[Flashcoders] File browse and Mac filetype

2009-04-15 Thread Romuald Quantin

Hi,

I'm facing a really annoying problem on Mac Leopard 10.5.6.

I built an app with AIR and it requires that I select the path of an
existing application, let's say Flash.

To select the path, I wanted to select the application use a
file.browse(). It works well on Windows but on Mac the Adobe Flash
CS4.appremains grey and disabled, making me unable to select it to
validate my path.

I tried to change filters and the macType property of the FileFilter but
nothing works, I'm just not able to select an app file...

Is there anything I can do? Any hint?

Basically I have a main movieclip (group) and then several other movieclips

I was thinking I could access them like this group.page1, group.page2 and
so
on. However it is not working for me.

Here is some stripped down sample code, obviously the moviclips have
content
rather than just being blank:

///

var group:MovieClip   = new MovieClip();

addChild(group);

var pages:Object  = new Object();

pages[page1]= new MovieClip();

pages[page2]= new MovieClip();

pages[page3]= new MovieClip();

pages[page4]= new MovieClip();

pages[page5]= new MovieClip();

pages[page6]= new MovieClip();

for each (var page:MovieClip in pages)

{

   group.addChild(page);

}

group.page1.width = 200;// [Fault] exception,
information=TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined and has no
properties. Fault, initScene() at Main.as:103

So I get this error when trying to access the width of page1 inside group:
[Fault] exception, information=TypeError: Error #1010: A term is undefined
and has no properties. Fault, initScene() at Main.as:103

Any ideas how I can access the page movieclips within the group movieclip?

Thanks!

Hello,

does anybody please have an idea, why would this code:

private function handleComplete(event:Event):void {

..
if (urlvars.bids != null  urlvars.bids != 0) {
trace(urlvars.bids);

still print out null? Is it maybe because null != null in AS3
and I have to perform some other check similar to isNaN()?

[Flashcoders] Flash Future - Unity3D, iPhone and performance

2009-03-20 Thread Romuald Quantin

Hi,

Not sure that's really the right place for it, but... I'm wondering what
are your thoughts about that.

Which Flash Developer has never had a struggle with Flash Player
performance and garbage collection?

I'm not surprised apple doesn't want flash on their iPhone because of
performance issues. You can say not it is not true, it is because of
their PDF renderer, and they have a flash player running on the iPhone
in their lab, blah blah. But the Flash Player is a slow virtual machine,
isn't that right?

Even AIR applications are always kind of slow, not as quick and reactive
as a desktop application should be, and this because of the Flash
Player. Just resizing a window, select text or other simple action is
not as reactive a real desktop application should be.

When I see what the Unity3D player (and very lightweight in terms of
file size) can render, WOW. Yes the Flash Platform has wonderful tool
and framework to create applications, but how long before someone is
coming all these tools (such as AIR, the Flex framework, layouts and
components)? Maybe Unity? Maybe another?

On the iPhone you can't see a Flash site or a Unity3D site, if I'm not
wrong unity has created a tool to convert Unity application to iPhone
application (not web-based then), but... where the hell is that Flash
Player converter to create iPhone application from AS code? What is
Adobe doing about that? How can 35 people from Unity can be more
reactive than Adobe? Does Adobe have a problem with the Flash virtual
machine?

With today's computer, how can a virtual machine be that slow? And I'm
not talking about web-based application that can limited by the browser,
but also AIR application.

Even if Flash will be here for a great bunch of years, I don't see a
real good future unless they re-write a real new Virtual Machine that is
taking all the power you can use from a computer.

If I'm not wrong Flash is running on Google Android phone? Is it working
well?

You might say I'm completely wrong, fine, I dont know everything. I'm
just asking questions. I'm just wondering what's going because I have to
struggle about Flash Player performance.

What do you think? If the Flash Player a great virtual machine or will
it be overwhelmed by other technologies if Adobe does not react? Is
there something I'm missing? Flash Community is a wonderful one, I'd
like to think the Flash Platform will evolve.

Re: [Flashcoders] Strange behaviour ByteArray to BitmapData object

2009-03-16 Thread Romuald Quantin

Did you try
myByteArray.position = 0
before reading it ?

You can try to use a Loader.loadBytes to instantiate a Bitmap (it uses a
loader but it takes no time).

