoders] Dynamically Loading JPGs ~ Strange Behavior

2006-09-01 Thread daniel
the reason it doesn't work live but does on local servers has to do with
loading time. Have your graphics load, then display them. Normaly what
I'll do is a simple load, and load all the pictures before anything
displays. I don't know of a way of watching the bits loaded of the
graphic so I will put in my own load time depending on how big the pics
are expected to be. Normaly is a single secound before I start loading
the next picture. Once all of them have been imported then I start the
display. Not all the pictures are loaded at this point, but the first
few are, and by the time it gets to the others they will be loaded to.
Control the graphics with AS. If you would like a sample of what mine
looks like, send me an email offlist and I'll be happy to forward you a
copy.

Re: [Flashcoders] ListBox component, get Data (2nd Value)?!

2006-09-01 Thread Arul Prasad M L

AFAIK, addItem takes only the label and ONE data element.

To save 2 data elements into the data part, you can make an array with both
the values, and add that array as the data.

Like this:

lista.addItem(categorias[n + 1], [categorias[n + 0], categorias[n + 3]])

Now, to access the second element, you can access it as

lista.sellectedItem.data[1]

~Arul Prasad.

Re: [Flashcoders] Dynamically Loading JPGs ~ Strange Behavior

2006-09-01 Thread Marc Hoffman
Of the solutions that have been suggested, I think the most likely
one is case-sensitivity. Make sure to maintain the same case in
naming and calling the files.

It doesn't seem that loading time is an issue. If you're using the
MovieClipLoader you're probably already using onLoadInit to display
the new image. You may want to create a new loader for each image so
that the current image isn't dumped before the new image is initialized.

The problem definitely isn't progressive JPGs, since it's working on
the Windows server.

We've done it using BitmapData... basically, onPress to start scrubbing,
we set the video object to invisible and capture the image of the object
using bitmap data.

On stop of scrub, reverse the process...

hopefully that helps... again, this is only as 2.0 at 8 at this point,
but figured i'd throw out my 2 cents.

Cliff, you are working for the wrong people. ;-) I've been there;
luckily the people I work for now do listen to my suggestions, and as
a respected developer, my opinions hold weight. My boss actually is
already playing around with SWHX to see if it does fit our next
product's needs. If you are selling directly to clients as a
freelancer or agency, it's the same thing, if they respect you, then
your opinion on the technology that they should choose will matter.

On another note, one advantage that SWHX has right now, is that it's
released. All we can do with Apollo at the moment is think about what
we could make with it. With that said, I'm with Edwin on this, I can't
wait to try out Apollo too.

Anyway, have a great weekend.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash cross-platform

2006-09-01 Thread John Dowdell

Audry Taylor wrote:
I figure the experts could help me on this one. When you create an
interactive Flash file, is it automatically compatible with different
platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux) so long as the user has installed Flash
or does it take extra scripting or something special to make it work
across platforms?
Also, what about working on a foreign machine? Can people in Japan or
China, for example, play Flash games made in English in the U.S.?

The answer generally is yes, here.

One way to think about it is that the Adobe Flash Player is a virtual
machine which works the same no matter what environment it's built
atop. WWW browsers do this for HTML, where you can see a document
regardless of which browser you use. WWW browsers may not be identical
when you get to advanced display or interactivity, but for basic
document work they abstract away the underlying platform differences.
The Adobe Flash Player offers a higher level of functionality in its
virtualization.

The biggest differences are in Player versioning. The Windows and
regular Macintosh versions for Flash Player 9 were finished first, and
once these were proven in the field the other ports began --
Macintosh/Intel Player entered distribution a month or two ago, Linux
Player is expect in public beta later this year with final delivery
early next year -- mobile devices will probably take awhile to get to
Flash 9 level. Generally, though, any device which plays a SWF6 file or
SWF7 file or whatever will play them the same.

Languages and cultures introduce different complexity. Many games are
international, with little emphasis on language or cultural referents.
If you've got a text-heavy presentation then support for multiple
languages, or others who cannot read English well, would become
important. But when you're delivering to a global audience you also have
to consider colors, gestures, the types of ways people spend their
time... there are lots of soft angles to consider for
internationalization. The Flash Player Virtual Machine doesn't get in
the way of that, though... it'll play content the same in Paris as it
would in Kyoto or Guilin.

Good...?

RE: [Flashcoders] ANN: Screenweaver HX - Version 1.0

2006-09-01 Thread Thomas Wester
Please note SWHX has full support for AS3 and AS2. It is using Neko/HaXe
as a platform to host it's functionality. There is no tight coupling
between the UI .swf and the HaXe backend that favours HaXe dev above
ActionScript dev. Your swf can be written using Flash 8/9/Flex 2.

The fact version 1.0 has full support for AS2/AS3 as well as HaXe
doesn't support the trend you suggest. In contrary, it is showing SWHX
is a open platform that is offering target developers choice.

I do understand that. Currently this is not a problem, but as AS3/FP9 move
forward on their own inevitable path, will SWHX play catchup or will it
concentrate on its own thing? I suspect the latter.

[Flashcoders] Updated Xray interface, connector and stand alone logging classes

2006-09-01 Thread John Grden

I just released the latest version of the connector (1.6.1) with a new
logger. The interface has been updated with log levels for runtime control
and works whether you use the connector or just the logger classes.

Thanks to Chris Allen for a ton of help in flushing the new Logger out.
I've included his MtascUtility.as to work with Mtasc users wanting to
redirect using -trace

Traces with MtascUtitility look like this now:
(273) com.blitzagency.Main::run : line 42
what's my obj?!
John: [Object]
   phone: ring

I've also implemented Keith Peter's Debug class and replaced the original
XrayTrace with it. I've added basic property information about a movieclip
being passed through in a trace/log:

(276) my movieclip
_level0.mc :: (visible=true, x=119.95, y=95, alpha=100, width=57, height=57)

Usage with connector and logger classes here - it pretty well explains it
all:
http://www.osflash.org/xray#usage_9.1.2006

The connector only package includes 2 main files that demonstrate the 2
possible scenarios of using just the Logger classes (with/without mtasc) or
with loading the connector etc.

It's late, I'm tired, hope I covered the vitals ;)

Let me know what you think,

Re: [Flashcoders] ANN: Screenweaver HX - Version 1.0

2006-09-01 Thread Chris Allen

I totally agree Thomas. I don't think that it is limited in the way
that Cliff is describing. In fact they explicitly say it's not. Nor
will it move away from AS3 as it's targeting the same virtual machine
in the Flash player. Cliff seems to have already made up his mind on
the subject of what his clients want, so more than likely his clients
will have to wait for Apollo.

I think the real advantage of this new thing that Nicolas and Edwin
have created is that it can be so flexible. You can write the UI using
Flex Builder 2, AS3 and MXML and then compile that to a SWF, wrap it
in Screenweaver and use haXe via Neko to access a database or the file
system on a user's computer. Yes Apollo will allow us to do this too
in its own way (maybe not database access as someone pointed out), and
adds PDF and HTML support, but you won't be able to write it all in
one language if you choose, nor will you be able to extend it how you
see fit.
