SV: [Flashcoders] Input field bug in firefox when embedding swfwithWMODE as transparent og opaque

2007-06-19 Thread Martin Baltzer Hennelund

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I have looked at mozilla.org but didn't find much.

It's really not that fancy - just Windows XP and Firefox (v 2.0.0.4) and since
Firefox represents more than 33% of the users these days its a browser i'm
afraid we can't just ignore.

(http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp )

Unfortunately it was an issue I didn't see coming upfront and since we agreed
with our client to suppport Firefox we need to find a way around this.

Thanks again.

Cheers
Martin

Re: Some version of Firefox apparently stops ALT-key characters entered in SWF
textfields when WMODE is used.

That might be true. First step would be the Firefox documentation -- check OS
browser version against known issues, and either ask your audience to upgrade
or just stopping trying to be so fancy in the frail and varied browsers.

It's also possible that this particular content triggers an odd failure in a
particular browser brand/OS/version combo -- making a very simple HTML file, as
well as a barebones SWF, and testing it on different machines with different
keyboards would be the fastest way to detect this.

thanks, it almost works here. I still have a problem though -
the movieclips and graphics, that I pull out of library and put

put a gotoAndStop(3) in the actions of the 1st frame.

I don't understand why does it happen.

Why are my assets displayed, isn't flash player supposed
to skip the frame 2, when I call gotoAndStop(3) ?

If it's offline content accessing offline files, you should have no
problems. The security restrictions only apply to online content.

there

System.security.allowDomain() has nothing to do with that, it serves a

Subject: [Flashcoders] Confused by preloading sounds and components

 Hi,

 I've set up this kind of preloader:

 Frame 1: Preloader (when loaded, gotoAndStop frame 30)
 Frame 10: Classes export (set in File-Publish Settings-AS2-Settings)
 Frame 20: Components/MovieClips placed on stage to force export
 Frame 30: The movie (calls attachMovie, createClassObject, attachSound)

 However I'm confused by 2 things (searched a lot for them):

 1) Why are the Components and MovieClips placed in frame 20
displayed for a second despite the gotoAndStop(30) in frame 1?
Isn't frame 20 supposed to be jumped over by that command?

Currently I have to create a MovieClip, then pull all stuff
from the library into it and make it invisible...

 2) My second annoyance is that the sounds, that I put into
that component at the stage in frame 20, are played.
How could I stop them from playing, but still preload them?

I've noticed, that this JSFL tool -
http://www.gskinner.com/blog/archives/2004/08/internal_preloa.html
is doing smth. special for sounds, but I don't understand what exactly...

my project, because the latter is big and I'm changing it daily.

IMHO flash player makes a stupid thing with its cache:

It should send an If-Modified-Since request to the web
server and serve the .swf file only if the web server has
replied with a 304 Not Modified.

But instead the flash player just always sends the
.swf file if it has found it in the cache, without the check...

It's not Flash's cache but the browser's. I don't think Adobe have any
direct control over how the browser requests files (I may be wrong, I don't
know a lot about what's going on behind the scenes). In any case, you can
always force a preload by appending a dummy variable to the server string,
if you need to, although I'm not quite clear from your comment what you want
- preloading and cacheing are pretty much independent things.

Once you do things like attachMovie, frames and the timeline become pretty
much irrelevant. If you don't want them to be seen, place them offscreen
somewhere.

 How could I stop them from playing, but still preload them?

I'd do it by loading them with some other command, like loadVariables. It
should cause them to be downloaded without having to put them on stage
(haven't tried it, but it should work)

public class Button extends SimpleButton

public function button(){
this._label;

but it seems an error in the code like like I have no return value
for the function button (I'm clueless)

and this is the loop in my main as application.

public function buttons():void{
for (var i:uint=0; imyArray.length; i++){

[Flashcoders] AS2.0 Class Question

2007-06-19 Thread azsl1326-email
Hello All ---

I have what is probably a simple question, but possibly difficult to spell out
in email.

I have a SFW(A) which is loading Class A I have another SWF(B) which is
loading Class B. Both FLAs exist in seperate directories and utilize
their own classes. At some point SWF(A) gets loaded into SWF(B) and
Class A makes a call to Class B. Everything runs according to plan.

However the problem I run into is that when I publish SWF(A) with Class
A attempting to call Class B, I get an error in the output panel that
states more or less that Class B doesn't exist. Again, if I just ignore
the error, everything runs fine. I don't really want to drop Class A
into the folder where Class B is as there are about 15 other class
files and SWF(A)/Class A doesn't really need them to run. Is there a
way to avoid this issue?

