[Flashcoders] parsing newlines in textdocuments

2008-09-08 Thread Martin Klasson
Hi Coders,

I am gonna to make a parser for the MicroDVD subtitle format,
but I am not being able to find the documentation, yet a simple example for
how it looks.

but the problem I know I will have is how to parse a text-file that are
having linebreaks,
since they appearantly are different if the textfile has been on a
mac/unix/windows

I hope anyone here can point out for me how to deal with this.

Why I am using the MicroDVD is that the time-codes is being in frames and
not seconds,
which will make it easier for the one producing the swf's which will be
loaded as our movies,
to be able to synch that together with the animations and so on.

but any input is welcome of course!

[Flashcoders] hi All

2008-07-11 Thread Martin Klasson
Am fairly new into the AS3 features, but I guess this still isn't doable:

When I have loaded one swf, can I store it - and use it at multiple places?

it can be done with images that are loaded by using bitmap/bitmapdata and so
on...

but that cant be done with swfs still can it?
I dont have a problem - I am just wondering about if it is possible,
I tried using ByteArray to clone a loaded swf and adding it to another
child,
but that did not work.

Just curious if it should work?

The problem I had existed both in the quicktime-source as well as the

So it seems there is something that has gone bad with the 3d-render, but no
one
knows what just yet.

thanks for the tips though, I will use them soon when I will get a decent
3d-output

 The main issue that's likely causing the stuttering is the constant

 that
 by bumping up the keyframe rate, but that of course will increase the
 file
 size and probably the workload on someone's CPU when it's played.

 I'd experiment with reducing the frame rate to something like 15 fps,
 give
 it a keyframe rate of one every 5 frames, convert the audio to mono and
 try
 tweaking the datarates of the video and the audio to get a good balance
 of
 visual quality and CPU bandwidth use. If your encoder software lets you
 set
 how many passes it makes during video encoding you can set it to use two
 passes, which can improve visual quality at lower video datarates.

 I hope that helps... ^_^

 It's not that bad. I think the fact that there are a lot of hard edes and
 contiuous movement that any faults are more obvious.

 The stuttering was occuring as the video was playing and the file had not
 yet fully loaded (though was not halted to fill the buffer).

 The strange lines you mention appear to be the video player trying to
 keep
 up with the display.

 Despite all this, I think the quality isn't too bad.

 I'd try out a few variations on the encoding to see if that helps.

 I don't think I've ever tried to play such a large video on my laptop
 before. My last video project was 200x150.

 Maybe it is a cross domain issue - but also consider that there was an
 error uploading to whatever domain you're using. Grab the file and make
 sure it plays - one quirk with the sound player (in Flash 9 at lease), is
 that it'll say its loading and playing anything. It's easily fooled - pass
 it a JPG, it'll load and say its playing as a sound. So just make sure
 nothing crazy happened in your upload to the other domain and the sound
 isn't broken.

Re: [Flashcoders] Sounds loaded - but is silent

2008-07-07 Thread Martin Klasson
and Ben,

I better mention this bug as well, but that is a bug that you nor we can
solve.

The function in the gadget, that the drums that are controlling the playback
of the video,
uses computeSpectrum that is a native function in Flash 9/AS3.

There is a bug that when there is another flash opened, from another domain
- that plays sound,
-then the computeSpectrum will stop analyzing the sounds being played in the
swf, since the
computeSpectrum takes ALL sounds being played from ALL flash players running
sound.
-so there will be a crossdomain-issue.

So when you are trying this out, you should know about this bug. So when
testing our gadget,
make sure you dont have any other opened player that is playing sound.

Re: [Flashcoders] Sounds loaded - but is silent

2008-07-07 Thread Martin Klasson
Hello their Ben,
I sent this email to the sales-contact we have at google for this
project - but as you can see below - we can not duplicate this
problem on our own servers - it only happens at google gadget ad editor
preview.

