Re: [Flashcoders] Playing big FLV files (locally) - where's the problem ?

2007-03-16 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

You can sure use RED5 but if all you need to do is play the video,
setting up and maintaining a server might be a lot of work. Look into
multiple FLV file playing. It plays a list of FLV files seamlessly,
but it has many advantages.

I know it's been done but I'm quite sure the source hasn't been
released. I was thinking of developing one myself but haven't found
the time yet.

On 3/15/07, Cedric Muller [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hello,

On my local machine, I have a SWF loading that local downloaded FLV.
It works great ...
but here comes that awful heartbeat again:
How can I handle 2 gig FLV files ?
Is there a way ??
Must I use RED5 in order to 'stream' the FLV locally ? (the best
option I come up with right now)

I did tests, and a 2 gig FLV is a sure problem when played locally ...
I am just and plainly seeking ideas and help

Naively, I thought the OS would handle this case ...of course it
doesn't, because it depends on the computer's capacity to load a 2
gig FLV in memory ...which is quite weak normally

Thanks in advance for any pointers,
Cedric

It sucks though that in a place like the Philippines (where I am),
people aren't into this technology so much yet. They almost always
think that Flash is for fast computers and high bandwidth. Most
likely, even if a team feels they are quite skilled, their skills are

To answer your questions, yes it's quite active. Even here, there is
some advancement, however small, in embracing the technology, thanks

Re: [Flashcoders] flv sometimes playing sound only

2007-01-10 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

Sometimes the video is playing, but every once in a while, only the sound

It particularly seems to be a problem the first time the swf loads -- or if
you clear your cache and then reload it. If you reload without clearing the
cache, it works fine. It's as if the player needs to be primed by trying to
play the video once and failing. After that, it works.

Some details:

--the video is being loaded via rtmp.
--I'm using the flvPlayback component's activeVideoPlayerIndex and
visibleVideoPlayerIndex properties to load videos into new players.
--I've read that when using the rtmp protocol, you sometimes have to leave
off the .flv extension from the path inside the .load() method. I am. It
makes no difference.
--I'm using the latest version of the component.

You can see the swf here:

http://bandtools.nabbr.com/bandtools/media/thepack/thepack04.html

It's somewhat hard to reproduce the problem (sound but no video). It may or
may not happen to you the first time you play it (and they be fine on a
refresh). It may or may not happen to you if you clear the cache before
playing.

I've posted this before, but it may help you:

http://board.flashkit.com/board/showthread.php?t=659163

As you can see in that post, if you do any scaling or rotation to a
cachedAsBitmap MovieClip, it temporarily becomes a vector again, just
to update itself. That class can force a movieclip to stay as a
bitmap, even if you make it super big. Of course, it'll get blurry if
it's too big.

Key is to taking a snapshot of what you want at the biggest size it'll
be, or updating the bitmap data when it's at it's biggest size.

On 10/11/06, Jason Ross [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi - thank you to both Ian and Ramon.

And yes, the pictures are scrolling, but they are contained in
movieclips that contain vector data (i.e. to artwork around the photos).
See what I mean? Though I take your point as through my experimentation
I get the same results whether CacheAsBitmap is turned on or not.

Great idea to unload / reload as they come on / off the screen! Will do
that one right away.

Thank again.

If you're scrolling pictures, you don't really need to cache as
bitmap. It would be best to use it when there's a lot of vector data
that bogs the system down when animating.

One thing you could do to optimize things is whent he pictures go
offscreen, unload them.

I'm proud to announce FZip, a cute little Actionscript 3 class i've been

standard ZIP archives and extract contained files while the archive is
still loading.

Check it out:

FZip is released under OSI approved zlib/libpng license.

Sample usage:

public function YourApp() {
var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(your.zip);
var zip:FZip = new FZip();
zip.addEventListener(FZipEvent.FILE_LOADED, fileCompleteHandler);
zip.load(request);
}

private function fileCompleteHandler(evt:FZipEvent):void {
var file:FZipFile = evt.file;
trace(File loaded:  + file.filename)
trace(   + file.sizeCompressed);
trace(   + file.sizeUncompressed);
}

I cant work out how I did it, as whatever I import its either a bitmap
or fireworks folder. (when i'm looking at flash assetts).

