For some reason I thought I heard there was a newer project he was

Cool, I guess I should have assumed that there would be some powerful
text editors available. I just thought I saw NotePad or something,
which can't do stuff like that.

From: http://www.textpad.com/products/textpad/features.html

A powerful search/replace engine using UNIX-style regular
expressions, with the power of editor macros. Sets of files in a
directory tree can be searched, and text can be replaced in all open
documents at once.

On 5/28/07, David Ngo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I understand that, but if his specific requirement is to go through .as
files, then something like TextPad should be able to do exactly what he
needs. You can search for and replace all instances of a specific string
within folders, subfolders, specifically selected files, etc. You can even
add the .as filetype within TextPad and associate it directly to TextPad or
have it open up the default program. I mean, did you guys even look up
TextPad's capabilities before shooting down my suggestion? ActionScript
files are nothing more than text files. There's no special encoding type to
show that they are 'ActionScript' files, aside from the fact that the
compiler is hard-coded to look for the specific .as extension.

[Flashcoders] Motion to combine coders and newbies.

2007-05-13 Thread Count Schemula

Hear me out before freaking out.

1. Half of the posts in Coders are more or less Newbie posts anyhow.

2. There is just not a lot of traffic in Newbies. So, it's hard to
pick Coders brains and honestly, most Newbie questions can be answered
by a Coder in less than a minute. I post in Newbies, but answers can
take days. Seems like Jason Merrill is one of the few Coders dedicated
to helping out those less fortunate.

3. Making Newbies stronger benefits all. After a while, a typical
dedicated Newbie will be able to field a lot of the other Newbie
questions and the situation will level out.

4. But oh, the increased traffic! Please. I have a dedicated gmail
account for this list. It threads the posts together and has
practically unlimited storage and very good search.

5. Pound home the idea that Newbies need to title their posts as such
No0b: How do I make a movie clip? Coders don't have to do anything.

6. What's good for Flash developers is good for the Flash Platform.
Getting more Newbies to an intermediate level benefits the Flash
Platform as a whole with better apps, better people in jobs to lobby
for Flash, etc, etc.

Ok, now you can freak out.

You may want to buy the boxed version.

I only mention it because with MM and their site I got into the habit of
purchasing the download version and later on, checking the also send a cd
checkbox for reinstalls. But the Adobe site,

a) doesn't have this option, which you don't find out until the end of the
process because the MM option was at the end of the process.

b) the cs3 web premium version is 2+gigabytes and is 1 monolithic rather
than seperate downloads - so download errors are still possible even in
todays broadband world and backup will require dvdr rather than cdr

c) I can't remember c, but think there may have been one.

I would also like to add, as long as I'm already spamming folk with OT that
1) The price for CS3 for studio 8 owners is way more reasonable than I
expected and has engendered some good emotions on my part towards adobe,
(especially since Corel has completed it's ruination of both Painter and
PSP)
2) I'm amazed how similar photoshop cs3 seems to whatever version I had
last which was, like, 1997.
3) Fireworks CS3 Is really nice. Glad they kept it and did something with
it.
4) We really need to create some open source liquid layout components for
Flash 9.

Do well,

Sorry for the OT

Out.

 Right now I delete the onEnterFrame when an onRollOver event occurs,

 Is there a way to pause, and resume an onEnterFrame?

[Flashcoders] pause an onEnterFrame?

2007-05-07 Thread Count Schemula

Is there anyway to pause an onEnterFrame event?

Right now I delete the onEnterFrame when an onRollOver event occurs,
and reinitialize it when an onRollOut event occurs, but that causes
all of my motion variables to get re-initiated, and thus makes the
motion go through a huge jump.

Is there a way to pause, and resume an onEnterFrame?

Thanks.

Is shared object going to be the best way to do this?

Re: [Flashcoders] has the user seen the animation? shared object?

2007-02-08 Thread Count Schemula

At some point in the animation, I want to write to the shared object
that the video has been viewed. If, so, then viewed = true and the
next time the user visits the page they skip the animation and go
straight to the ending screen.

There is a replay button so the user could view the video if they
choose. Would the SO interfere with this? And if so, could I just pass
some variable to override it, specialCondition = true

thanks

[Flashcoders] Re: site check please: swfobject issues

2006-12-13 Thread Count Schemula

I uninstalled the Flash Players from my FF and my IE7.