Do you load the picture before storing the bytes?
If it is helping, I built a loader that is storing bytes for a cache
system and use Loader.loadBytes to instantiate the Bitmap:

http://www.soundstep.com/blog/downloads/somaloader/

To be sure your ByteArray is compressed, you can:
bytes.position = 0;
var compressed:uint = bytes.readUnsignedByte();
if (compressed == 0x43) trace(ByteArray is compressed!)

Little tips if you want to test, instead of using setPixels to fill
your Bitmap, using graphics.beginBitmapFill seems quicker and less CPU
intensive (test it, I'm not 100% sure).

Re: [Flashcoders] Advanced Rollover Physics/Math...

Element awareness remind me of what I read in the Keith Peter's book
Advanced AS3 Animation.

I would go to use a Vector2D class he has recreated from other
programming language (there's also a Vector3D class built-in in flash).

He's talking about the Craig Reynolds' demo (which are element moving in
the same direction like a bunch of birds):

http://www.red3d.com/cwr/boids/

The class make things easier to handle sterring behavior, such as seek,
flee, etc...

I would start with this way of animating things, add the size and the
mouse behavior in a custom class.

You can download the source there:
http://www.friendsofed.com/download.html?isbn=1430216085

and see the demo in the chapter 2.

Hope it helps.

No they don't, a parent class should take care of all of that.
The elements themselves should not be aware of any of this and should
be told (by the parent class) when and how to resize/animate/etc..

Do you know kinda where to start... I'm trying to figure out how I
would program the awareness of the elements.

There must be some kind of idle position, and every element needs to
know where the mouse cursor is and to know in wich direction to move,
and know how big it needs to be according to the mouseposition, and
how much space there is inside his 'zone', etc. etc.

Hi List,

Does anyone have a bulletproof method for dynamically resizing your SWFs
from within the SWF? eg, if you have SWFs which have expandable vertical
content that sit within the flow of an HTML page. Something like this:
http://2mdc.com/resizableFlash/

I have tried doesnotcompute's lovely BrowserCanvas (
http://www.dncompute.com/blog/2008/06/23/browsercanvas-the-worlds-easiest-way-to-dynamically-resize-flash.html)
 and
found that it only works for 1 SWF per page. (It always resizes the first
SWF, no matter which SWF needs resizing.)

I have also tried the wonderful Mustard Lab Resize Flash technique (
http://www.mustardlab.com/developer/flash/objectresize/) - however, to my
surprise I couldn't get it working with properly SWFObject in IE6 and
Safari. It works fine in FF and IE7. I found that, while the containing DIV
was resized appropriately, the Flash height (set to 100%) was not filling up
the DIV. I'm still not sure why this is; it works if the SWF is placed on
the page using JavaScript to write out the tags (which is how it is
implemented by Mustard Lab). Unfortunately it does need to work with
SWFObject.

Any ideas would be much appreciated,

Cheers,
CB.

Let's say you built a flash library and one of your class (ex: Main class)

IConfig is an interface because you want to be sure the guys are going to
pass a class as a parameter that implementing IConfig:

public class MyConfig implements IConfig

and then instantiate:

var main:Main = new Main(new MyConfig());

Why doing that?

You want to be sure that you will have the functions required in the Config
class passed as a parameter to make it work correctly.

The interface describe it:

public interface IConfig {
function init():void;
function get myPropertyNeeded():String;
function myFunctionNeeded():String;
}

If they pass a Config class that miss one of these functions/properties, you
won't be able to compile as you need to pass a proper IConfig
implementation.

Sorry if my example is not really good, I'm not an OOP wizard, neither a
teacher :) but I hope it helps.

RE: [Flashcoders] removeChild madness

2008-09-09 Thread Romuald Quantin
I'm not sure but I think you don't correctly remove the onEnterFrame Event.
As you use the weakReference you miss the false in the remove method, you
should remove it that way:

removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, onEnterFrame, false);

If this doesn't solve your problem, I usually set the instance to null after
a remove:

removeChild(dw);

dw = null;

I hope it helps.

I know there's a lot written about the Garbage Collection, and removing
assets in AS3...

I'm trying to get my hands around it, but I'm still strugling ;)

A simple example:

I'm adding a MovieClip from the library, and I'm removing it as well, like a
toggle.

The MovieClip contains the System.totalMemory property.

If I keep toggling the MC on and of... the memory keeps going up...

I'm destroying the MC and removing it from the displayList...

But it's not cleared from the memory. What Am I missing?