I have already tried out loading policyFiles, but they dont do much,
the swf's that are loaded are accessible and being able to alter the
playhead in those loaded swf's - but the mp3's wont have any sound.

down below is the email, in which you can find out a little more:

I am ready to say that we are done with the IKEA Pax2 Gadget,
but there is one big issue still.

When loading the xml file in your GGAE-editor, the preview does not play
sound when you are tapping the keyboard. Which is the one thing that is
confusing us - as well as being the big problem.

I thought this was a case of the cross-domain loading of the mp3 files
which made it not to work. But, I set up an own test between two domains,
but that worked! - but when previewing the gadget ad at your place - it does
not work.

So I am wondering if,
http://qstream-down.qbrick.com/1005/googlegadget/gadget.xml,
that would be published - would the same problem as in the preview but the
Google Gadget Ad Editor
still exist - or is it only in the Google Gadget Ad Editor this happens?

Would the solution might be to host the gadget at your place and not on own
servers?
-or what do you think.

My test, which did work is here:
http://download.kokokaka.com/ikea/crosser.html

It loads the mp3's from the qbrick-server,
this works - but not when Google Gadget Ad Editor is loading from the
qbrick-server.

So I am hoping you might know the solution.

/ Martin

So I want to call a javascript function that then sets the wmode of the

 And the news items are being moved a 1px everytime the timer event is

 I dont think they are runnning very smoothly. Is that just me or does

 Can anything be done?

[Flashcoders] IE7 wont trigger popups locally

2008-04-08 Thread Martin Klasson
Hi People.

I am having trouble with opening popups from Flash,
I am using getURL to call a javascript-function that should open a popup.

it worked before, and it works in Firefox, but it doesnt work in IE7 when
trying it locally, but it will work in IE7 if run from a server.

It is an older projekt, published in Flash 6,
if I make it to Flash 8 and use ExternalInterface to call the javascript -
then it do work,
but not when running it as it is - Flash 6 with getURL - the
javascript-function will not
be reached.

How can this be solved - without digging through an old application and turn
it to flash 8 and
going that way?

I am using the SWFObject, in a version where it puts the allowScriptAccess
to always,
so it can not be that one that is bugging me.

I can not even make a getURL(alert('Hello World')) in IE7 when running the
page locally.

Hi Coders,

using SetVariable and GetVariable is somewhat funky with the use of

Can I issue a gotoAndStop, or play or so in the same manner - (without the

  No. Classes add their size per SWF file, not per use. So yes, it's 8kb

[Flashcoders] 9-slice scaling not working when used as mask

2008-03-13 Thread Martin Klasson
Hi Flashcoders,

my subject might said it all
am having a mask which is a movieclip with rounded corners, but when used as
a mask - the 9-slice scaling
seems to be out of function.

Is there a way around this, is it a bug or intentional response?

The solution that I know of, but dont like - is to make a movieclip with
different movieclips in it to take
care of the rounded corners in the old-fashioned way.

Hi Stevensacks,

I ended up at your site through the flashcoders-list.
As I do enjoy having an efficient workflow, or wish that I have - I got
your jsfl-scripts.

but I wonder why you, as you are a coder want the same name of
the libraryitem also on the instance - since one libraryitem can
be having mutiple instances.

This is what I have done (having two input alerts):

if (fl.getDocumentDOM().selection.length  0)
{
var libraryName = prompt(Library Name, );
var mcName = prompt(MC Name, );
if(mcName == ) mcName = libraryName;
if (libraryName != null)
{
var newMc = fl.getDocumentDOM().convertToSymbol(movie
clip, libraryName, top left);
fl.getDocumentDOM().selection[0].name = mcName;
fl.getDocumentDOM().enterEditMode(inPlace);
var tl = fl.getDocumentDOM().getTimeline();
tl.insertFrames(2);
tl.convertToKeyframes(0, 2);
tl.addNewLayer(LABELS);
tl.convertToKeyframes(0, 2);
tl.layers[tl.currentLayer].frames[0].name = _up;
tl.layers[tl.currentLayer].frames[1].name = _over;
tl.layers[tl.currentLayer].frames[2].name = _down;
tl.addNewLayer(AS);
tl.layers[tl.currentLayer].frames[0].actionScript =
stop();n;
fl.getDocumentDOM().exitEditMode();
}