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Re: [Flashcoders] Fwd: Application Framework

2006-08-31 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

It looks like you need xfactorstudio's xml xpath :)

And yes, Flash can do what you need it to do here

On 9/1/06, Jeff Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hello List.

I'm a programer with a good background in PHP, Smarty, MySql, javascript and
other web technologies. I'm working on an application that needs to blend
PHP and Flash components together. Since I haven't touched flash since way
back in the dark ages, I'm a little put off at the current interface. (Not
in a 'I-hate-you' way, but more in a 'Will-this-do-what-I'm-thinking' way).

Okay, this boils down to two different questions. Esentially the app is a
database driven lookup engine. The PHP/Smarty will decide based on user
input and business logic to display an item. The PHP templates need to write
out the HTML/XHTML for a Flash component.

Question 1:

Assuming my item id is 123 and my template writes: param name=i_id
value=123 / into the object/object block, can my flash's action
script 'get' the variable i_id. And would my action script be able to use
i_id as a variable directly?

(I've seen some sort of confirmation of this on the list, but no qualitative
answer).

Question 2:

Now assuming my flash has the id, it needs to load an XML file from the web
server, based on the id. as in

http://my.server.com/myapp/xmlfile123.xml

Obviously interpolating the value of i_id into the url it uses.

(behind the scenes, the server uses an URL Rewrite to map
http://my.server.com/myapp/xmfile123.xml to
http://my.server.com/xmlgen.php?i_id=123 which is a PHP script that
'speaks' XML and produces an xml file filled with database data)

The xml contains a list of categories and their colors and a list of related
items and their details that will be something like the following:

---xml code---
data
  grouplist
group id=1 name=a group name bgcolor=#aabff fgcolor=#882299
highlight=#33 /
group id=2 name=the second name bgcolor=#bbaaee fgcolor=#882299
highlight=#AA8844 /
...
  /grouplist
  itemlist
item id=456 group=1 name=my first item name
url=http://my.server.com/myapp/show/456
 /
item id=789 group=1 name=another item name
url=http://my.server.com/myapp/show/789
 /
item id=333 group=2 name=third name  url=
http://my.server.com/myapp/show/333; /
...
  /itemlist
/data
--/xml code---

With me so far? In theory, I can use the action script call:

-code
getxmldata = new XML();

getxmldata.load(xmlfile + i_id + .xml, );
/code

to load this up. I've seen some examples of this. And I've seen examples
of loading the attributes for a give 'node' (as in the group or item tags
above). But I'm not sure how to process the grouplists and itemlists.

I mean do you think this could be processed with:

-code-
/*
** Note, I'm basing nearly all of this on code examples, but I'm flying
halfway blind. I'm not certain that an XML sub object
** suports 'firstChild, 'lastChild' or 'nextSibling' If not, I'd like to
know what to use.
*/
if (getxmldata.loaded)
{
var grouplist= getxmldata.firstChild;
var itemlist   = getxmldata.lastChild;
var groups:Array = [];
var items:Array= [];

var last = grouplist.lastChild;
var group = grouplist.firstChild;
do
{
   groups[group.attribute.id]  = group;
   group= group.nextSibling;
}
while (group != last);

last = itemlist.lastChild;
var item = itemlist.firstChild;
do
{
   items[item.attribute.id]  = item;
   item = item.nextSibling;
}
while (item != last);
}
/code-

Or is there a better way to handle all of this?

Just hoping for either some pointers, or general help

Try changing your function to this:

//use the delegate
this.menuBtn.addEventListener(click, Delegate.create(this, onHit1, 1));
//create the btn event to handle the click
function onHit1(n:Number)

trace(it was hit with the number:  + n);

But I get returned:

it was hit with the number: [object Object]

What would I be doing wrong?

Re: [Flashcoders] |:::| can you write dynamic meathods in a class?