ToggleCode:

private function toggleDebug() :void

{

var dw:debugWindow_lib = getChildByName('debugWindow') as
debugWindow_lib;

if (dw == null )

{

var debugWindow:MovieClip = new debugWindow_lib();

debugWindow.name = debugWindow;

addChild(debugWindow);

}

else

{

dw.destroy();

removeChild(dw);

}

}

Class

public class debugWindow_lib extends MovieClip

{

public function debugWindow_lib()

{

addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, onEnterFrame,
false, 0, true);

}

private function onEnterFrame( e :Event ) :void

{

var tM:Number = System.totalMemory / 1024;

totalMemory.text = tM.toString();

}

public function destroy()

{

removeEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME,
onEnterFrame);

}

}

[Flashcoders] BaseUI v3

2008-08-13 Thread Romuald Quantin
Hi everyone,

I released on my blog BaseUI version 3.

BaseUI is an AS3 layouts and assets manager. It makes you able to use on a
DisplayObject properties you can find in the Flex framework: top, bottom,
right, width, percent width, ratio and so on. You now have a canvas and some
subclasses to display lists: horizontal box, vertical box and a tile.

Here is where to find demo, docs and sources:

http://www.soundstep.com/blog/2008/08/12/baseui-v3-layout-manager/

You sort of can, but not online.

You can online if you are OK with faking it. You can set up a virtual
cursor you control with Actionscript - hide the real cursor and use a
graphic of one that looks just like it, and control it's behavior with
Actionscript, including dispatching of events. If you're not doing
anything fancy, the user will know no difference if you use it right.
Then show the real cursor as needed for more complex mouse actions like
dragging and dropping. Here is a virtual mouse class:

run full screen, run a socket server and connect to it, have
the socket server answer a command and position the system

Hi all,
I've download the flex 3.0.1 sdk and uninstalled flashplayer 9 and installed
the last version of flashplayer 10. I also downloaded and installed FD 2297
revision.

Now when I create a new project in FD, set the flex sdk in both application
settings and project settings beside pointing the project with the swc file,
it seems that the new classes are not working.

I wrote a simple example like this:

public function Main():void
{
var S:Sprite = new Sprite();
S.graphics.beginFill(0xFFff33, 1);
S.graphics.drawRect(20, 20, 100, 150);
S.graphics.endFill();
addChild(S);
S.rotationX = 20;
}

The rectangle draws and all. But the rotationX does not change. Neither
rotationY or rotationZ as well as the .z property are not workin alltough
code completion shows them all.

is there something wrong I am doin??

Thanks

Hi,

I did some work recently for a DVD, but it did not have any video.

I found this guide indispensable for making sure the DVD ran on PC's
 Mac's http://www.s-j-t.co.uk/flashkit/HybridCDv1.1.pdf and authored it
on a PC with no problems - CDEverywhere is good, a bit pricy, but
probably worth it in the long run.

One of the things to remember is not to worry about getting Autorun
for the Mac working - Apple removed this feature from the system
around OSX and I have been told that most Mac users are smart enough to
click the icon you set up for them

The nice thing about Flash CS3 is that the projector it creates for
the Mac looks like a folder of rubbish on the PC, but is seen as an
application by the Mac too.

Not sure about streaming FLV from the disk, but my application had a
text search facility that ran through a lot of files without too many
problems.

I recommend doing the Wrapper + Application element discussed in the
PDF too... I built my application in Flex, but created a Flash
projector wrapper. Apparently there are possible problems with this,
but I did not encounter them and I have some code to minimise this if
you go that route, but otherwise Flash + Flash is a fine way to do it...

My mate did some DVD stuff with opening PDF's and had to do a bit of
messing around to account for Mac CD and any stuff involving opening
files / running commands outside the application will be a pain. There
are a number of paid for extensions that are supposed to help with this,
although apparently Zinc and other 3rd party projector tools will make
this easier, but I did not have the time to learn them.

http://www.atomiksoftware.com/fire-up/index.htm
http://www.flashjester.com/?section=tricks_jtools_jstart

http://www.multidmedia.com/ - Zinc
http://screenweaver.org/doku.php - Screenweaver (Open Source)

I think there are a couple of others, but again, have not found them...

Lots of testing will be needed, so buy a stack of DVD disks. :)

Hope this helps a bit.

RE: [Flashcoders] Re: AS3 - Eclipse FDT - Problem with Embed Fonts

2008-07-30 Thread Romuald Quantin
Are you making mxml file with FDT?

mx.core.FontAsset is part of the Flex Framework if I'm not wrong. You can't
use it for Flash, like you can't use Tile, HBox or other part of the Flex
framework.