[Flashcoders] wmode performance headache

2007-06-18 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi Everyone,

I got a campaign which is using some intense animations,
and everything works well and fast as usual in the flash IDE.

but in the browser it doesnt reach the same speed, as usual,

BUT,
in Firefox, when setting wmode to opaque, than it really goes
great, the fps-counter I have really shows the same fps as the movie.

but in Internet Explorer, opaque makes the flash player to freeze in
some of

the intense animations, the framerate doesnt go down -the whole flash
just freezes for a short time. That is so strange. So window mode makes
the best performance in Internet Explorer.

Anyone who can clarify why, how and what I should do to make the
best performance out of this?

I would believe it is possible, as well as I have seen the jsfl-script

It was a jsfl-script which could take selected layers, and remove every

Because I have long timelines with lotes of ONLY keyframes with lots of
handcrafted
animation -and I want to speed it up (not changing the framerate) so I
need to remove every other frame.

Do you remember such a script on any site? I have had it before, but I

[Flashcoders] Currency Formatter

2007-03-08 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi Flashcoders,

Is there anything out there already perhaps, that simply does convert a
price (a Number), into a currency-formatted string?

prettyNumber(1.25, $...)

well yeah, you know what I am after.. I want it to be able to work in
many markets,
so there is a need to be able to control whether the currency-symbol
should be before the price or after,

eventual spacing, decimals/commas and such.

Is there any actionscript-function out there that already deals with
this in a flexible way?

Re: [Flashcoders] swf/html and swf/swf communication

2007-02-27 Thread Martin Klasson

Yeah, I did some extensive testings on that yesterday,
the only thing is that you can't return values from javascript with only
inline javascript,

-and you have to use void(0) in the getURL to avoid the return-values.

ExternalInterface is good of course, but I am after making all the
functionality in flash

because of the CMS is not that greatly flexible.

But since flash doesnt have browser-detection, it is hard to make out
the correct syntax and so on.

[Flashcoders] Flash Upload and asp.net trouble

2007-02-09 Thread Martin Klasson

Hey everyone,

I have done flash upload with php, and that worked fine,
and now I have an asp.net script -which ALMOST does the job just as good.

The only problem is that when the upload is finished, it does takes a
few hundreds or tenths

of a second before asp.net really has the file where it should be.

In php, I could make a loadMovie on the image I uploaded through the
FileReference immediatley when
flash told me the upload was finished, anyone knows why asp.net is
behaving differently?

Now I make a pause for half a second before making a loadMovie call.

I got source-code if you want to see into the code.

You can copy the fullscreen-javascript from our latest project:

http://www.volvocars.se/campaigns/Local/c30_finansiering.htm

BUT BE AWARE, that popupblockers on Firefox/Netscape on PC DOES NOT
like when CLICKING on the FLASH to open a popup -the popup gets caught
in the

popup-blocker. Works well on IE on PC, as well as safari on mac...

So use a href to make it.. We are soon changing our

[Flashcoders] PMT calculation problem

2007-01-19 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi Flashcoders,

I got a problem which I am in no way to figure out myself,
but someone here probably has a solution.

I found this function when I googled:

function Pmt(r, np, pv, fv) {
   r = r/1200;
   pmt = -(r*(fv+Math.pow(1+r, np)*pv)/(-1+Math.pow(1+r, np)))
   return(pmt);
}

trace( Math.round(Pmt(5, 36, -273168.6, 190300)) );

BUT, the problem is that this PMT-function, which am used in programs
like Excel, .Net and so on,

also have a fifth paramater in which you can send in 0 or 1.

The function above behaves like sending in 0 as the fifth parameter
-as in as the loan is paid of the last day
in the month. But I need to send in 1, and get the result of when the
loan is being paid off the first every month.

the code above traces out 3277, and that is correct if I wanted it to
be when the loan is being paid of the last day in
every month, but I really need it to calculate the monthly payment as
occuring the last day of every month. So I really

want it to be 3263 ;)

Do you know how the line of code can be altered so it suits me?