Hope that somewhat makes sense. Thanks for any and all replies.

Re: [Flashcoders] Estimating the time required for a project

2007-06-19 Thread James Deakin

Thanks for taking the time to respond Hans. I actually record how long
things take already. I think you are right though perhaps the hard part is
having the arguments to hand to support why it will take a while.

Which books would you recommend?

Where I work there is another employee who is willing to hack things
together any old way. I like to do things properly and plan for the cases
where the application might fail and try to deal with those gracefully. But
whenever I give estimates the project manager says well the other guy can
do it in 5 days. its driving me nuts.

Thanks once again for the advice.

On 6/16/07, Hans Wichman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi,

well one advice is to start recording your current measures and check
afterwards how close you were.
Record things you forget that made your estimates go wrong, records the
factor realhours vs estimate.
Assume that when you think you know everything, you only know about 40% of
whats going to happen.
Adjust your estimate as you go along. Put your estimate on paper, and
include your assumptions.
If the assumptions change, check if you estimates need to be adjusted too.

Read up on software management lifecycle or books that describe software
processes such as code complete or mythical manmonth, to understand WHY
estimating a software project is hard, and how you can make your manager
understand.

It's pretty easy to become better at estimating theoretically, say you
have
a project and its estimate is 10 hours. Now it turns out to be 40 hours.
Next time you estimate 20 hours, and you go 'hey but wait, i was wrong by
400% last time', so you say 80. The hard part of doing it this way is not
having rock solid arguments to present to your boss.

Other things that come with understanding the software process is the
difference between the time it takes to hack something together, or create
a
software product, or a software system of combined working products. A
proof
of concept for a memory game might take 45 minutes, but a full flegded off

To conclude my best advice is probably to:
* start measuring, and try to understand why your estimate was wrong (or
right)
* read up on software development material

I have a SFW(A) which is loading Class A I have another SWF(B) which is

their own classes.

Is there a

Hope that somewhat makes sense. Thanks for any and all replies.

[Flashcoders] Flash https / IE wierdness

2007-06-19 Thread Giles Roadnight

Hi All

I have a swf that loads an rss feed then loads images and displays them.

This works fine on our local dev server, the live server and on the staging
server on Firefox. However on the staging server the images do not appear
and none of the text in the rss appear either.

The only difference is that the staging server is running on https (it comes
up with an invalid certificate when you load the site).

It's very odd that it works in firefox and not in IE.

Does IE handle https urls any different than Firefox?

Thanks

Hope someone can help.

[Flashcoders] asfunction and single param

Hi everyone,

I'm generating a hyperlink within a textarea component. I'd like to
do a getURL by generating HTML that includes the hyperlink, opening
up the page in a new window. So far, I have managed to generate the
link and open up the page, but not in a new window. It would be great
to use an asfunction call to a method that uses getURL with a
_blank parameter, but it doesn't seem to be working for me.

Any help is appreciated. If there's a better way to do this, do let

	var webURL:String = Website: font color='#ff'ua
href='asfunction:openInBrowser,http://; + tURL + ';

theOutput += webURL;

break;
} // Another switch statement closes the font and hyperlink tags

/**
* Here's my altered code... Since I can only pass in one parameter,
I'm defining a function to open the link in a new window, but it
doesn't work

TARGET=_blank

or maybe this:

A HREF=asfunction:myFunction,myParam TARGET=_blank

If you want to use getURL afterall, then this should work:

A HREF=asfunction:openInBrowser,myURLMy Text/A

function openInBrowser(url)

But I don't see why the latter option would be necessary.

[Flashcoders] Strange NetStream behavior with FMS

2007-06-19 Thread rgb
Greetings all!

So I've created a custom video interface (based on the one Lee Brimelow
created in his Lynda.com tutorials ) that hinges on the NetStream.onStatus
events. It uses the Play.Start and Play.Stop to create an onEnterFrame
that updates the progress bar/seek functions/timecode/etc.

My problem is that when I connect it to a FVSS/Media Server, the
'NetStream.Play.Stop' and 'NetStream.Buffer.Flush' events are called about
75-80% of the way through the video - yet the video continues to play
perfectly until the end of it. This causes some crazyness with my control
interface in relation to controling the video.

So far i've tried it on a 3rd party streaming service, and the dev version
of Media Server 2. Same error both places. I've tried many different video
files, and many different encoders (Flash Video encoder, visualHub, riva,
AE, etc).