For flash with FDT

- you can load a SWF containing the fonts

- add a SWC containing your fonts in the compiler
In the compiler arguments add:
-include-libraries C:\Fonts.swc

- use the metadata tag Embed (not work in flash IDE, only with Flex SDK):
http://www.scottgmorgan.com/blog/index.php/2007/06/18/runtime-font-embedding
-in-as3-there-is-no-need-to-embed-the-entire-fontset-anymore/

A useful method to check what's embedded

public function showEmbeddedFonts():void {
trace(Embedded Fonts);
var fonts:Array = Font.enumerateFonts();
fonts.sortOn(fontName, Array.CASEINSENSITIVE);
for (var i:int = 0; i  fonts.length; i++) {
trace(fonts[i].fontName + ,  + fonts[i].fontStyle);
}
}

Hope it helps.

RE: [Flashcoders] When to use AS3?

2008-07-30 Thread Romuald Quantin
Good idea of the new thread.

AS3 is definitely better in term of performance and stability, the
Papervision3D guys can probably talk about, see the differences between the
as2 and as3 version.

AS3 is also a lot cleaner than AS2, easier to maintain IMHO.

Another good way to see when to use AS3 would be reading this:

Hope it helps.

Nice one :)

As i said earlier; we also have advising roles to play. If a specific
project needs specific technology, dont bend or sway for less. Try to
convince/explain the client why. Especially if the concept comes from
the developing party, they thought about it, they'll also make it.

I know sometimes clients can be difficult, what i have noticed, as
long as you explain why and show them figures, they'll go for it.

Or tell them the competitors ARE using AS3, two seconds ... they'll
reconsider ;)

RE: [Flashcoders] OT: Questions to ask an interviewee

2008-07-30 Thread Romuald Quantin
It does make me feel depressed as well :)

I'll have to find someone to hire in the next month and I'll focus on his
own source code and what Meinte and Zeh said previously.

For me it is very important to see if the interviewee is interested in what
he's doing (coding) and most of all id he's enjoying what is doing. Having
knowledge is a very good thing but people who goes further is mainly because
they love what they're doing, not only because they know or because they're
cleverer.

I don't know about you guys, but that checklist of skills and the
possibility of getting that on an interview make me depressed.

Of that list, I'm pretty sure I can do it all, but most of that are not
something I do all the time every day so I may have the gist of it, but
not know the syntax down to its every comma. I personally use the
reference *and* the internet every tie when writing code - for example,
I never use cue points, and while I know perfectly well how it works,
I'd have to see how the event works and do a few tests before applying
it to my code. Nothing huge that takes day of research, but still.
That's I think just shooting a lot of questions to the interviewee may
help filter out the crap but also won't help you find the best
candidates; I honestly think good developers, specially in the Flash
world, are the ones who can quickly find the answer to a new question
before having to ask around, be it by using the reference, be using by
using the internet, or by testing. Remember this technology changes at a
fast pace. Having a catalog of techniques in your mind may show
experience, but there'll be gaping holes if the guy's work was focused
somewhere else or if he's not very formally trained.

Personally, on an interview, I'd ask to see the candidate's previous
work that's online (doing so next to him). Ask him what kind of
techniques were in place on that particular website, question him about
interface elements. Give hints on how you'd do something he has done and
see his reaction, whether he gets into it and start discussing code
with a peer or whether he shows he's full of shit. Ask how long that
particular work took, and whether someone helped him, and what external
classes or frameworks he used. Ask him what kind of work he liked the
most, and why. Which was the most difficult one he did recently, and
why. Ask what kind of work he doesn't like doing. Try to get a hang of
how he works, and try to understand what motivates and unmotivates him.
If possible, ask to see some real-life code he's produced, and then see
what kind of techniques he does apply on real code more than just
knowing the number of a dozen design patterns.

I don't know if you guys get too many interviewees or something that
warrants a list like that to make things faster. But for website
development in Flash, I think there's so much more that's necessary than
just schoolbook knowledge that focusing too much on the checklist really
seems counterproductive and sad to me.

RE: [Flashcoders] The Charges Against ActionScript 3.0

2008-07-17 Thread Romuald Quantin
Well, I've coded years with AS2 and I have to say, except for the problem
with loaded SWF, which will probably be solved soon:
http://www.gskinner.com/blog/archives/2008/07/additional_info.html,
I'm not missing AS2 at all!! I'm not from another language but AS3 is a lot
cleaner, nothing to compare. So yes, I guess it is easier to use.