When I went to the site, I got the text message to update the flash
player and a link to the install page. So, that worked correct on both
browsers.

I installed Player 7 for FF and when i went to the site in FF, it
upgraded the browser and that worked fine. I revisited the site, and
it was fine, it did not force me to upgrade again, as she is claiming.

I installed Player 7 for IE, or more accurately, the Active X control,
and IE7 still thinks that there is no plug-in installed at all. I
followed my text link to the player, and installed the plug-in and the
site worked fine. I closed the browser and reopened it and went back
and it was fine, it did not force me to upgrade.

I don't have IE6 on my computer. Is there anyway to have both IE6 and
IE7 on the same computer?

I also don't have a Mac, which is her computer that she says makes her
upgrade every time. I'm guessing she uses Safari, I have not heard
back from her on that yet.

Argh. I hate this part of Flash SO MUCH.

This book is good for looking up the code and getting a quick example

you are looking for. Like Sound or MovieClip methods. It's also cheap,
like $25 or something. I use it a lot.

 I'd suggest the basic reference manuals from MM press: AS2.0 Language

Also, all of the help docs are available from Adobe in .pdf format.
There are thousands of pages of doucmentation there.

[Flashcoders] preloader not completely preloading...

2006-12-11 Thread Count Schemula

I'm using the code at the bottom of this post.

Using the Simulate Download and the Bandwidth profiler, I have two
different files where it's basically downloading about 15% of the file
and then continuing playing.

The preloader starts to work correctly, but basically quits out
incorrectly around 15%.

Looking at the bandwidth profiler, it continues downloading in the
background while trying to (poorly) play.

Any obvious hangups?

No components are in use, all assets are inside the flash file. The
bandwidth profiler shows a linear download, 0 to 100%, just around 15%
or so it just goes on and tries the play the file after showing me the
preloader for the first 15%.

I've used this code successfully before, it's just that now I have a
deadline, so, I guess it totally makes sense that it does not work
now. Grr.

=== CODE ===

// preloader
function checkLoad(mcTarget:MovieClip):Void{
 var nLBytes:Number = mcTarget.getBytesLoaded();
 var nTBytes:Number = mcTarget.getBytesTotal();
 var nPercent:Number = (nLBytes/nTBytes)*100;
 mcLoader.mcBar._xscale = nPercent;
 var sPercent:String = Math.floor(nPercent).toString();
 var sKBytes:String = Math.floor(nTBytes/1024).toString();
 var sMessage:String = sPercent + % of  + sKBytes + K loaded.;
 mcLoader.tPercent.text = sMessage;
 if (nLBytes = nTBytes  nTBytes  0) {
   if (nCount = 12) {
 clearInterval(nProgress);
 mcTarget.gotoAndPlay(main);
   } else {
 nCount++;
   }
 }
 updateAfterEvent();
}

var nCount:Number = 0;
var nProgress:Number = setInterval(checkLoad, 100, this);

[Flashcoders] swfobject - make it failproof

2006-10-30 Thread Count Schemula

For people publishing to Player 8, what steps are you taking when
swfobject + express Install fails?

For example, I don't think express install works with Flash Player 6
and some early versions of Player 7, which is causing me problems
sometimes.

I have text in the div id=flashcontent so, they _should_ see my text
links and my link to upgrade the flash player, but sometimes I'm
hearing that the flash loads, but the Player 8 features (important
stuff like the text) is not showing up.

Here is my var so:

var so = new SWFObject(images/header_01.swf, header_01, 800,
150, 8.0.23, #00, true);

so.write(flashcontent);

It mostly works, but, it's still not 100% and it's causing me strife.

Re: [Flashcoders] OT: sold laptop, need to release Studio 8?

2006-10-09 Thread Count Schemula

I rekon. I just don't see Transfer this License under the help menu.

I sold the laptop. I just wiped the hard drive and re-installed Windows.

So it's moot now.

Seems like I had to call Macromedia once before though, back when I
had MX2004 stuff. I do reformat my computers every once in a while.

No biggie. Calling was a little annoying, but, hey...

Thanks.

 I'm buying another laptop, so, I want intall on that with no hassles.

Sorry for my delay; thanks to Ramses for the link.

The Macromedia activation method mainly checks for many requests made
on the same serial number in short succession. If you're installing on a
new system, months after the last installation, then this wouldn't
usually trigger any notice from the serial-authentication server. But to
be sure, you can just choose the Transfer this License item from the
Help menu, which will tell the server that you've removed the old
installation.