Here is a description of the standard PMT, how it works:
http://www.techonthenet.com/excel/formulas/pmt.php

Thanks, Martin

RE: [Flashcoders] sound problem

2006-02-24 Thread Martin Klasson

I don't like using stopAllSounds(), I just looks at it as old and
deprecated in my eyes. I rather code so that I know of all sounds via a
soundmanager or other solutions.

I have had problems sometimes with different browsers and and how tabs
works.

Once a stopAllSounds()-trigger also made the other opened browser to
stop its sound that waas playing in another flash, at another domain..

Strange that was, but I guess it has more to do with the browsers way of
handling than the flash in some issues regarding when sounds sometimes
stops when switching tabs, and sometimes it doesn't.

But the player has a role in it to..
-but, yeah, there can be some problems happening that we really cant
control ourselves unfortunately

RE: [Flashcoders] Q: Best tweening engine for Flash 8 filters

2006-01-25 Thread Martin Klasson

The most up-to-date regarding to tweens and filtering tweens are this
one:
http://www.mosessupposes.com/Fuse/

It is great. I love it mostly because it is non-prototyped (well, you
can turn the prototype-methods on as an option though)

I would believe this is the best tween engine that exists for now.
Although it is still under development and improvements I would guess.
But it is great already now!

Zeh's engine WAS the greatest, and then Laco made an own version of his
code to suit the AS2 when it came. And now Mosessupposes has taken it to
the next step.

 I was wondering what everyone is using to tween flash filters.
 The built in tween in Flash, or some third party tweening engine.

You can use the built-in tweening classes to tween filters, but you have
to
work around the way the filters work (ie, you can't *change* a filter
property.. you have to clone it, modify it then re-apply it). In the
end,
it's just a wrap-around.

Personally I've been using my own tweening extensions for that:

http://hosted.zeh.com.br/mctween/doc_blurto.html

They're prototype-based (although they work with AS2) and they don't
work
for all filters though (only blurring, glowing, beveling).

Also, Moses Gunesch has added filter support to the Fuse Kit, so it
might be
worth checking out:

http://www.mosessupposes.com/Fuse/

Check the documentation for 1.1, where it's mentioned.

RE: [Flashcoders] How to Build a Flash Bandwidth Tester?

2006-01-18 Thread Martin Klasson

They could be using Flashcomm for measuring the upload-check I guess.
There might be ways to test it without flashcomm.

Perhaps you could send of a really big xml-string through the XML's
sendAndLoad for flash 7...

Or might use the Fileupload in flash8, but I haven't tested it, and it
probably needs user-initiative to select which file to upload.

But with Flashcomm you could probably do a neat 'hidden' upload-check.
-the download check is easy to do without flashcomm, but upload is a
little tougher.

It's kind of cool... It looks like it calls some server side script
that generates a random noisy image, which it then proceeds to download:

http://chi.speakeasy.net/speedtest/random350x350.jpg

I'm guessing it probably uses MovieClipLoader, which fires off events to
give you the progress updates on downloads. That's how they can
determine speed on the fly. It kicks off downloading that 350x350
image(around 200k), but then it finishes with an almost 5mb generated
image.

The upload test posts a pretty sizable amount of random gibberish(200k
and then 1mb). I'm not really sure how they track that, is there
something akin to MovieClipLoader for uploads with Flash 7? It might
just be a timer, where they just take your Total Size / Seconds Taken...

RE: [Flashcoders] Focus in the text field

2006-01-17 Thread Martin Klasson

One problem might be that you haven't set focus on the swf itself.
An other thing is that you might have forgotten to set it to input

Try a simple fla file, and set the function which sets the focus later
on the timeline, so you have time to click in the swf.

Then you will see it work.
If the swf doesn't get focus first, the textfield will have focus and be
ready for input, but the marker is not blinking.
-THAT is true for doing a Test Movie inside flash.