Probably because I'm not using a lot the flash IDE, but I can understand
that for people who are using it or to make quick dirty test, some old AS
features can be missed.

 Everyone forgets their roots. Nobody remembers what it was like when they

 were first learning Flash and learning the basics of programming.

 Colin Moock forgot his roots when six months ago he wrote an article about

 how easy AS3 was to learn and how n00bs should be learning it right out
 the gate.

 Colin Moock has now remembered his roots and written what amounts to an
 effective retraction of his original article.

 Anyone who looks at the archives of Flashcoders knows where I stand on
 this issue. People who say all these features in AS3 are much better are
 either

 1. Experienced, talented coders, or people who came from other programming

 languages.

 2. See 1.

 Yes, it's really bad to put scripts on MovieClips or nested in some
 timeline somewhere. But, it's also really good for some designer who just

 needs to get some glorified banner out the door.

 Yes, it's questionable OOP to use _parent._parent, and it's certainly hard

 to maintain, but it's also really good for some animator who just needs to

 set the text of some TextField two levels up.

 Advanced coders often take their intelligence and knowledge for granted.

I'll put myself in the or people who came from other programming
languages. camp.

As such I find AS3 far easier than AS2, which seems very quircky by
comparison.

I think the main reason there appears to be some bad feeling about AS3 is
that (naturally enough) people get familiar with things and don't like to
see them change.

My opinion is that for flash newbies AS3 is far simpler to learn than trying

to get to grips with the idiosynchacies of AS2.

I'll freely admit that if you have an easy animation job that's disposable,
AS1 is the way to do it.

Generally speaking I'm with Patrick not Moock on this one, but as you say it

probably depends on your background where your sympathies lie.

Paul

RE: [Flashcoders] variable in e4x filtering

2008-07-09 Thread Romuald Quantin
Yeah well, this wasn't the important thing, but the syntax with the
wildcard.

The best would be:
_officesXML..*.(attribute(name) == NJ Agency)

It will search in everything and won't throw an error if the property name
doesn't exist.

If the name is not unique, it will a problem though, or you will have to
test the length() of the result and make action with it if more than 1.

hasOwnProperty(@name) checks if the node has the attribute.

If I understood well your need, you might want to have a look to
model-view-controller framework, to Cairngorm or pureMVC.

It will centralize your events and actions (commands) through only one
interface, making things easier to debug and develop.

Hope it helps.

Considering that all events commence with the capture phase (stage to
target), is there anyway to have just one stage listener for all events (of
any type) that kills off event propagation, then routes said event to
perhaps an event manager or function that determines the event type and what
operation is required?

If possible, would this be ideal when you know your application only has
10-15 events (either user or system generated) to account for?

I still don't completely understand the AS3 event framework and it doesn't
seem to make sense to me to have 10 or 15 listeners located throughout an
application. Not to mention the fact that, as far as I'm aware, within any
class from which you want to listen for an event, you need to have a
instance of the dispatching object, then add the listener to the same
object?

[Flashcoders] BaseUI version 2 - Flash Layout

2008-06-23 Thread Romuald Quantin
Hi everyone,

I'm happy to tell you that you can use the second version of BaseUI.

It will help you to handle the positions and sizes; it makes things easy
when you want to manage backgrounds and assets behaviors in a liquid or
fixed flash site.

In this new version, I reproduce what the Flex Builder has in his interface.
BaseUI will allow you to use properties on a DisplayObject like: top,
bottom, left, right, horizontalCenter, width and height, also with
percentage, etc...

Be able to use easily percent width and height is opening new possibilities,
I let you have a look at the demo:
http://www.soundstep.com/blog/source/baseuiv2/demo/

little explanation here:
http://www.soundstep.com/blog/2008/06/23/flash-liquid-layout-with-baseui-ver
sion-2/

the BaseUI page:
http://www.soundstep.com/blog/downloads/baseui/

This version is NOT an update, the code written for the previous version
won't work with this one.

I hope you'll enjoy it and let me know what you think about.

How can I protect a comma when I create the String? So that it is not using

I tried the ASCII code, but it is printing it straight in the CSV file. I
also tried a backslash before, no success

Subject: [Flashcoders] Gaia 2.2.0 now available

 I'd like to let everyone on the list know about the latest major release
 of my free, open-source, front-end Flash framework, Gaia.

 http://www.gaiaflashframework.com/forum/index.php/topic,542.0.html

 Gaia 2.2.0 is a major release and contains many awesome improvements and
 upgrades!