2006-08-11 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

I don't think you can create dynamic functions.. even if you could, I
don't see the need to.

use your arguments to make your functions all-purpose.

Ex.

function onBtnPress(n:Number):Void
{
 trace(n +  was pressed.);
}

button0.onRelease = Delegate.create(this, onBtnPress, 0);
button1.onRelease = Delegate.create(this, onBtnPress, 1);

On 8/12/06, Bbt Lists [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Hi there

Can you write dynamic methods in a class?

for example

for (var i:Number = 0; i  11; i++)
{
function onBtnPress + i()
{
   trace(Button number:  + i + was pressed);
}
}

So then that would essentially create 10 methods (onBtnPress0 to
onBtnPress9) to be used by various onPress events.

Is this possible? Then at the same time you could write the delegate and
create the buttons and so one as well.

Then continuing on my thought - could you then over-write the onBtnPress
functions with new values (say for example the trace would be:

trace(Button number:  + i + was pressed with the currValue of  +
externalVariable);

instead of the original:

trace(Button number:  + i + was pressed);

I am a hobby AS coder, and I am probably way off here. All I am trying
to do is build a thumbnail nav for a gallery.

Thanks in advance!

Ah! I never knew you could throw args like that to your functions
through delegate

Sweet!

That totally makes more sense!

Now my next question

Say for example I needed to throw a different arg to that function?

IE this time I needed one var, and later I needed another?

var nMyNum:Number = 0;

button0.onRelease = Delegate.create(this, onBtnPress, nMyNum);

nMyNum = 10;

//need to update the delegate here
//button0.onRelease = Delegate.create(this, onBtnPress, nMyNum);

Can you remove or overwrite delegate instances?

Re: [Flashcoders] Custom cacheAsBitmap with scale and rotate

2006-08-01 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

The problem with that is once you rotate or scale it it reverts back to vector.

Also another neat thing about dynamically forcing something to become
a bitmap is it makes your sites loads smaller (as compared to raster),
if it's a largely vector site. The problem with largely vector
drawings is that they're slowww... hence, you can get the best of both
worlds with the BitmapDataManager.

I must admit though that it was a quick hack and I haven't worked on
it since - i.e. adding the feature to pick your resolution, etc.

[Flashcoders] Ignoring error in code on compile

2006-08-01 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

Hi everyone,

I want to use Screenweaver to create a desktop application. Just like
the other SWF2EXE programs, you can arbitrarily call an object, like,
swFile.function to access the commands.

The problems comes in when I put these commands in classes and I
compile the classes. How do I tell Flash to ignore these errors and
continue compiling like those weren't there?

The workaround would be ugly (pointing to the root that contains the
functions), and I'd like to avoid that.

You have to use $_GET or $_POST to get your variable.

I wouldn't use the mail script like this, you'll have to do some checking on
which data is passed.
mail() has a posibillity of header-injection.

[Flashcoders] What is the error when LoadVars fails?

2006-06-29 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

Hi everyone,

I have a site that uses LoadVars. Currently, all the files except PHP
files are hosted on server 1. The PHP files are on server 2. I did
it this way because we have control over the permissions in server 2,
and not server 1.

I use this code:
http://pastebin.ca/74723 and I published the swf file to access network only.

With other classes in Flash there's a function onLoadError that
returns an arg Error, in this case, it's just a Boolean.

When both swf and PHP are in the same server, it works fine. But when
I use the code above, I get an error. I'd like to know what the error
is so I can fix it.

Thank you,

Thank you,

Re: [Flashcoders] Chipmunk-sounding MP3s?

I don't think it's the bitrates, but the hertz.

The MP3s they're using are voice-overs encoded at 16kbps mono which
play fine in QuickTime Player, but when loaded into Flash (via the
Sound object) play back at super-speed and pitched up.

I was told at some point that Flash can only handle certain encodings
and bitrates of MP3s, but 16k/mono is one of the options for
exporting, so I would expect that it would be able to handle loading
them as well. Is there a list of what bitrates are supported
somewhere? Google isn't giving me any love.