Should be okay either way, but it's better to hit that menu item if you
can. Good...?

Re: [Flashcoders] Vob to FLV without Sound

2006-09-05 Thread Count Schemula

Quicktime Animation is a lossless format.

MPEG-4 and MPEG-1 are compressed.

MPEG-4 in particular seems to crush the blacks, so you loose all your
shadow detail.

MPEG-1 has to be certain specified sizes as well.

You are skipping a whole compression step.

The file will be large though.

I've used Virtual Dub before, it's simple but quality was good.

 VOB is already compressed MPEG-2, so you want to skip any intermediate
 compression step, especially MPEG-1, with it rigid format structure
 and wacky audio of its own.

A lot of times I have to rip the audio out as a seperate file, rip the

video editor to export the video track and the audio track back out as
a single file and then go to final compression.

Flash plug-in plays all flash files.

However... there is now an issues with object tags in Internet

Linux player is usually a generation behind the Windows/Mac player.

If you make the .swf in English, that's how everyone will see it.
Static fonts get embedded, and you need to embed the dynamic fonts.

some basic things...

show how you take inititiative, identify and solve problems, work well
in teams, like people, have a passion for the techniques and the
technology, are adapted to rapid change, have a well rounded education

Also, you can't just sit down and pound out a resume. It takes 1-2
weeks. Day 1 get the core of it written, dates, major projects, etc.
Then every day for 1-2 weeks, spend 30 minutes on it, refining,
boiling it down to the core and improving it.

I just went through this myself, and that's what I learned about the resume.

As far as juniors learn to read the job offers, you can sort of tell

I am developing a CDROM with videos that use FLVPlayback Component. When I load

The fact is that when the video is very long the time of delay is excessive.

I have tried to change the property bufferTime whithout success.

I would like to know if someone of this list already has met something similar
and has been capable of solving it.

Thank you very much

2006-08-19 Thread Count Schemula

FWIW, I did an informal survey on a forum I'm on of car enthusiasts.
Pretty normal computer users.

Out of 15 responses

0 - Player 7
6 - Player 8
9 - Player 9

So, the adoption rate is pretty good.

I asked, and nobody had any idea how they got Player 9. They were even
surprised that they had it.

So, no real need to play it conservative.

Besides, since you need to use swfobject or similar to deal with
Eolas, you might as well publish to Player 8.

Re: [Flashcoders] Flash 7,8,9 , AS 2 and 3 - clarify the situation

2006-08-18 Thread Count Schemula

Seems like the landscape is:

Flash IDE 8 and Flash Player 8 is current. Player 8 offers some nice
features like blurs, drop shadows, really really nice anti-aliased
text and bitmap manipulation.

Thing is, Flash Player 7 is better seeded in the world, so, if you
publish to Player 8, you need to run swfobject or Adobe's Express
Install to check player version and force an upgrade to player 8. Not
_too_ hard on the user, but, they still have to experience a player
upgrade.

It is still quite common to use Flash MX2004 or Flash IDE 8 and
publish to player 7.

Flash Player 9 is kind of a bridge to the future? It has many
performance improvements, and can use AS3. Flash IDE 9 will use AS3
and Player 9, but you can start tinkering around with AS3 now if you
want.

If you think some of the features of Player 8 are worth it (the text
rendering is a lot better, shadows and blurs are a welcome addition)
then check for and force the player upgrade.

Flex uses AS3, so, there is that connection Adobe is using to get
Flash developers going on the transition. Seems like Flex is going to
take over the RIA market and Flash will be used for multimedia widgets
and stuff like you already see out there now.

I'm no expert, but that's my understanding of the situation.

System.security.allowDomain(name_of_domain). That still did not work. I
finally used the wild card allowDomain(*). This also did not solve
the security problem. Is there something I am missing here. If I use the

crossdomain.xml file in the webserver root. And where does this is
crossdomain policy go? In the webserver hosting the flash files or the
one hosting the amfphp gateway.php file??

[Flashcoders] amfphp does not work on my local network

2006-07-12 Thread Count Schemula

I have a laptop running IIS, PHP, mySQL, amfphp

I have a simple amfphp application that works from the webserver laptop.

