explicit hooks to detect blinks so may have to be further developed

The main source of code seems to be an OpenCV(

[Flashcoders] anyone heard of spongecell?

hey all

i've been asked about a company on madison ave in new york called
spongecell (http://spongecell.com/) who say they can get rich media style
banners in standard placements (the bit that my pm is interested in is the
video banners, the example of which was an amex banner at
http://spongecell.com/placements/48618216/test) which are much cheaper and
more widespread than rich placements.

I've taken apart one of their ads and it seems like they have a polite
loader with a normal rich media in-page build (looks like they use a
bespoke as3 framework) so I wasn't sure if they were able to do this with
some kind of tech sleight of hand or simply by being a fairly obscure
platform

the award links on their homepage are dead links which is wierd

so i guess my question is, has anyone heard of these guys and are they
worth looking at?

we've been given a brief to design / develop several games for kids (6-12)
with special needs and i thought maybe some of you have had some experience
with this kind of development?

are there any tips that you can give me as i start researching this or maybe
point me in the direction of any resources that were useful to you please?

was: flashdevelop flash player 11) and there's a few 'how to set up to use x
3d engine and flash player 11) type posts out there which will help

note: i think there is a wierd little caveat that stage3d requires wmode:
direct and can't be tested from within flash (so should be tested in a
browser) - that may only be alternativa3d which i was checking out but be
aware of it

[Flashcoders] does akamai multiplayer stream mp3s?

can the AkamaiMultiPlayer class be used with mp3s? The documentation and a
browse through the code seems to indicate that it does but does anyone here

[Flashcoders] Using BitmapData.draw() with masked items

hey folks

I'm having an issue with BitmapData.draw(). If i try to use it on a masked
item, i get strange results (usually nothing). If i unmask the item first, i
get a result as expected but obviously no mask.

Is there any way to do both? I'm thinking I'll have to loop through all of
the pixels in the mask and the image and use copyPixels() for each one that
falls under the mask colour but that seems VERY processor intensive.

any ideas?

henrik got it - i stored a reference to the item, it's parent and it's mask
and pulled them into another sprite and grabbed that - worked a treat

sounds like you need to use 2 bitmaps drawn with copypixels and a clipping
rectangle to capture the correct half and scale the bottom half with

hey folks

i'm trying to get some objects to move along a sine curve on the z axis but
i'm having a bit of trouble with the rotationY - i'd like the objects to
align along the path so they're always facing 90 degress to the direction
they're travelling but they seem to want to keep rotating in circles

(note file is 800 x 600)

Usually to center a clip, I would use the following :
clip.x = Stage.width / 2 - clip.width / 2;
clip.y = Stage.height / 2 - clip.height / 2;

Other than that I would start looking at how you're scoping your code by
using trace(this) within your functions to see if you're scoped to the same
place as the item you're trying to move

[Flashcoders] What is up with adobes documentation?

Hey folks

Every time I do a big search I seem to get a LOT of as2 links and when I add
as3 into the search terms I keep getting links to either a page offering up
a bunch of generic documentation pages (ie not direct links to the class I'm
looking for) or I get class documentation pages that are only half full.
Seriously do a search on the livedocs site for the  flvplayback class, its
shocking especially in light of the fact that there is no longer any local
docs installed with the software any more

What is going on with this? With people (rightly or wrongly) bashing flash
in favour of the yet untried html5 spec, adobe can ill afford this kind of
crap support for the flash platform.

Hi guys

I'm trying to use the Facebook Actionscript graph api but I seem to be
having problems in IE (other browsers like chrome and firefox seem okay so
far).

From what i can tell, it's logging in fine and returning the user id but
when i do a lookup on that user with Facebook.api(_user, handleUserRequest);
I get an error.

Is there any known problems with the Facebook Actionscript graph api that
affects IE only?

for loading assets, I would look at LoaderMax (especially if you've ever had
any experience with tweenlite or tweenmax as it's written by the same guys)

if you're also after a full blown framework, a lot of people recommend
either robotlegs or puremvc so i'd receommend looking at these (although
using frameworks of this nature is quite advanced)

returned by the Facebook.ui(apprequests, ) dialogue?

I've tried the following:

Facebook.ui(apprequests, { message:select some friends },
handleAppRequest, iframe);

which allows the selection of friends to tell about the app. I then do the
following:

private function handleAppRequest(result:Object):void
{
 for (var i:int = 0; i  result.request_ids.length; i++)
 {
 var requestID:String = result.request_ids[i];
 Facebook.api(/ + requestID, handleRequestFriends);
 }
}

to select the friends returned in the result object (which I think might be
where I'm going wrong - i don't think that request_ids == facebook user
ids), and then this returns a fail:

private function handleRequestFriends(success:Object, fail:Object):void
{
 if (success) trace(success);
 else trace(fail);
}

i am currently working on a large as3 project that will require quite
extensive localization and we're looking at using xliff as the standard to
make this simple.