Here's an example of the error I'm getting (pay attention to when
'Play.Stop' and 'Buffer.Flush' are called):
http://temp.fhdbeta.com/Adobe/basicVideo2.html

This is all the code I'm using in that file:

///

var serverName:String = my server;
var appName:String = my path;

var client_nc:NetConnection = new NetConnection();
client_nc.connect(rtmp:// + serverName + / + appName);
var ns:NetStream = new NetStream(client_nc);

ns.onStatus = function(info:Object) {
trace(info.code);
display_txt.text += info.code + \n;
}

testVideo.attachVideo(ns);
ns.setBufferTime(.5);
ns.play(whatever);

If anyone can tell me why those two events are being fired 75-80% of the
video when it has clearly not Stopped Playing or give me any workarounds
for dealing with this, I'll be eternally grateful.

Any information on this would be great - I've scoured all the
searches/forums for any info on this, even Adobe Tech Support was stumped.

Many many thanks for your time!
-will-

Re: [Flashcoders] asfunction and single param

try escaping the url being passed as the param. Having two protocols
(asfunction: and http:) is probably the cause of your problem. You'll want
to unescape it from within the function as well. I think using the target
attribute as Jason mentioned is a better solution.

Re: [Flashcoders] asfunction and single param

Here is a trace from using the first strategy:
==
Website: font color='#ff'ua href='asfunction:getURL,http://
www. google.com' TARGET='_blank'www. google.com/a/u/font

==
The url still opens up in the same window as the Flash file, not a
new window.

The second strategy still doesn't work for me. It doesn't seem to be
finding the function. Here's the trace:

===
Website: font color='#ff'ua
href='asfunction:openInBrowser,http://www.google.com'www.google.com/
a/u/font

===
I've tried to remove the param and see if it can fire 'openInBrowser'
with a simple trace, but it doesn't fire.

Thanks for the feedback so far. Let me know if there are any other
thoughts on this.

You're not following my first option right. My first option doesn't use

Re: [Flashcoders] asfunction and single param

2007-06-19 Thread elibol

I think now that it's a scoping issue. Make sure the function is defined in
the same class/movieclip as the textfield which contains the asfunction. You
then just have to delegate it to where you need it.

[Flashcoders] AS3 root

2007-06-19 Thread Patrick Matte|BLITZ
Hi fellas, I have a swf that's loaded inside another one. The container swf
calls the transitionIn function in the loaded swf. In AS2, I used to put this
in the loaded swf:

if(this == _root){
transitionIn();
}

That way I could test my swf in the flash IDE independently from the parent
swf. If the swf was loaded in the container, this wouldn't be eqal to _root and
the transitionIn would not be called.

I'm trying to do the same thing in AS3. Every displayObject container has a
root property but, it stops at the swf level. So root of the loaded swf is
equal to the actual swf, not the container. So how can I know if the swf is
tested by itself in the IDE or it is loaded by the container?

Re: [Flashcoders] Estimating the time required for a project

2007-06-19 Thread Hans Wichman

Hi,

i think i'd recommend 'code complete', 'the mythical manmonth', 'software
project survival guide', but that's just based on personal preference,
picking up some books about agile development methodologies could be a good
idea too. To be honest, I know the ideas in there, and read papers about it,
but havent got to reading a lot of book on agile methods perse.

The thing you describe with the employee sounds familiar, but I think there
are two separate issues:
* wrong estimates (the subject of your first email)
* different programming approaches (the subject of the last email)

An employee who hacks everything together might give off very accurate
estimates:), the main thing probably is trying to tell your manager WHY that
is not the way to go. If you are a perfectionist you might wanna plan for
all those one in a million cases that happen 9 times out of 10, but if your
boss asked you to develop a quick prototype, you are indeed wasting a lot of
time with that formal approach (not saying you are, but just if).
The reason we still do it that way is probably that we know 99,% sure
that the quick prototype will end up in production before you blink your
eyes, and one way or another you've been manouvered in such a position that
your biting dust either way.
However, i tend to keep all communication and assumptions on email, if
someone wants a quick prototype, i give them a quick prototype, ok here is
the quick prototype you asked for. Note it has been hacked together, meaning
it will probably crash, its unmaintainable, has to be rewritten from scratch
if etc etc etc.. You might go on to tell them the nitty gritty details,
tell them to read a book on software project management, or tell m to just
trust you, depending on the kind of work relationship/environment you are
in.
(note that i am leaving out the option that you have a solid simple
framework, allowing you to put together prototypes more quickly with less
disadvantages such as the ones described above).