 First off, SWFObject 2 + SWFAddress 2.1 are now fully supported. Updating
 older Gaia projects will automatically convert all your html pages,
 including your SEO Scaffolding ones, all while keeping any custom params
 and FlashVars you have in the old syntax. One click and your project is
 up-to-date with the latest SWF embedding technology. It doesn't get much
 easier than that!

 Another cool new feature is queued on-demand asset loading. Gaia will now
 only open a maximum of two HTTP requests at a time, which means your Gaia
 site is more stable (developers have reported AS3 becomes unstable when
 you have too many pending HTTP requests) and more responsive.

 External pages now have a window attribute which enables you to target
 which window you want to open your link in right in the site.xml.

 The Gaia panel now has Site XML and Class Path validation so you don't
 accidentally scaffold invalid class folder names (no spaces, no number at
 the start, alphanumeric), or invalid page ids. Additionally, the panel
 tells you exactly which nodes are invalid so you don't have to waste time
 trying to determine which ones they are.

 Gaia now has AS3 Event Metadata for auto-completion when using Flex
 Builder 3.

 Separate page templates for Actionscript and Timeline are now available
 for easy customization (and to solve a nasty JSFL bug with removeFrames).

 Plus, some important bug fixes were made in both the framework and the
 panel.

 And to top it all off, the latest version of the TweenMax family (v 1.17)
 is also included.

RE: [Flashcoders] AS3: How can I target an object from adot-sytaxstring?

2008-06-12 Thread Romuald Quantin
If you fell developing it, I wrote an experiment about the flash proxy
class. I would do it that way. The proxy class makes you able to handle new
methods and properties on any other classes (especially the one that are not
dynamic, almost all of them), to access to something like:

mySprite.myNewProperty
mySprite.myNewMethod

In my example I proxy an array but you could do it for anything.

http://www.soundstep.com/blog/2008/05/27/data-access-with-array-extending-an
d-proxy-extending/

Make a search on Google with the keywords as3, proxy and dot syntax maybe
someone has already done that.

Hope it helps.

One dirty way would be like this:

var sTarget:String = first.second.third.fourth;
var aTarget:Array = sTarget.split(.);
var mcTarget = this[ aTarget[0] ];
for (var i:int = 1; i  aTarget.length; i += 1)
{
mcTarget = mcTarget[ aTarget[i] ];
}
trace( mcTarget );

 Hello, I'm being passed a string that has a reference to an object in

 I have tried to write this by turning the string into an array and
 then creating the object but I'm not sure how:

 public static function arToObj(a:Array):Object
   {
   var retObj:Object;
   for ( var i:Number=0; ia.length; i++ ) {
   if (i==a.length-1){
   //dont know what to do here !!

   };
   return retObj;
   }

 This is untested e-mail ActionScript, but you could do something like
 this:

 public static function arToObj(a:String):Object
 {
var strArray:Array;
var clsRef:Class;

strArray = a.split(.);
clsRef = getDefinitionByName(strArray[0]) as Class;
return new clsRef();
 }

 I'm sure there are bugs in there, but that's the basic approach I'd
 take.

 Cordially,

hi folks

maybe you guys can help me. I've been asked to explore how to animate a mask
to look like it's liquid.

currently the mask is amended every frame by placing a circle which looks a
little spotty. It would be nice to get a more 'airbrushed' feel to what is
being done (it's been suggested that this could be achieved using a bitmap
filter in flash)

hope you can help

RE: [Flashcoders] flex 3 Event.RESIZE

2008-06-05 Thread Romuald Quantin
This event is the right one, maybe because the stage == null when you add
the listener?

If it helps, I wrote classes to handle liquid UI based on this event:
http://www.soundstep.com/blog/downloads/baseui/

Even if you don't use it, you can probably check the code and find
something.

You might need to check the html, if your movie is not resized with the
browser, the event won't fire.

Ofcourse :)

Right now I'm working on a project that does involve a scrollbar.
What i do with the Rectangle class is i measure the handle of the
scrollbar and use it for the bounds to drag it to.
Like so:

_maxScroll = _track.height - _handler.height;
_bounds = new Rectangle( _handler.x, _handler.y, 0, _maxScroll );

And then in my function where i do the actual dragging, i do this:

_handler.startDrag( false, _bounds );

If you look at the documentation for the Rectangle Class it also says
this:

The following methods and properties use Rectangle objects:
* The bounds parameter for the startDrag() method of the Sprite class

Hope this makes sense, to me it does :)

Hi,

I have a live site where a friend of mine just sees a black page -
the Flash is written in with SWFObject, but after this nothing happens
and he sees a black screen - the movie bg colour is #00

http://www.sas.org.uk/education/sos/

This is in Win XP - Firefox 2.0.0.14 with the latest release of
Flash Player 9.0.124.0 - it also happened with an older version 9.0.45.0
(Debug), but we upgraded to try and discover the source of the problem.

