RE: [Flashcoders] Video on IOS

2014-03-12 Thread Rick
Yup, video plays behind the display list only, under the stage, because that is
where the gpu can process it rather than the cpu. So, I think the workaround is
to have the background graphic as a frame, which is in actuality above the
video with a transparent center, but at least preserves the appearance of
background graphic consistent with the style of your app.
Take what I say here with a grain of salt as I've only really dealt with video
in an AIR app in the real world for android, so perhaps someone else can weigh
in with more hands on knowledge and iOS experience. I read up on it a while
back for an iOS AIR app that ended up not including the video component.

RE: [Flashcoders] TLFTextField drowning me ...

2013-08-27 Thread Rick Hassen
I think you are quite right that this is a problematic api. While I can't
address your specific question, I had tons of problems with TLF in the past. It
caused strange bugs that would break my movies(this was in CS5) At the time,
there were a lot of complaints on the forums with TLF with the solution simply
to not use it. You can google problems with TLF text to see a lot of the
issues and some of the clunky, heavy workaround solutions.
I noticed that Flash CC no longer supports TLF, which I found gratifying - as I
had lost tons of hours dealing with it, while on deadline no less.
So, good luck, as it sounds as if your application requires TLF!!! But if you
weren't too far committed, I thought this bit of history might help you in your
decision making to use the api at all.

 So I have this complex TLFTextField vortex where I try to let user format
 text with … Bullet Lists for example.
 So … so so …. I have got this overly complex and deep question to whether
 some did write this API or was it thrown together by some spaghetti monster ?
 (ok, this is some intentional pun towards bad Adobe documenters not doing
 their work)

 Here goes my question/remark/complaint/doom:
 Why is it /so/ hard to remove a ListElement ?

 If you wish to answer, don't bother reading, just get that:
 How can I remove a bullet list I added with EditManager.createList ?

 I see EditManager.createList (which works perfectly) but why on earth no one
 did a 'EditManager.removeList' ???
 How can I remove a bulleted list I added with code ? Why is it not available
 per se in the EditManager public methods ? Since when do we use a Class to
 createSomething, and totally fail to provide the removeSomething part ?
 The only almost feasible way I found was using ListElement.moveChildren … but
 mn: this only happens to be a success if you don't add button that let
 the user decide when he/she wants to format some part of some text …

 This TLFTextField is quite a debacle. I wonder if Adobe people know that no
 one can handle such bad APIs and documentation :'(

 I have written a lot of AS3 code with classes and before that was mostly
 a Java developer and I have yet to have written an AS3 project that has
 used private classes for anything at all but singleton enforcement.

 I'm trying to get a handle on whether I've been missing out or people
 are using private classes where they weren't needed.

 Does it really matter that much? perhaps not. For me, private classes
 are some secret coding hidden from the world and segregated from the
 main class. If a class is important, it's probably important enough to
 be a public class. If it's not that important I suspect it could have
 it's functionality coded as a helper function for the main class.

 I have never really been a fan of private classes because IMHO they
 introduce added complication, quietly, where it's probably not needed -
 hence my search for an example to change my mind about this.

 Anyone have a concrete example where a private class suits perfectly
 (and doesn't involve singletons)?

 This is your chance to educate me.

Hi Karl,
One: AS3 does allow private classes. Just not as the constructor class of the
main file. ( I am not sure if subclasses can have private constructors but
everything else can be private )Two: Private classes are a best practice,
Internal is also good, public only when necessary to create an api.
Hope that helps. I don't know where you are getting your information, but you
may want to consider getting a good AS3 book.

compares, I'd like to know...

 Yes, I don't deny JS and Unity3D are great, but at first, please try to

 great for AAA-projects, of course, if you want to make money.

[Flashcoders] Flash 8 accessibility, need some help

2007-08-24 Thread Rick Schmitty
So, I cant for the life of me, figure out how to setup tab indexing
accessibility with Flash 8.

Problem is, we have some movie clips that have onpress/release
functions to act like a button and (do a bunch of animation bells and
whistles on rollover etc) I need to figure out how I can tab to those
buttons

Say we just had a simple login form, with a fancy animated button.
username field, tab, password field now some people will just hit
enter right then and submit the form. while others try to tab to the
submit button and hit enter.

Here is my simple example file
http://rs218.rapidshare.com/files/51022299/tabindex.fla

Now I have given an tab index number to the 2 text fields and the
movie clip. I set the movie clip to be tabindex 2 so I know if skips
the clip or not (since i really dont have a visual indicaor showing
that you are tabbed on the movie clip)

I've also set the following

btn.tabEnabled=true;
btn.focusEnabled=true;
btn.tabChildren=true;

and the flash docs said you need to have an onpress or release function as well

but despite all of that, it just tabs right past the movie clip. So I
think I'm leaving something out that will be glaringly obvious after
someone else sees what I missed

Any help much appreciated!