In a browser, you have to focus the swf before being able to make use of
the Selection.setFocus.

RE: [Flashcoders] Registration points

2005-12-29 Thread Martin Klasson

It could be confusing.
I wish there were two settings of the x and y panel in the
properties-panel.
-one for the content-X/Y, and one for the registrationpoint-X/Y

The X and Y in the properties panel is not necessarily the same as the
_x and _y of the movieclip.

What the X and Y is, is where the _content/graphics_ that resides inside
the movieclip is positioned.

So if you create a new movieclip, with the registration-point in the
upper-left corner. Draw a rectangle in this movieclip and position that
rectangle at x=0 and y=0.

Now move the movieclip you have onstage to x=0 and y=0.

Now it looks super.

Now go inside the movieclip, and move the rectangle-shape you have there
to x=20.

Now go out again, and you will see that the movieclip says x=20 here as
well.

But if you trace the movieclips _x-position, it will say 0. As we
haven't moved the registrationpoint, just the content within the
movieclip.

So what it does is that the X and Y in the panel properties looks for
the content.

The registration point is though always the little cross you see when
selection the movieclip.

RE: [Flashcoders] Problem with delay tween on some instance...

Hi Moses.

I am SORRY for breaking the trust, it was not my intention or purpose.

But the email you sent to me privately, along with the 1.1-files, you
didn't mention that it was a private beta. So I thought it was the new
stable Fuse-kit.

I would think that version 1.1 should contain ONLY the bug-fix for
removeTween, so that all using the 1.0. could upgrade, since the
removeTween-bug easily causes huge problems.

As for now, the 1.0 isn't considered stable, removeTween-bug
And 1.1 is as you are saying private beta.

So we are left out from an important fix.

Would you be able to make a 1.05 version which addresses the
removeTween-bug only. Because 1.0 was very stable except for the obvious
bug.

RE: [Flashcoders] Problem with delay tween on some instance...

2005-12-14 Thread Martin Klasson

The current version mentioned at mosesSupposes site is 1.0.
But there is in fact a 1.1 version which deals with the removeTween-bug.

The bug I am talking about is when setting a delay on a tween wont be
removed when calling removeTween.

As of that bug being fixed in 1.1, there were also features that stopped
working in 1.1.

So I can not recommend this engine as the 1.1 version has some problems,
which DID work in the 1.0 release. To mention one thing is that
doShortcut doesn't work. As well as a few minor things,

I have emailed Moses about this, but he might not be up yet. But when he
is, I hope he will take a look at the problems that 1.1 has brought.

1.0 is not MTASC compatible, so it might be the 'conversion' from
non-mtasc version, 1.0, to the mtasch-friendly version 1.1, that has
caused problems.

As for now 1.0 is the most stable release, but then you will have to
live with the removeTween-delay bug ;(

Jim, it might be you who brought the errors to the 1.1 ?!
I hope you and Moses can do some serious testing and can fix the
problems.

I would like to help, but I am not in position to write and start
learning every thought and every line of code at this time. But I
certainly helps you out with the testing-phase ;)

[Flashcoders] detecting when mouse goes outside of the flash

2005-11-23 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi coders.

This has been up before, and I have done some own tests and searched the
archives as well.

But I can't find the solution, if there is any.

I want a certain thing to happen in my flash when the mouse moves
outside flash. Since the _xmouse/_ymouse stops updating when dragged
outside you cant rely on them (they do work WHEN mouse is pressed and
dragged out from the swf, but that is of course not a solution)

I have also tried to add a big 'button' which has onRollOut/onDragOut
attached to it, but the problem is that button-events above it will
disable the underlying one.

So what I know of there is no solution to this problem, but probably
some decent hacks?

I am not interested in a solution which requires code in the html-page
or so, but if you have such one I would like to know about it as well.

But mainly I wish to know a solution in which flash internally can say
if the mouse-cursor is outside the flash in the html-page.

Thanks Coders

[Flashcoders] antiAliasType woes?