The books mentioned will give you a lot of information on how to educate
your boss why it takes you a factor 5 or 10 or 20 compared to your collegue,
if he wants a maintainable production ready system. If your boss still
doesnt wanna listen, find another boss, more and more managers are seeing
the light of solid software development these days :). I had the kind of
collegue you mentioned and he was fired because he just couldnt get his
stuff bugfree.
And for yourself you need to decide what kind of project you are working on,
and what kind of measures and overhead it demands. After all a nuclear power
system control unit will require different methods than a bouncing flash
animation.

The estimate for the project I am currently working on, was originally a
year. We had to do it in 3 months. So we said ok, we'll do it in 3, BUT
documentation will be lacking, functionality will be lacking, it wont be as
adaptable, etc, etc, but what we do create will be okay and bugfree. However
if you ever want to incorporate more changes, we will have to refactor as we
go along (which we are currently doing). Of course it didn't go quite as
smoothly as it sounds, but in the end we are getting there.

Sorry for the chaotic piece of text, but to conclude:
* go with the flow, but communicate about your assumptions so they dont
backfire
* i try to keep a 'we see possibilities' attitude with a note of warning,
instead of a 'we see only problems' attitude
* read up on books and try to educate your managers, and dont worry some
managers wont understand what you are trying to explain no matter how good
you do it:)
* if you have established that you are on the right track (based on what you
read) and are still not valued and cant change it within your current
organisation, leave. Shame to let good talent rot to waste:)

just my 2 cnts and really the books explain these phenomena we all encounter
way better than i just tried

I saw this coming... Once Adobe take over Macromedia, things would start

Bad things, I mean.

How come Flash CS3 Installer is over 400 MB, when Flash 8 was only 110 MB??
While I'm writing this the application in being installed (less than 50%
progress).

How is it possible that it's taking AGES to do finish!
It almost seems like I was installing... I don't know Photoshop, or some
other buggy Adobe software. Oh! s**t I am!

I'm scared! I hope they don't screw it with the Flash Player. That'd be
quite harmful for us. I think.
I don't see people updating Flash Player if it's 30MB or annoying in
some other way.

Perhaps you guys had this discussion some time ago.
Do you have any URLs I can read about this, so I can find out if it is

Re: [Flashcoders] AS3 root

2007-06-19 Thread Muzak
Another way would be to check if there's a parentDomain (using loaderInfo).
It's a bit more complicated though (well, just more code)..

import flash.system.ApplicationDomain;
import flash.display.LoaderInfo;
import flash.events.Event;

function initHandler(e:Event):void {
 trace(Application ::: initHandler);
 trace((e.currentTarget as LoaderInfo).applicationDomain.parentDomain);
}
this.loaderInfo.addEventListener(flash.events.Event.INIT, initHandler);

When not loaded into another swf will return null, otherwise returns an
ApplicationDomain instance

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash CS3 over 400 MB! and 25 minutes to install!

The install size has indeed increased.
That's because you're no longer just installing Flash but a whole bunch of
(use your imagination) that is needed for
integrating with other Adobe products.
And yes, it takes forever to install (at least it did here).

I had to uninstall a CS3 suite from my laptop which took hours (seriously).

They need to look into this if you ask me.

I saw this coming... Once Adobe take over Macromedia, things would start to
happen.

That'd be quite
 harmful for us. I think.
 I don't see people updating Flash Player if it's 30MB or annoying in some
 other way.

 Perhaps you guys had this discussion some time ago.
 Do you have any URLs I can read about this, so I can find out if it is just
 me paranoid?

 Thanks,

[Flashcoders] Asynchronous ExternalInterface Calls From Javascript, possible?

2007-06-19 Thread Seth Green
I have a web app that uses a flash movie as a proxy to a web service.
Therefore, I have javascript calling flash methods that in turn make
requests to a web service and then route the response back to javascript.

I don't need my javascript functions to wait on this calls, but
ExternalInterface is inherently synchronous. And to my surprise I have
found that a flash method which does nothing but make a web service
request can take 100ms or more. This is unacceptably slow, but
especially so since my javascript code has to hang while the flash
method does its business.

Does anyone have any experience with this issue, or can provide a
workaround or hint as to how I might make these calls asynchronous?

thanks in advance.