The site works fine in IE on his machine and a mirror of the site on
another domain works fine in FF. All the files are local to the site,
so no cross-domain issues here.

So the question is, do any of you have the same setup as above
Win/FF 2.0.0.14 FP 8 and if you visit the URL do any of you just get a
blank screen?

Or, do any of you have any suggestions as to what to look for?

If it works, you will get TV which loads a cartoon guy, etc. etc.

Thanks in advance.

Glen.

It is hard to get a smooth linear movement anyway, because the easing is
linear you're going to see very well a break in the movement, which can
happen because of the browser, or whatever. It is probably a lot smoother in

RE: [Flashcoders] Why do you compile with the Flash IDE?

2008-05-16 Thread Romuald Quantin
I sometimes compile with the flash IDE using FDT.
I sometimes compile with the Flex SDK using FDT.
I sometimes compile with Flex Builder.

The thing is, if someone is going to use your source later, it is nice for
them to have a FLA especially if they don't know how to use Flex, Flash
Develop, FDT or whatever...

Even if I prefer stay with FDT + Flex SDK, sometimes you have to build
something very quickly for a client, build a full intro in the flash IDE
that not really requires complicated actionscript, or build a template with
a complicated design, well in my case and in term of speed, you can have all
snippets you want the Flash IDE is absolutely very quick to do things...

Also, still in term of doing something quickly, copy paste a design from
illustrator can be absolutely the quickest way to implement a design
(especially if it well done in illustrator). If you're not sure, just check
what is Thermo, you'll understand the power you can have by using an IDE (I
guess for thermo, it will be an IDE mixed between Flex and Flash?):
http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Thermo

Flex is a nice tool to produce Flex application, well it is becoming
complicated, I feel that FDT is a lot more flexible (if you don't use the
Flex WYSIWYG features obviously).

In my opinion... don't stuck yourself by using or not the Flash IDE, just
take both advantages when needed.

You can create an actionscript project in Flex, see this tutorial:

Then you can create your graphics in Flash and use them as a SWC file in
Flex Builder.

If you create your SWC in flash you can even use Flash develop or FDT with
the Flex SDK, you don't need anymore Flex Builder.

Is that your question?

 You don't need to know Flex to use the Flex SDK compiler...

 I think the name probably confuses people, because it's both a
 Flex and ActionScript compiler (correct me if I'm wrong).

 I only program in ActionScript, using Flash Develop and the SDK.
 Our compile times went from 1 minute down to 4 seconds when
 we did the change in our company...

 I think there is not so much to learn to do this move, but if the code
 is mixed all over the multiple time lines in the IDE, then there can be
 a lot of work to do separating the two.

RE: [Flashcoders] Why do you compile with the Flash IDE?

2008-05-16 Thread Romuald Quantin
I'm not sure you understood me well :)

Probably my fault.

What's true is that strong coders are moving away from Flash, and use the
Flex SDK + FDT or flash develop for example.

But when I said put a FLA file for other developers is useful for them, the
only code that is in the FLA is the name of the Main Class (entry point), I
also can't stand code in the FLA... it is just a nightmare.

So it has nothing to do with reusability and it is not even changing your
way of coding. I was just saying that if you make a source without FLA
available, if the coder behind want to update something, better for him to
be able to do it without Flash IDE, otherwise he's just stuck.

RE: [Flashcoders] Why do you compile with the Flash IDE?

2008-05-16 Thread Romuald Quantin
Just a question, what kind of projects are you doing on Linux?

I can't use linux because all the designers I'm working with are working
with the Adobe CS3 (illustrator, and so on), and I'm not able to open their
files on linux.

Is there a way now? Or do you have tips to be able to work with people using
Adobe CS3? Or do you use 2 OS?

RE: [Flashcoders] StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN

2008-05-16 Thread Romuald Quantin
If the swf size is fixed and you activate fullscreen, it should work as
expected. Sorry I don't have any source code example but I think I've done
it. But around the movie you'll get the color set for the SWF, meaning if
you want you fixed SWF sitting on a nice gradient background, I don't think
it is possible...