[Flashcoders] Updated Flash Game Programming Book -- reviews

2006-06-19 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag

Hi everyone,

I want to buy a flash game programming book and I might as well get an
updated one. I searched Amazon and saw this:
The Flash 8 Game Developing Handbook

Amazon link:

I didn't find any reviews on it so I was wondering if any of you have
used it and know it's a good book.

[Flashcoders] XPath, apostrophe, XPath's escape chars?

2006-04-10 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Hey everyone,

I need to search an XML via a string that may contain apostrophes.

ex.:

Is there a way to escape the apostrophe? The problem is that the
sReleasedLabel, which contains Chinese New Year '06, is thought to
end at ... Year because of the apostrophe.

I've tried / and \ as escape chars but they don't work.

Got any suggestions?

 You should be able to use double quotes surrounding the expression
 you are looking for...

 XPath.selectNodes(_xml, //[EMAIL PROTECTED] + sReleasedLabel + \]/
 @writeup)[0];

 This is something that wouldn't work in an xpath statement in an XML
 file, but you should be able to get away with it in ActionScript
 depending on whether the xpath library you are using supports this
 notation.

 Other than that there is no solution to your problem. Better to
 encode your attribute values so that they contain apos; instead of
 apostrophe characters.

 Cheers,

 Steve

You might wanna put this psuedo code in your onLoadProgress:

 I have used several times to load swfs, but on a recent project the target

 start playing at around 40%. I am using onLoadInit. I think that is firing
 once the whole swf is loaded. I am probably over thinking it.

Re: [Flashcoders] Slightly OT (Hello world! and so forth ;)

2006-04-04 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
 How do YOU work in Flash?

 -Timeline

- I try to create the graphics that don't need to be dynamic in the IDE.
- Those that need to be highly dynamic are made using AS
- I animate what I can using the IDE, but if it'll be dynamic and
might be controlled at any time, I use AS to animate.

 -Scripting (OOP, scope, frames)

I love delegate and eventdispatcher.
I avoid onEnterFrame, I try to use Intervals instead

 -Tools (external scripting, other external tools)
FlashDevelop, MTASC

 -Built in behaviors and objects (Use / don´t use)
I use a lot of these - I use all that I can. This is a bit vague :o

 -Putting it all together (multiple cooks?)
I recently tried having a main class that puts everything together.
It makes error checking hell of a lot easier.

 How do YOU structure a project?

 Let´s say i´m making a custom video interface. Pretty straightforward.

 and i´ve got 1 dynamicaly loading videoclip.

 1 set of player buttons (Play, Pause, Stop, FFW, REW)

 1 volume control

 1 animated playhead (with the posibility to drag it to any spot in the video)
  I've made classes for these already.
- VideoStreamer is made of a bunch of classes that take care of
loading, the sound, etc.
- VideoStreamer uses VideoLoader that has it's own smart buffer
- To instantiate VideoStreamer, I just pass as an arg an embedded
video object that is on stage.
- ProgressBar class, of which I pass the needed movieclips that become
the played progress bar, the downloaded progress bar, and the
background bar.
- The progress bar is the one that takes care of dragging the playhead
only in the region of the downloaded progress bar has achieved.
- Then, to put it neatly together, I made a VideoPlayer classes that
uses the VideoStreamer and the Progress bar (and a volume slider, but
it's not part of the question), listens to the their events and puts
it together in such a way that it works super neat.

So, if I was gonna make ur project now, I'd do something like this on
the timeline:

import ...VideoPlayer;

var vp:VideoPlayer = new VideoPlayer(video, playProgBar, dlProgBar);

//then for the extra buttons if I need any:

buStop.onRelease = Delegate.create(vp, vp.stop);
buPause.onRelease = Delegate.create(vp, vp.pause);
buPlay.onRelease = Delegate.create(vp, vp.play);

Gosh here I am pressed for time with two deadlines tomorrow and I'm
answering this! Well, I gotta go! Goodluck!

ActionScript Preferences.

Then, he removed and added the $(LocalData)/Classes and the old errors
appeared again.