If i was using the flash IDE, i'd use the strings panel to simplify this
down nicely but as i'm using flashdevelop, i can't seem to find any way of
embedding the locale class into my library for use in fd

should i be obsessing about using this class / method or should i just use
Capabilities.language to grab the correct xml file and use it as normal?
What kind of systems have you used in the past to do localization?

  Adobe didn't do the existing Flash authors any favors by leaning into
 non-time-line Flash with Flex as the preferred authoring environment either.
  They could have brought all those time-line guys into the fold by offering
 time-line to straight code conversion as a feature of the formerly main
 authoring tool and taught all those folks what a correct straight to code
 translation should look like...  they didn't, unless i missed something.

  Then there was the brilliant move of not killing off movie clips that were
 no longer in/on the time-line for several iterations of the player - how did
 that happen?!

  Fact of the matter is, there were cooler inventions/apps when the coding
 environment and player were  simpler.  The older apps ran more smoothly on
 lesser equipment and were more compact and quicker to deliver.

  Feature creep overwhelmed what used to be a stimulating and rewarding
 creative experience.

  Can Flash be fixed?  Maybe.  I tried an old app in the newest player the
 other day and it ran better than it has in years, must be the new hardware
 acceleration - that's a good sign.

shouldn't be a problem afaik. The only issues you will run into will be
security sandbox stuff which you'll need to set on the domain that the form
script resides on. I would speak to google about resolving security issues
on the banner itself

[Flashcoders] Facebook API implementations

hey guys

i have a couple of questions regarding using the facebook api that i'd like
cleared up if possible.

We're looking at settling on a set of classes to work with the facebook api.
We've previously used the set up detailed in
http://www.blog.elimak.com/2010/08/simple-connection-flashfacebook-using-the-new-graph-api/
and
it's worked fine, although there are a couple of hacks needed to get it
working locally (you need to log in and retrieve the token from the POST
variables using Firebug to be able to test it).

However, a bit of Googling around has shown that Adobe has it's own
implementation (http://code.google.com/p/facebook-actionscript-api/) for
facebook which i guess we have to assume will be kept more up to date if
facebook changes their api (which almost *never *happens [/sarcasm]). That
said, they seem to have swcs for desktop, mobile and web deployment and you
can't test the web version locally so we'd have to put the files on an
external server for testing (which is doable but a little time consuming
over the course of a project) or use the desktop (air) version for testing
and hope the web version works the same way (which sounds fraught)

I guess what I'm asking is, have you used the adobe implementation and if
so, what are the gotcha for using it please? Or would you recommend sticking
with the yoz.sk implementation as we've used it before. There seems to be a
lot of confusion on the intertubes so I thought I might get a more concise
set of opinions here.

the xml that is being loaded is dynamically generated so we're going to try
turning the filesize auditing off to see if that fixes the problem - we're
also going to change the http headers on the dynamic file to output a proper
filesize.

It seemed to occur in a specific combination (swfobject and firefox).

I'll get back to you - if there is an actual bug / fix, i'll file it on your
site

i'm in a studio that has been looking at various frameworks and have settled
on pureMVC due to the large preinstalled userbase (i would have preferred to
go straight to robotlegs but i guess that using puremvc will give me some
history with mvc implementations other than my own)

i'm setting up a site to use swfaddress and i have a question regarding
using a separate proxy for it

i load my data / layouts from an xml file and i want to be able to loop
through it when i receive a swfaddress event to check for the layout to use.
I've currently set up swfaddress to use a separate proxy from the xml, which
resides in a data proxy. Is there any way of allowing the swfaddress proxy

Hey jason

I think you're falling foul of the way that flvplayback creates new Video
objects every time you add a new stream without destroying the previous
streams.

You also cannot kill your last one if you only have one left which I think
causes issues like yours but I think you can use numvideos or something
similar to loop through the existing video objects to close their streams.

Sorry but i'm on my phone so googling around is painful but you should be
able to get something from this.

i've also found problems if you don't use the actual names (which can be
viewed in the flash ide) for the font (which can be the same as long as the
weights are different and matching the names in )

here is a sample from a font embed class that i used on a recent project

note: the fontName for the regular and the bold are the same but the bold
version also has a fontWeight - i used the names for the fonts found in the
flash ide for each of the fontNames. Also, if these fonts are embedded in a
textfield in the flash ide and included with this use, they will cancel each
other out (like glen said, above)

i was always under the impression that the best way of doing that (for games
sprite animations for instance) is bitmap 'blitting' where you use a
tilesheet and then use bitmap draw to pull the current frame you want to
show into your actual sprite

how does cs5 generate files for iphone? Does it create a swf and then use a
cocoa framework to make it work or does it transcode the file directly into

also, swift 3d is a modeller - it may have some interesting export settings
but unless it uses a 3d engine in flash (i believe jason said that it
exports to papervision), you get no interactivity for your money

 there will be continued development - though the price may rise (too high?)