If I remember well, better trying to be sure.

Let us know.

is it possible to set a projector to show in fullscreen but reduce
the actual movie to, say, 80% of the total screen size?

Basically I have a projector that I've been working on but the client
has asked that rather than have the window not scale within the
screen (which I was using stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE
for), they'd like the movie to scale up to the screen size. The
problem with this is that it can be rather over-powering as it's not
really been designed for this kind of view.

So my thinking is that I'd like it to scale to about 80% of the
screen size with the rest being a neutral border

is this possible?

RE: [Flashcoders] Why do you compile with the Flash IDE?

2008-05-16 Thread Romuald Quantin
I work both on Mac and PC, I gave up compiling from Flash IDE on Mac, just
REALLY too long...

If I you want to compile on Mac but still use Flash for graphic assets, here
is what I was doing:

You have to export your FLA (containing only graphics, fonts or whatever) as
a SWC and use it compiling with the Flex SDK. I use Eclipse + FDT, I don't
know if there's something else for Mac...

I use Flash Develop (and formerly Sepy) to write all of my code, but I use
the Flash IDE to create library assets and compile swfs.

A lot of the work that I do in Flash centers around writing code to build
screens or pages created by the designers. I find that, although it's not
perfect, I use Flash's Import PSD functionality quite a bit to bring
graphics into Flash and create a library of graphic objects. I don't do
any timeline code; all of my swfs are one-frame, blank stage affairs with
everything built in classes as it should be. But I have found that
recreating the screens in the Flash IDE helps provide a frame of reference
for x y positioning etc when I'm attaching graphics to the stage in my
code.

That being said, I am also interested in moving to a work flow that doesn't
require the Flash IDE as much -- and even posted a question to the list
asking how others are handling this.

Anecdotally, those of you that are seeing very long compile times in the
Flash IDE, are you on mac or pc? I work on both and find that the mac
generally takes 4 times as long to compile a swf at a minimum.

RE: [Flashcoders] StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN

2008-05-16 Thread Romuald Quantin
I guess it is, I enclosed a quick try (open the FLA and shift + F12 to get
the EXE).

Here is the code:

stage.displayState = StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
mc.x = stage.stageWidth * .5;
mc.y = stage.stageHeight * .5;
mc.width = stage.stageWidth * .8;
mc.height = stage.stageHeight * .8;

your movie is scaled to 80% of the screen, be careful as if you leave the
fullscreen mode, it is not working anymore, you'll need to test the state
and apply other settings in case the user is not in fullscreen anymore.

the mc is your content, centered in my try... if you don't want you main
centered as I did, I think you'll have to test the user resolution:
http://www.webzo.org/tutorials/flash/user-resolution-detection.php
and then calculate the 20% gap in pixels to change the width, height, x, y
of your content.

Well, just a hint but it might possible, I hope it helps.

I'd like the movie to scale to about 80% of the screen size rather

Yes working but it will always return null in the flash IDE

See the file enclosed, open it, shift F + 12, open the EXE file and press
echap to see I update a textField with the display state.

Or if you have the SWC downloadable you can just copy the file near the FLA
file, flash will load it automatically.

YUP :)

An swc file is notthing more than a zip file. So when you rename it to
zip you can extract it, probably there is a library.swf in there.
This is what you do is this you load it in in Flash like this:

import flash.display.Loader;
//
var ClassFileForHoldingGooglesAPIClass:Class;
// Create these for everyclass you want to extract.
//
function loadAssets():void
{
var assetLoader:Loader = new Loader();
assetLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,
assetLoaderComplete);
assetLoader.load(new URLRequest(library.swf));
}

When the library.swf is done loading it calls the assetLoaderComplete
handler that handles the
request and utilizes the getDefinition() method to get the class
definition by a string.

function assetLoaderComplete(evt:Event):void
{
// remove your listener
evt.target.removeEventListener(Event.COMPLETE, assetLoaderComplete);
var appDomain:ApplicationDomain = evt.target.applicationDomain;

ClassFileForHoldingGooglesAPIClass =
appDomain.getDefinition(com.google.maps.api.Whatever) as Class;
}

Now can create and instance of the MyOwnButton, simply by calling:

var myNewObject:Class = new ClassFileForHoldingGooglesAPIClass();

Or call functions on the ClassFileForHoldingGooglesAPIClass.

Hope this is what you mean.

Cheers,

Sidney