This isn't the first time 2 IDEs displayed inconsistent errors
compiling the same things.

I'm not really sure there's an answer here. My colleague uninstalled
and reinstalled the IDE and it's working fine now. It's just pretty
annoying to find out there can be errors that appear on one computer
and not the other by something not caused by the code. What if there
wasn't another computer to confirm this? Would be hours of figuring
out .. nothing!  Hehe.

Thanks!

 set the text property of a field within the attached clip immediately after
 attaching it. So, why is the text property of a field available immediately,
 but a method not? I'd expect to have to wait to set any properties or call

Re: [Flashcoders] Wherefore the evils of _global?

2006-03-23 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
I suppose it's the use of variables in _global. That's what I avoid.
Else, 5 years later, when you've got extensive classes, and something
ddoesn't work, it might be because some variables overwrite one
another in _global. That'd take almost forever to debug.

On 3/24/06, David Stiller [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 In the last few days, I've seen a handful of people refer
 apologetically to use of the _global object. To paraphrase: I'm in a

 general, this gives me the impression that it's fashionable here to think of
 _global as Evil -- or in the very least, yucky.

 I understand why _root can be troublesome, especially in conjunction
 with dynamically loaded SWFs, but I do use it in a pinch. I mean, heck,
 sometimes a movie is just a movie, not a portable app.

 What I don't understand -- and I hasten to say I have no opinion on
 the matter, yet -- is why _global is so shunned. After all, _global is
 exactly where AS2 classes are located. Is this a religious issue? Is it
 because of how _global gets shared (or not?) among dynamically loaded SWFs?

Re: [Flashcoders] proportional image/clip scaling

Here are two functions I just copied from a class of mine:
_nScale is the scale it will be, assuming that a perfect fit to the
container box is 100%.

nLPW - is the width of the container box
nLPH - is the height of the container box

the code also centers the mc to the box.

private function resize(mc:MovieClip):Void
{
mc._xscale = mc._yscale = 100;

var nRatio:Number = 0;

if (isWider(mc))
{
nRatio = _nLPW / mc._width;
}
else
{
nRatio = _nLPH / mc._height;
}

mc._xscale = mc._yscale = nRatio * _nScale;

mc._x = _nLPW / 2 - mc._width / 2;
mc._y = _nLPH / 2 - mc._height / 2;
}

private function isWider(mc:MovieClip):Boolean
{
var nProportionPhoto:Number = mc._width / mc._height;
var nProportionBox:Number = _nLPW / _nLPH;

return nProportionPhoto  nProportionBox;
}

[Flashcoders] Problem: Bold, italic, normal text style in a dynamic textfield

2006-03-21 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Hey everyone,

I'm problems with showing italic, bold and normal text in a dynamic
textfield, behing a mask, all at one time.

To make things simple:
I have a textfield (tf) in a movieclip (mc) on the stage, which is masked.

I embedded all characters, for testing purposes.

mc.tf.htmlText = hello; - works like a charm.
mc.tf.htmlText = hello iworld/i; - world doesn't come out but
at least world is italicized.

Now, if I click on the italic button in the properties of the textfield,
mc.tf.htmlText = hello iworld/i; hello doesn't come out.

It's the same story with bold. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks,

[Flashcoders] Help with custom class that uses Sound. Needs = MX 2k4

2006-03-14 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Hey everyone,

I've been at this problem for several days now. I'm afraid I won't be
able to figure it out because of the elusiveness of the problem. It
only comes out when I play the SWF/EXE, but it works just as expected
when I do the test movie. It also works fine online.

I built a class called SoundStreamer that uses SoundLoader. It's a
class that's basically like sound class but I wanted a smart buffer.
However, to be able to use a smart buffer I'll have to edit the TLEN
tag in the ID3 v2 tag.

All the files are in one zip:
http://share.quirkworks.net/sound%20test.zip

It includes the FLA, the classes, and the sample mp3.

Try testing it using test movie, then publish it and play the swf alone.

