Re: [Flashcoders] best way to save as pdf from flash?

2009-05-13 Thread Glen Pike

Hi,

   I am assuming you are talking about the IDE?

   Are you doing screenshots for the client?

   It might not be helpful, but I just do Test Movie then Alt+Print
Screen or Ctrl+Print Screen and paste into my graphics program...

   Alternatively look at CutePDF or one of the free PDF printers that
might help.

   Printing from SWF's with the FP Printer - you can draw into a bitmap
first, then print the MC with that in - this means all your filters
fonts should have been rasterised.

   HTH - might have misunderstood your request...

use is required.

Thus, because flash doesn't have a decent printer driver, and its file
conversion methods suck, my current process is:

I create an swf of the dimensions I want in inches (e.g. 8.5 x 11)
I convert to png and choose a DPI of something like 300 to indicate
high resolution, and I select 24 bit, with no alpha channel, in order
to avoid the ARGB conversion that is screwed for flash.
I open that png and I open something like photoshop/illustrator that
allows you to convert to a pdf.

Is there a better way?

Re: [Flashcoders] best way to save as pdf from flash?

2009-05-13 Thread Karl DeSaulniers

You can print what you have inside a MovieClip if you want.
just put a label on the first frame of the MC that holds all the
things you want printed and put a #p
then place a #b on a frame in the MC that holds the other MC that
has the #p and the print button.

Then on the button use this script to trigger:

on (press) {
printAsBitmap((MC that everything is loaded in), bmax);
}

There are other options to this that you can google, this worked for
me, but I use bmax to get the max area of what I'm printing.
I just haven't figured out how to get it to ignore a mask if there is
one over the image. Oh and I'm programing in AS2. Don't know if that
would matter with this code.
It does not print a PDF but once your in the dialog box you should
have a save as PDF button
(I think you have this PDF button on PCs but not sure, I'm on a MAC
and we have one)
Then you can make a PDF from the bitmapData. or if you have a create-
a-PDF class,

you could format the bitmapData into that.
Just a thought. :)

[Flashcoders] Text field doesn't show hand cursor over links.

2009-05-13 Thread natalia Vikhtinskaya
Hi to all
This is AS2. I have two different results with text area and embedded font..
If I apply this style.css to dynamic text area
p {
font-family: Arial; // I have font Arial in the library with id “Arial”.
font-size: 13px;
color: #66;
}
a:link {
font-size: 13px;
color: #ff;
}
a:hover {
font-size: 13px;
color: #ff;
text-decoration: underline;
}
I have hand cursor over links.

If I create text like this:
this.createTextField(textContent, 0, 0, 25, 250, 200);
var obj=this.textContent;
obj.multiline = true;
obj.wordWrap = true;
obj.embedFonts = true;
obj.content.html=true;
obj.autoSize = true;
obj.selectable = false;
obj.styleSheet = flash_css;
obj.htmlText=curText;

I have underlined links but don’t have hand cursor. What is wrong in this code?

Another problem if I have bold tags bsome text/b that text is not
visible for text created with createTextField. How can I embed all
type of font-wights to my font in the library with id “Arial”? I
looked at a lot of examples but can not find answer.

Thank you for any help.

You have to embed 2 times the same font in your library, I think you can
use just the same id, but you should import one as bold and another as a

Hello :)

A gif asset is not a Shape class but a Bitmap ?

try the flash.utils.describeType method to see the real inherited class :

trace( describeType( newImage ) ) ;

If you write as Shape the new filter object is null ... use other display
class (Bitmap) to cast your variable.

EKA+ :)

[Flashcoders] Taschen Icons - Web Design: Flashfolios

2009-05-13 Thread Paul Andrews
I have the Taschen Icons - Web Design: Flashfolios book. very nice it is
too.

For those of us on the list that have this book (there must be a few), I'm
curious about the cost estimates that are sometimes given.

It can be a bit difficullt to estimate the complexity of a given site -
particularly if the design has changed since the book was published, but in
several cases I've considered the costing given to some sites as being way
too low - p74 www.dita-legends.com has a cost estimate of 50 hours! (note it
looks like the design and url has changed since the book was published).
http://www.sergedemarre.be/ (p158) has a cost of 80 hours.

Anyway, I won't go on - there are many sites with a cost of 120 hours or so
and naturally several with very long times.

I suspect that some of these estimates are plucked from the air and if I
take 80 hours, that would imply two man-weeks.

My experience (particularly with corporates) is that huge amounts of time
can be taken up with meetings and reworking of graphics and themes and
several people can be involved - designer, developer, account manager, ..etc
. Even in a small agency you might expect that 80 hours to be split between
design and development, so 80 hours seems really tight to me and even 120
hours seems unlikely for a sophisticated client with a lot of assets to be
designed and approved.

I once worked on a corporate project (not flash) where 120 hours wouldn't
have been enough for the meetings about the proposed development, let alone
making it!

If you have the book, please let me know what you think of those costings!

Re: [Flashcoders] best way to save as pdf from flash?