i think they use a freemium model - free for web deployment but ever
increasing costs for extra functionality / deployment platforms - that said,
being able to deploy the same code to the web, iPhone / android and 360 /
ps3 / wii is probably worth the cost to some dev houses

[Flashcoders] [worked around] flvplayback fullscreen button

controls) with standard netstream / netconnection / video players and it
solved the problem. Not really sure what was happening but i suppose that
all of the flvplayback instances were trying to go fullscreen

i've just found out what the problem was

i've reverted to my previous version of the cut down players (that use the
flvplayback component) and set fullscreentakeover to false (as it is in the
main player) and it fixed the problem - apparently when the fullscreen state
is called, all of the flvplayback instances will try to react to it in their
own way and if they are set to take over the screen, they will fight the
player we actually want to use if it doesn't.

no that's correct but id should be declared outside of your loop - as3 will
actually give you a duplicate variable error for putting it inside the loop.

you can also refer to your iterator (i) after the loop is done

i'd rewrite your function like this

i'm having a really wierd error when i hit the fullscreen button for my

after a quick glance i'd recommend a couple of things:

see if you can break your application into smaller chunks that interact with
each other rather than have a single class - one of the benefits of oop is
being able to visualise the problem as distinct tasks that are handled by
separate objects (classes)

second is just naming conventions - generally only classes should start with
a capital letter - instances (like CityList and PhotoArray) should be camel
case (cityList and photoArray). My own personal preference is to prefix with
the object type (listCities and arPhotos), much like hungarian notation but
there's discussion about how relevant that is in these days of proper coding
environments with automatic code completion (like FlashDevelop and FDT).

It's also considered good form for method names to be verbs (getVariable(),
handleEvent(), completeSetup()) although many people like to make their
event handlers follow the form onEnterFrame() / onMouseEvent() (i use
handleEventname() for mine)

You should try to give values to your class variables in the constructor /
init method or when they're needed if possible. An instance of
myCloseBtn:Button that is added when the variable is declared and then is
never used is memory / cpu wasted

i'll be looking through the code a bit closer when i get a chance - i'm sure
there's others here who will comment as well

another note on naming convention

it's fairly normal to mark private class variables out in some way (usually
an underscore before the name (private var _myVar:String;) and leave public
variables / getters/setters without - this will give you more options for
your variable names (within methods, for instance) and will help you work
out whether a variable is available outside the class at a glance

[Flashcoders] FLVPlaybackCaptioning - nicer transitions?

hey guys

hopefully this is just a quickie for the right guy - i am using
the FLVPlaybackCaptioning component to provide subtitles for my video but
i'd like it to fade in / out.

i've tried using the CaptionChangeEvent .added accessor but unfortunately
that is fired when the component removes the text from the field so i can't
then fade it out (!)

is there something else i could be doing ?

to do any kind of rotation / alpha transforms on a textfield, you need to
have the fonts embedded in the textfield

(note the font should be embedded in the swf somehow - the simplest method
is to have a textfield off-stage with all the characters you want embedded

Out of interest try it with a different font - I've had all sorts of
problems embedding Arial in the past

[Flashcoders] physics engines - which do you recommend?

hi guys

bit of a high level / preference question really - we've been tasked with
finding a physics engine and i was wondering which ones you guys prefer?
Which are compatible with other tech (like 3d), which are the most flexible
and which are the simplest?

the ones we're looking at (but certainly not limited to) are APE, Fisix and
Box2d.

i usually use a Video class with a netstream object to show video but i've
been trying to implement the (supposedly) simpler flvplayback component
because of the extra functionality that it provides (like variable streams
and metadata cuepoints in f4vs)

however

i'm trying to add a standard seekbar component and it just doesn't seem to
be working - it's appearing and the video and all other controls are working
but with no handle and no seekbar updates - i have the feeling that i'm
missing something obvious but i can't see what it is and Google is not my
friend right now - could you take a look at what i'm doing please?

here is my implementation:

if you want to search for a list of nodes that have a common attribute it's
like this:

i believe you can get a complete list of a nodes elements by using a *

although if you just want a list of children you can use .children()

there's also the descendent accessor which will return a list of
all descendents regardless of parent

i think that textfields treat returns (\n or \r) in what it expects to be
html text as whitespace

i'd recommend wrapping any html in ![CDATA[ ]] and just inserting them
wholesale rather than getting them as children of a node

so
thexml
 mynode![CDATA[pThis is a test. emDo not adjust your
set/em./ppMy second paragraph/p]]/mynode
/thexml

which can be brought into a textfield like this

myText.htmlText = xml.mynode;