I also use LuminicBox Logger. You may or may not install this. It
makes AS coding life a lot easier though. It's dirty simple:

1) Unzip http://share.quirkworks.net/LuminicBox.zip into your class path.
2) Run the SWF that's in http://share.quirkworks.net/FlashInspector.zip

Please, I direly need your help.

Thank you!

[Flashcoders] Help with BitmapData - BitmapDataManager

2006-03-09 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Hey guys,

I quickly whipped something up before. It's called the BitmapDataManager.

It's a class that allows a movieclip to stay as a bitmap so that it's
easier to animate complex vector data.
For more info read http://www.flashkit.com/board/showthread.php?t=659163

This is where I need help: right now, scaling the movieclip that will
be rasterized and then rasterizing it doesn't work. It still takes a
snapshot, but it does like as if it were still its orig size. It's
hard to explain. Look at the fla. :)

Here's the source:
http://share.quirkworks.net/net-BitmapDataManager.rar

Here's the class implemented with the examples I'm talking about:
http://share.quirkworks.net/bdm_test.fla

Yup, you need Flash 8.

I'm sure I could just edit the Matrix or something like that and input
the scaled size so that it takes the correct snapshot, but I can't
seem to figure it out.

_mc.getNextHighestDepth() );
this._sound = new Sound(_mc[mcSound +

Re: [Flashcoders] Frame accurate FLV Dynamic Playlist??

2006-03-06 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Hi Mike,

I might be wrong, but there isn't any way to tell a flv file to play a
certain frame. The closest you can get would be to play at the
converted (and estimated, which might defeat the whole purpose)
millisecond time of the video.

I'd like to be wrong though... because I may have use for this as well.

Re: [Flashcoders] Remove right click menu

2006-03-06 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
True, it would work a lot like www.goowy.com does (without FireFox,
because for some reason [probably the superimposed HTML], right
clicking the Flash window doesn't work in FireFox).

You'll still see the Settings and About or something like that...

Re: [Flashcoders] Re: How does goowy do it? (HTML in Flash)

2006-03-05 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Goowy has a webclient and a desktop app, but the superimposed html is
on the web app.

And one more curious thing is that they use Flash, but on FF, when I
right click, no flash menu comes out, and I can use my mouse gestures!
 But it's strange that I've seen that happen only in FF.

Re: [Flashcoders] Game Develop in Flash 8

2006-03-03 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Are there recommended books available that use AS2.0?

I understand that even the Flash MX 2004 version of Jobe Makar's
book is much like the first (according to reviews in Amazon).

I found a couple of others that got good reviews but not close to as
many reviews as I would have wanted (1-2 reviews).

Re: [Flashcoders] Microsoft Internet Explorer update and consequences for Flash

2006-03-02 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
Firefox forever..

This definitely will be an issue. One reason why I use Flash is
because it [used to] work[s] , afaik, fine in all browsers - Opera,
FF, IE, Safari, unlike AJAX where there seem to be a lot of glitches
in Opera.

Another of course is the warranted eye candy.

This is bad news indeed.

Re: [Flashcoders] Sound.stop(linkage) problem

2006-03-02 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
You're right, I figured it out a few hours after posting.

It's fine I suppose, since I have an all-around SoundStreamer class
that is instantiated from the timeline this way:

ss = new SoundStreamer(this);

Better than nothing. :)

Thanks!

  I was pulling out my hair a while ago because in my movie, when I

  Looking at the documentation, it says you can specify what sound to
  stop using a linkage ID. I understand that'd work fine if you use
  sound.attachSound (getting a sound from the library), but what if you
  use sound.loadSound(file)? What is the linkageID now?

  Thank you,

Re: [Flashcoders] Z sorting multiple overlapping movie clips

2006-03-01 Thread Ramon Miguel M. Tayag
mc.swapDepths(getNextHighestDepth() ) works with me. It puts it above the rest.

Parameters

target:Object - This parameter can take one of two forms:
- A Number that specifies the depth level where the movie clip is to
be  placed.
- A String that specifies the movie clip instance whose depth is
swapped with the movie clip for which the method is being applied.
Both movie clips must have the same parent movie clip.