2005-11-16 Thread Martin Klasson

Looks to me like the margins within the textfield changes slightly when
antiAliasType is set to advanced. That is not good. (if you toggle
between normal and advanced)

Another bad thing is that when you toogle between normal and
advanced on the same textfield, there can be some lines which wraps
differently.

antiAliasType is a great feature, for the sake of readability. But it
has some bad side-effects. Have you guys found out anything else
disturbing about the antiAliasType?

[Flashcoders] zeh/laco and MovieClip.as

2005-11-15 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi Coders.

An issue that I have dealt with before is now again coming back as an
issue.

We would like to use a tween-engine as the one of Laco or the one of Zeh
Fernando.

The problem as I see it is that in either one of the tween-engines above
you MUST make changes in the MovieClip.as file.

And I am not alone about NOT LIKING to do modifications in such a file.

But it is needed to prevent compile-errors in as2-classes, or is there
another solution yo want to share?

An ALL-static tween-engine would be nice. So that it wouldn't run as
methods on the movieclip-instance.. I guess.

But we don't want to develop a new tween-engine, we don't have time to
do it, or nor is it easy either to make a great one ;)

What do you think about this? About modifying the MovieClip.as -it cant
be of good practice?

We would rather have the tween engine as a seperat class (static members
only) which we can import.

And still have all great functionalities that the two really great
tween-engines out there (zeh's and fernandos)

[Flashcoders] embed/filesize woes with Arial Versus Arial Unicode

Hey Coders.

A little test I made to embed Greek-charset ended up with that when

How come it turns out to be like this?

I was about to use Arial Unicode MS for building font-files for

wont be a good solution.

So how come the filesize does like it does with Arial Unicode MS

Is it a character that can not be displayed by my OS, or is it a non-existing

So the embedding character-sets having glyphs that is not supported will still

[Flashcoders] packets and downloads

2005-11-02 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi People.

Some basic underlying facts should be needed about the I/P-protocol.

When a file, as swf is for example 1.5 megabytes, is it really 1.5 that
is downloaded. Or is it more really, since every packet, according to
standard is 576, and 40 of them is the header.

This would cause a thing so that you rethink some loading aspects in
flash, as well as bandwidth-checking and streaming-loaders perhaps.

Do you have found any great articles which take this into details? It
should be very fun to get more-in-depth knowledge about this basic but
yet VERY complex.

Subject: Re: [Flashcoders] Singleton and Listeners is a bad combination

Hiya,

I reckon that it would be a good idea not to make it a singleton but
create new instances every time. The fact that you are running into the
problem with listeners is a pretty clear indication that you require new
instances to be created for every use of the class - not really the
right scenario for a singleton.

The FontLoader class could hold a static list of fonts that are already
loaded for internal reference - but the SWFs that are loading the fonts
don't need to know about that kind of logic - they simply need to know
that they can use the FontLoader class to load a font that they require.

Hope that helps,

Nils.

Martin Klasson wrote:

Hi Coders.

I got a class which I thought would be improved by using the Singleton
pattern. And it does, until I am adding in the EventDispatcher.

The problem is that my application will using the FontLoader.getInstance() at
several places in different classes and files.

The problem arises since you can set addEventListeners to the instance.

If you in class A has:

fntController = FontLoader.getInstance()

fntController.addEventListener('onFinished', fontsLoaded)

And in Class B you have the same as class A, just to state an example of the
problem...

The problem is that since FontLoader.getInstance() returns exactly the same
instance everytime. So when class B fontsLoaded is called, the fontsLoaded is
also called in class A.

The problem is that even though you can use removeEventListener, you might not
want do that since you might still want the fontsLoaded to be working in class
A another time.

One solution is that you in class A and class B doesnt have the same name for
the function that is given in the addEventListener -but that doesnt seem like
a neat solution to depend on that when several developers might write the same.

As well as boring for the EventDispatcher used in the FontLoader to call
listener-function which might not exist in the different scopes/classes where
the FontLoader istance is.