Ok, folks this is the code.

public function buttons():void{

var myButtons:Button = new Button();
addChild(myButtons);
myButtons.x=100+i;
myButtons.y=0;
trace(myArray);
myArray.push(myButtons+i);

the array is upper in a private var. that looks like this:

public var myArray:Array = new Array(who we are, what we do,

[Flashcoders] how to get CDATA into an XML object

My goal is to store away the htmlText of TextField inside of an xml object.

trace(htmlOfTextField);
/*
output:

// now, I want to build a node html containing an exact copy of
htmlOfTextField
var xmlRecord = new XML(html![CDATA[ + htmlOfTextField  +

trace(xmlRecord.toString());
/*
output:

SIZE=quot;12quot; COLOR=quot;#00quot;gt;lt;Bgt;Formatted
content of a text
field.lt;/Bgt;lt;/FONTgt;lt;/Pgt;lt;/TEXTFORMATgt;/html

Notice that the output above does not contain the mark-up ![CDATA[

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash CS3 over 400 MB! and 25 minutes to install!

2007-06-19 Thread JulianG

John, thanks for your reply.

Here's a tip. Provide installation options so users can choose which
components to install.

I believe some developers don't care about PSD import or other designer
tools. I don't.
I usually work with someone else's artwork which is delivered to me in a
FLA file.

My work is usually a couple of hundred KB (mostly scripts). So it
doesn't really make sense to me that the installation requires 1.2 GB of
disk space.
I usually copy artwork from one FLA to another, arrange things in
different MovieClips, I link them to classes and then I use
FlashDevelop to write my scripts. So I figure out many people like me
don't really need a gigantic IDE. Just the basics.

Thanks again for explaining.

cheers,
JulianG

AS2 will not support CDATA nodes. You should load in a schema that has a
CDATA node first, then use that schema to write your text nodes to the CDATA
node and pass the instance of the schema w/ the CDATA intact. I've had to
use this work-around for another project I worked on a year ago.

In theory, the following is creating an xml object with a CDATA node,
but it doesn't appear to work:

var xmlRecord = new XML(html![CDATA[ + some arbitrary string +

var child = xmlRecord.firstChild;
trace(nodeType :+child.nodeType);
trace(nodeName :+child.nodeName);
trace(nodeValue :+child.nodeValue);

nodeValue :null

Where to start...

First a few obvious things, but general.

Flash 9 Beta?? I thought that timed out already. Besides it is a beta and

Copy and pasting code from Flash 9 to Flex is not a 1:1 conversion.

Lastly, you code actually worked. Looking at your FOR loop, I don't think it
would ever end. Your condition to end the loop is the length of the myArray.
But within the loop you are pushing more items into it. I would think that
causes an endless loop.

Next you show use that you have already set myArray with some items. I am
just a bit confused. Are you prebuilding the array or are you dynamically
building it? It would seem you are trying to do both.

Perhaps letting us know what error you are getting in Flex or what exactly
is going wrong other than they are just not appearing. Is you myArray
getting messed up? Are the Button objects not getting generated?

Hi, I'm trying to create buttons using an array, it looks good in
Flash 9 beta but in flex, it seems trouble for me.

this is the code of the loop, the debugger doesn't show me any error
or warning but I don't see my buttons
by the way I have a loader also with a big jpg as a background , this
one would probably be the cause of my problem?.

Ok, folks this is the code.

public function buttons():void{
for (var i:uint=0; imyArray.length; i++){
var myButtons:Button = new
Button();
addChild(myButtons);
myButtons.x=100+i;
myButtons.y=0;
trace(myArray);
myArray.push(myButtons+i);
}

the array is upper in a private var. that looks like this:

public var myArray:Array = new Array(who we are, what we do,
contact, products);

P.d: sooner I'm gonna buy those flex books.

Re: [Flashcoders] how to get CDATA into an XML object

2007-06-19 Thread Charles Parcell

I believe the entire thing has to be inside the CDATA.

var xmlRecord = new XML(![CDATA[html + some arbitrary string +
/html]]);

In theory, the following is creating an xml object with a CDATA node,
but it doesn't appear to work:

var xmlRecord = new XML(html![CDATA[ + some arbitrary string +
]]/html);
var child = xmlRecord.firstChild;
trace(nodeType :+child.nodeType);
trace(nodeName :+child.nodeName);
trace(nodeValue :+child.nodeValue);

/*
ouput:
nodeType :1
nodeName :html
nodeValue :null
*/

AS2 will not support CDATA nodes. You should load in a schema that has a
CDATA node first, then use that schema to write your text nodes to the
CDATA
node and pass the instance of the schema w/ the CDATA intact. I've had to
use this work-around for another project I worked on a year ago.