[Flashcoders] Version control and Flash

2007-08-10 Thread Rick Schmitty
We are starting to add our flash projects to SVN but by large every
project has all of the AS code inside the actual movie leaving us with
just fla's in the repo

We are working on getting everyone to develop with .as files they
include in the fla, but is there a limit as to how far that should go?

Should there be any code in the flas besides the #includes?

How do you go about organizing your folders when you are making an
AS1/AS2 project?

Do you mimic the folders in the fla with the appropriate as file locations?

I'd like to make it easier for everyone to use SVN while still getting
the benefit of having plain text code in the repo

Thanks for any guidance

[Flashcoders] Q: Including class at compile w/o explicitly instantiating it

2007-08-10 Thread Rick Terrill
Hi everyone, it's my first time posting to the board.

I'm trying to figure something out, or if it's even possible. I would like
to dynamically instantiate a class (via getDefinitionByName) but without
explicitly instantiating the object prior in the class.

An example (this is what I would like to be able to do):

package
{
import com.sweet.*;
import flash.utils.getDefinitionByName;

public class Foo
{
public function Foo()
{
 classRef = getDefinitionByName(com.sweet.SomeSweetClass) as
Class;
 var mySweetness:Object = new classRef();
}
 }
}

I figured that the import would take care of it, but it doesn't. I have to
do at least one 'var ssc:SomeSweetClass = new SomeSweetClass();' and then it
will work. If not, then I get a reference error like:
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable SomeSweetClass is not defined.

Is there any way to do this with Run-Time libraries, or some directive or
metadata or something? Or is there something really obvious that I'm
missing?

t.i.a!

[Flashcoders] How can you measure performance of your movie?

I've been tasked with optimizing/tuning a flash movie to try and get

I see many areas that I can improve the swf, but how do I quantify
what I have improved to my boss?

Is there any standard practice for measuring how fast your swf is
running?  Look at the FPS?

Is there a program that records cpu/memory use as you run through a flash movie?

[Flashcoders] Transform tool help - without the matrix

2007-01-03 Thread Rick Schmitty

Is there a tool that lets you strectch and rotate movie clip objects?
(not skew, I believe that requires the transform matrix math)

Similar to this guy, but only using width height and rotation modifications

http://senocular.com/flash/actionscript.php?file=ActionScript_3.0/com/senocular/display/TransformTool.as

Reason I ask (and perhaps theres another solution) using the transform
matrix with anything in text will actually transform the text to be
larger (probably as expected for most) but I'd like for when a user
expands an object the text area inside it grows keeping the original
font size.

Any ideas?

Re: [Flashcoders] Copy Paste into Firefox

2006-07-12 Thread Rick Lecoat
Tony;

Is there a chance that the pasted text is actually including a carriage
return at the end? Sometimes I've copy pasted stuff into a one-line text
field and thought where is it? when actually I've included a hard
return in the copy and so the pasted text has been pushed up one line,
out of sight.

Don't know why this would be different in IE and FF though, so maybe
it's not that, unless IE treats pasted carriage returns differently.

It's a long shot, I agree, but a quick thing to check before delving deeper.

Hi,

This is really simple question but I can't seem to dig up an answer.
copy paste flash firefox seems to match everything but what I need
on Google. So sorry in advance for bringing up this topic which must
have been covered before.

WTF is the problem with pasting text into the flash player on Firefox.
I have an application that requires users to copy in a string for
translation. Works fine on IE, but on latest version of Firefox
running on XP or 2000Pro the keyboard shortcut to paste text from the
clipboard won't work. Not unless you press it twice, then you get the
text twice...

TextField, TextArea or TextInput component it make no difference, and
I get the same thing when calling the swf from a html page or
directly, eg. mydomain/test.swf. Right click paste works but I can
hardly ask my users to do that now.

Any leads appreciated. Links, work arounds, anything.

Oh, the swf is compiled for the flash 7 player.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

[Flashcoders] weirdness passing string to text field

2006-07-05 Thread Rick Lecoat
Hi,

I'm trying to pass a sting variable (var teamName:String) to a dynamic
text field nested inside a couple of layers of MCs. The path is correct
because the text field is being changed by the variable, but the string
itself is corrupted or something because the variable's contents seems
to be being altered.

Trying to send the string Mr Jones results in the text field showing
M Joe. Trying to send the string Executive results in the text field
displaying Eee.