So I thought the best way would be to do the class ALL static, but the problem
would still be the same with the listeners.

I can only come up with one solution, and that is to do the usual, that you
will have to instanciate the class.

class A

private var fntController:FontLoader = new FontLoader(); // now I can have
listeners which just would listen to this instance.

class B

private var fntController:FontLoader = new FontLoader(); // now I can have
listeners which just would listen to this instance.

This will make them able to have listeners that wont interfere with each
other. Is this the best solution, or do you know of any other solution that
you think would suit this scenario?

Listeners are incredibly great, and I am thinking on the Key-class, that has
addListener, which is a static class and should suffer just as well as my
FontLoader-listeners does. But somehow it doesnt fit the FontLoader.

What do you think, any general advices?

Singleton and EventDispatcher doesnt come in handy when you are having the
getInstance() at several places in an application, or am I wrong?

Thanks.

[Flashcoders] removeEventListener not working?

This is the line in which I add a listener

this is the line to remove it, but it doesn't work:

fntController.removeEventListener('onFinished', this)

The fntController-instance is available, that I have traced out and so,
so it might be a simple error in the removeEventListener, but I cant see
it.

-but then I will have the wrong scope as well in the functions that gets
called ;(

So how do I remove a eventlistener when it has been added with a
delegate?

Subject: [Flashcoders] removeEventListener not working?

Hi People.

I am using the EventDispatcher, and it works well with dispatching
events and all. But I cant remove them.

This is the line in which I add a listener

fntController.addEventListener('onFinished',
Delegate.create(this, fontsLoaded));

this is the line to remove it, but it doesn't work:

fntController.removeEventListener('onFinished', this)

The fntController-instance is available, that I have traced out and so,
so it might be a simple error in the removeEventListener, but I cant see
it.

RE: [Flashcoders] removeEventListener not working?

2005-10-27 Thread Martin Klasson

I just read about it on another site.
Seems to be the only solution, to store it in a variable.
-that is a little to bad really, but I guess I have to live with that.

Thanks for your answers.

You have to store a reference to the delegate to be able to remove it.
A modification of a post by Till S:

function clearListeners():Void {
   fntController.removeEventListener('onFinished', fdelegate);
}
var fdelegate = Delegate.create(this, fontsLoaded);
fntController.addEventListener('onFinished', fdelegate);

cleanListeners();

I pasted in wrong line at the bottom, should be like this:

// ADD
fntController.addEventListener('onFinished', Delegate.create(this,

// REMOVE DOESN'T WORK
fntController.removeEventListener('onFinished', Delegate.create(this,
fontsLoaded));

[Flashcoders] what is the major documentation-style used for within as2?

2005-10-27 Thread Martin Klasson

It looks like there is plenty of alternatives on how to write
documentation.
Javadoc, js-doc, asDoc, naturaldocs

Which is the best one to use?

http://www.as2doc.com
that is a site which gives me the gd feelings, since it also
contains how-to's and walk-troughs.

What do you have to say?

[Flashcoders] Singleton and Listeners is a bad combination

2005-10-27 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi Coders.

I got a class which I thought would be improved by using the Singleton pattern.
And it does, until I am adding in the EventDispatcher.

The problem is that my application will using the FontLoader.getInstance() at
several places in different classes and files.

The problem arises since you can set addEventListeners to the instance.

If you in class A has:

fntController = FontLoader.getInstance()

fntController.addEventListener('onFinished', fontsLoaded)

And in Class B you have the same as class A, just to state an example of the
problem...

The problem is that since FontLoader.getInstance() returns exactly the same
instance everytime. So when class B fontsLoaded is called, the fontsLoaded is
also called in class A.

The problem is that even though you can use removeEventListener, you might not
want do that since you might still want the fontsLoaded to be working in class
A another time.

One solution is that you in class A and class B doesnt have the same name for
the function that is given in the addEventListener -but that doesnt seem like a
neat solution to depend on that when several developers might write the same.