2009-05-13 Thread Anthony Pace
I was referring to the ide; yet, even the flashplayer has the the same
printing bugs

-screenshots are out of the question; as I usually am printing very
large files
-I have already tried printing directly to a PDF print server, from the
flash IDE; however, the effects I place on MCs don't seem to stay.
-I would use illustrator; yet, it just doesn't have a lot of flash's
capabilities, and vise versa when doing extrusions for illustration or
using livepaint. I know I can export the paths to illustrator; yet, the
effects don't transfer well, if at all, and I am not a fan of the poor
quality of some of the illustrator effects.
-I know that I could convert the movie clip to a bitmap in as3 and then
either convert it to a pdf or png/jpg using a decent library, or
printing it as a converted bitmap to a pdf server(as long as the pixel
count is less than 16,775,168, a problem when converting to posters that
need a bare minimum quality of 300 dpi at 27 x 41 or 99,630,000
pixels), and it will be the direction I am going in; however, I really

Yes, but it can easily be viewed as it's coming across the wire using

This won't solve the issue, ssl certs do encrypt data, but they are
not meant to encrypt the data so that it is unreadable to the end
user... they are meant so that if I am conducting a transaction
online, it encrypts all the data so that Bob over in Arkansas can't
jack the posted fom data.

So, if I am looking at the net stream, through a common tool like
FireBug, I will definitely be able to see all the data going to and

Re: [Flashcoders] is imported db text safe from decompilers?

2009-05-13 Thread Anthony Pace
If you are worried about the client accessing your data outside of the
player, that you just have to live with it; for, if someone is good
enough they will find a way.

For example:

-If you are using the browser's ssl capability, I would just create a
proxy for the browser(thanks for the slap on the head Dave).

if you encrypt it directly from the flash player that is a little safer;
yet:

-If you generate the swf and the keys are in the swf when downloaded,
the swf can be decompiled and the keys easily found.
-If you are generating the keys on the fly in the swf, you have to worry
about a person that can spy on variables in memory.

There is a way where you encrypt variables in memory; yet, there is
still that instance where the data is in open text before being
translated and then encrypted.

Security in flash doesn't really exist; however, you can put so many
hurdles that would take a hacker forever, and forcing them to lose
interest; yet, persistence and resistance are tied hand to hand so that
thinking could backfire.

The only real security exists for languages on machines that randomly
generate keys at the hardware level and the code that runs on them is
deciphered at runtime; yet, you would also need several incorruptible
and extremely heavily armed guards making sure that a hardware engineer
doesn't get within 10 miles of it; however, cut off their food/air
supply and you have access to the machines.

If you are at an end point you have access to the data.

Waiting for Dave to rip into my post,
Anthony

Hi Paul,

No one else uses Xara, and it lacks a lot of photo editing and brush
customization features; however, it does look neat for vectors.

Xara is Vector programme with a bit of photoediting. Your comment is a bit
like criticising Flash for not being as good as photoshop for playing with
pixels. Xara is way ahead of flash in terms of vector illustration. As for
nobody else using Xara, well the Xara community know it's a well kept
secret. They keep churning out great artwork and use it in preference to
illustrator. Anyway..

The situation is, the flash IDE doesn't work the way I would like, so I
have decided to make my own little application that outputs to pdf.

I think you're trying to say that the IDE should export to PDF. Is that
right? At first I thought you were talking about flash at runtime, not the
IDE. I use flash for motion work and really a PDF export would be pointless
since most of my motion work doesn't use the timeline.

Anyway, I've finally twigged what you're up to. Have fun.

Paul

 I might also make an extension, as that would be useful to more people
than just me; yet, I would need to put aside a little time to mess around.

Thanks,
Anthony

Hi,

   It's more about risk assessment and minimising it than how to keep
it safe. If your data is so sensitive that joe public should not see it
then allowing access to the data over the internet is probably a bad
thing to do...

   Otherwise, if it's not hugely sensitive, perhaps personal
information or commercial information that you need to restrict from
just anyone using, you can try to reduce the risk of the data falling
into the wrong hands by restricting access to it - e.g. password protect
the data. Then your weakest link is the people themselves (assuming
your code does not have bugs). If you just have a system that does not
let the people accessing it change the text data or their account
details, then that can be made safe reasonably easily - simplest way is
basic HTTP Authentication using htaccess / htpasswd on Apache to
restrict access to the url's with Flash, etc. on.

   Once you start allowing people to change things like content and
passwords, etc., then it becomes more risky - more possibility of bugs /
exploits cropping up.

   So, you need to weigh up how bad it is if your text gets out (cost /
reputation / business wise) vs how strong you need to make your security
(money / time programming it in). Someone will always find a way to
break in, if you can keep that to an acceptable minimum, you are on a
winner.

  AMFPHP did support some sort of authentication system out of the
box, but I don't know much about this - check out the doc's...

Good points have been raised. Thank you for quick your feedback!

Does anyone have recommendations for keeping text data as safe as possible? Is
there a different track I should be taking? (I am open to leaving the Flash
environment as well)

Re: [Flashcoders] is imported db text safe from decompilers?

2009-05-13 Thread Steven Sacks

Encrypt your text using a super crazy encryption algorithm.

Then, create a swc that contains the key and algorithm to decrypt the
text.

Then, encrypt that swc using another super crazy encryption algorithm.

Load the swc at runtime as raw bytes, decrypt it in memory, and then
instantiate it as the class you need.

Decrypt the text.

Null out the swf instance and the bytes.

Force the gc to run.

That's about as protected as you can get. Obviously, you'll need a
pretty strong challenge response system in place to get the shared key
to decrypt the swc in memory.

Don't know how to do this?