As you can see, it is not even a simple truncation of the string (such
as perhaps might have been the case if the text field were not big
enough to hold the string); it is as if Flash is just choosing a few
letters and ignoring the rest.

Can anybody shed any light on this? I'm new to Actionscript and every
(probably simple) stumbling block like this throws me completely out of
the ring.

Many thanks.

Re: [Flashcoders] weirdness passing string to text field

2006-07-05 Thread Rick Lecoat
Ian and Adrian;

You hit the nail on the head; it was indeed a lack of embedded
characters and my own stupid fault because whilst I *had* embedded the
characters for the intended usage (uppercase only) I neglected to stick
to those when I was running my trouble shooting tests, and included
lowercase as well.
There also turned out to be a secondary (or maybe primary) problem --
targets not yet being instantiated at point-of-code -- that needed
fixing before the font embedding issue made itself known. And of course
when more than one thing is giving trouble simultaneously it's hard to
figure out just what is going wrong. Now that that both are fixed it's
working fine.

However, I'm still slightly confused, because I thought that if the font
was installed on the machine that is testing the movie then it would
still show up okay whether embedded or not. The fact that it doesn't is,
of course, a benefit because it gives early warning of non-embedded
fonts but it does run contrary to what I thought I understood. Live and learn.

Chris: Thanks for elaborating on the restrict issue. Looks like I won't
need to explore it just yet, but it's good to know about. (Since I'm
very new to the Flash/Actionscript thing and am learning 'on the job'
with a project deadline looming I'm being pragmatic and just learning
the bits of AS that I need to make the project work. I'll flesh out my
knowledge afterward).

Thanks to everyone for all your help.
I'm sure I'll be back again with more questions *very* soon...

This sounds to me like what happens if you embed a certain set of characters
in the field but then pass it a String including characters you haven't
explicitly embedded. I'm guessing you may have pasted a string into the
Include these characters: field in the Character Embedding window? If
so, only those characters will be embedded with the field and you'd probably
be better off just selecting Basic Latin in the predefined character sets.

Back again.

Well, I *thought* it was working...
What do you guys make of a situation where a movie works in Test Movie
but not from the web server? Here's the deal:

variable1:String populates textField1  (initial value =  )
variable2:String populates textField2  (initial value =  )
variable3:String populates textField3  (initial value = Click on a
photo to learn more about the person)

Variables get changed according to button clicks.

When I run Test Movie, the first two fields are blank as expected and
the third one shows the instructional text as set by the variable.

Publish... upload to server... clear browser cache to be sure...
But now:

first two fields say ee
third one says undefined

Clicking buttons, which should rewrite the text fields, also gives the
same results.

For the record, text fields one and two just have uppercase glyphs
embedded, whilst the third one has upper and lower case, numerals, and
punctuation. These choices are appropriate to the text that the button
clicks will enter.

So, why will it work in test but not online?

Glad to be of help Rick.

On the font embedding thing v. the font being installed on your machine, I'm
pretty sure that if you specify a font but don't embed any characters then
Flash will use the installed font but if you embed then Flash will only look
to the embedded characters for display and will ignore the installed version
of the font. Hope that makes sense!

Good luck with your deadline!

Re: [Flashcoders] weirdness passing string to text field

2006-07-05 Thread Rick Lecoat
Call off the hounds, I've solved it.

it turns out that when the a nested movie clip called the variables it
called them from one nesting level up, and I'd coded that as
_root.variable. Flash was fine with that in testing, but the browser
plugin didn't like it. Once I'd changed the path to _parent.variable it
was all working as planned again.

Odd that the Test Movie behaved differently though.

[Flashcoders] MovieClipLoader vs component

2006-06-30 Thread Rick Lecoat
Hi to all on the list from a new sign-up.

I'm also new to the whole AS thing, so do please bear with me if I ask
questions that seem obvious or stupid to those with more experience then
I (which will be all of you).

The book that I used to teach myself Flash offered two ways of loading a
SWF inside another movie; one was by using a movieClipLoader, and the
other was by using a Loader component.

The first way seems more complicated (needs for AS code), but I'm also
wondering if it offers more control than the component option.

What is generally considered to be the better way?
Thanks in advance;

[Flashcoders] Flash and Javascript Interaction

2006-06-09 Thread Rick Root
I posted this to cf-talk but decided this was probably a better place to
post it...

I'm trying to play a flash movie with javascript. This *SHOULD* work
but it does not. Can anyone tell me why?

http://www.opensourcecf.com/cfopenchat/demo/door.html

When you go there you'll hear the sound of a door opening (if you have
flash and sound enabled).

When you click Play Door Sound the javascript should replay the flash
movie, but it doesn't and I can't figure out why.