As well as boring for the EventDispatcher used in the FontLoader to call
listener-function which might not exist in the different scopes/classes where
the FontLoader istance is.

So I thought the best way would be to do the class ALL static, but the problem
would still be the same with the listeners.

I can only come up with one solution, and that is to do the usual, that you
will have to instanciate the class.

class A

private var fntController:FontLoader = new FontLoader(); // now I can have
listeners which just would listen to this instance.

class B

private var fntController:FontLoader = new FontLoader(); // now I can have
listeners which just would listen to this instance.

This will make them able to have listeners that wont interfere with each other.
Is this the best solution, or do you know of any other solution that you think
would suit this scenario?

Listeners are incredibly great, and I am thinking on the Key-class, that has
addListener, which is a static class and should suffer just as well as my
FontLoader-listeners does. But somehow it doesnt fit the FontLoader.

What do you think, any general advices?

Singleton and EventDispatcher doesnt come in handy when you are having the
getInstance() at several places in an application, or am I wrong?

Thanks.

[Flashcoders] MTASC, in sepy, syntax check has problems with Delegate for example, why?

2005-10-26 Thread Martin Klasson

I cant understand why MTASC is throwing an error at some points. Am
using it within SEPY.

I got a class which imports mx.utils.Delegate,

But when I later on uses the Delegate.create(this, myFunc)
The MTASC compiler says that it is a unknown variable, the Delegate it
is.

This has been up before I would believe, but couldn't find it, nor at
the arhives or by using google.

Please do help me to clarify this.
Is it macromedia who has made a non-ecma-compatible class for Delegate
perhaps? Or is the MTASC having a bugg? How can I get around this?

I love to have the MTAS to check syntax, and since I use Delegate
everytime I don't want such a problem with this ;)

RE: [Flashcoders] RE: Multilanguage sites

2005-10-26 Thread Martin Klasson

I got my own SharedFonts solution which works nicely. I just developed
it to a site that will have 60 different markets.

The remaining question is how to know which character-sets different
alphabets does require -this is not easy.

I would like a site which shows ALL characters for every specific
variant:

Turkey:
Abc.. and all characters needed to cover up Turkish and so on.

Then it also would be easy to control whether the font has all required
characters as well.

I don't want to embed unnecessary glyphs since they aren't needed, so I
would love to have that very knowledge of every alphabet -but I cant
find it.

THANKS if you can help out with glyphs, characters for every alphabet.
-as well as a countrylist on which uses the same character-sets or so..

My advice: DO NOT use different character sets. Stick with Unicode
(UTF-8).
My games in Flash are in French, English and Chinese. Flash handles
Unicode
natively so I have the different translations in one single file (they
are
small games so it doesn't take much space). Our database handles Unicode
so
it communicates with Flash seamlessly. I also tested with Japanese and
Arab.
It seems ok although my knowledge in these 2 languages doesn't allow me
to
check thoroughly.

I've been approached to put together a site which will ultimately have
10
language variations (some of which dont use the latin alphabet).

Were thinking XML driven content for a start, but what are the major
pitfals
to look out for when putting a multilanguage site togehter. I've done
some
top level research and figure theres goingto be issues with character
sets
etc.

Does anyone have any links to good resources or advice to give ?

Thanks in advance

[Flashcoders] illegal URL-character?

2005-10-25 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi people.

This might now be really flash-related, but it is though a part of the
process and problems that can occur.

I got files named like
config{ip-to-local}.swf

my concern is if the {}-characters in filenames on different servers
does work? I have tested it on a w2k and a w2003 server with IIS. But I
don't know if these filenames are limited somehow in any other
environments.

Do you know?

Is there a list with what is legal and illegal characters and so on?

[Flashcoders] allowDomain must be domain

2005-10-24 Thread Martin Klasson

Hi people.

This will work:, apple-site just an example
allowDomain(www.apple.com)

Will this also work?
allowDomain(www.apple.com/quicktimes/index.html)

or do I have to extract the domain-part of it before adding it in?
is there a built-in-way to extract the domain perhaps?