It works if I play just the .swf file, it works if I call the .html
file from the file:///C/Inetpub/wwwroot/ folder and it works if I call
it its IP address, 192.168.0.50/folder/file.html

It does not work from my development desktop computer on the same
wired ethernet network.

The webserver and network can be called from the desktop computer to
the webserver laptop, so that part works fine.The amfphp app does not
work.

I thought it might be a port issue, so I turned the SP2 firewall off
on the laptop, and that was not the fix.

I have a crossdomain.xml file in my webroot that allows localhost and
the webserver IP (192.168.0.50) and that did not fix it.

I've messed around with the flash player security thing on the web. Nothing.

I'm kind of at a loss.

I know this is really simple, but, it has me up a tree.

That's not the answer to this question, and if there is a workaround,

So, in conclusion, files works EVERYWHERE, except where I need to

Nope. Everything is nice and clean. It's a near virgin install.

Do you get the localhost call in the status bar as well?

It's super simple, it just seems like something about moving the file
online wrecks it. The very same .swf file pulls up the data if I play
it from my computer Test Movie style.

 if Highscores.php is in a highscores or gamesfolder of some sort in

 var _service:Service = new Service(gatewayUrl, null,
 'games.Highscores', null , null);

 try that..

I just added a crossdomain.xml to the web root. No change.

The very same .swf file can pull this data when I do Test Movie.

The server is an online remote host, not my local computer and not the
webserver that hosts the flash file, ie, it's on a different domain,
no matter whether I access it Test Movie or web hosted style.

I know it's something super simple, the file does seem to work in 2
other situations (local web server and Test Movie).

You can do motion type stuff, but you are restricted more or less to
the same types of tricks you'd use with Photoshop due to file size
constraints. After Effects is pretty much just Photoshop with a
timeline.

For more elaborate effects, you will more than likely be better off
creating video in After Effects to utilize in Flash as .FLV files.

Macromedia was a little more straight-up with their downloads though.
The only thing I really like on the surface of this merger is the fact
the Macromedia apps will get tabbed palettes back.

Anyhow, as an example. I had a client over and he needed to open a
PDF. I had a newly formatted laptop and said, sure, use this laptop,
just download the PDF viewer.

A couple of days later I use the laptop, and I had Yahoo! toolbar
going on. I had some sort of Photoshop Starter Something I don't even
know what going on. I'm sure he just went did whatever seemed like the
default download, but unfortunately, I ended up with a bunch of stuff
I did not want on my computer.

Re: [Flashcoders] Preloading locally

2005-11-03 Thread Count Schemula
I would think for CD or Hard Drive, you could just stuff everything
into the main movie, within reason of course. Then when the Flash
movie is opened, all assets are loaded.

If you have a lot of video, just load it from the CD or Hard Drive,
there should be plenty of bandwidth.

The only real reason to load things as needed is bandwidth and loading concerns.

I still try to do good designs, but part of me feels that if you have
a 800x600 computer with 128MB of RAM... you are used to things not
working.

On 11/3/05, Maximilian Reuss [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 As far as i know, local preloading doesn't work.

 You have to check the memory usage of your flash projector if it
 climbs up after each load. From my cd projects, it goes up.
 Before each load you need to unload your previous loaded swf each time to be
 safe.

[Flashcoders] are the wheels off the Flash Player wagon?

2005-10-27 Thread Count Schemula
I just went to the BMW website, and got ready to explore the new M5.

Win XP
Firefox 1.0.7
Flash Player 8

The website checks my extended capabilities and blocks my progress and
tells me that I need Flash Player 7 to view the website.

Sigh.

The more things change, the more things seem like 1996.

What's funny, or not so funny, the bigest websites are the worst offenders.

I'm a small developer and I get raked over the coals for the stupidest
things and then I go to a big boy site and get junked up.

I use Express Install to force people to upgrade to FP8, mostly because I
love the way the fonts look, and I am going to use the new video codec. I
get light traffic, and I just up and change my whole website every so often,
so, it's not really something I want to do - develop an FP7 and an FP8
website.

The ubiquitous player will never be realized. :(

I know that FP8 can do FP7, but the net effect is, websites are out there
messing up viewer access/experiences over dodgy detection scripts.

Actually, I kept messing with it and it let me continue past the warning,
but it was far from obvious that I could do so.

On 10/27/05, Julian Suggate [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 ==
 7) rather than (version = 7).
