Re: [Flashcoders] Re: AMFPHP for commercial projects

yeah that quote was from probably the very first apeparance of amfphp
way back when. There was also a quote somewhere (it used to be a link
on the old amfphp.org site, but its not there anymore) saying
somethign to that effect that macromedia 'was aware' about it but had
no plans to do anything about it.

Also, I've heard of way more instances of people having issues trying
to work with CF Remoting than with amfphp...espeically in these
latest releases up to including 1.0, where Patrick Mineault
(http://www.5etdemi.com/blog/) kicked a lot of ass reworkign and
speeding up, and clearing up a lot of the formerly annoying issues.

I've used it on a number of production sites and have never had an
issue of it taking a crap on me, not even from the first early
releases.

I think Adobe (still not happy writing that) are happy with the legal
ambiguity They don't come off as oppressing the little guy, but
equally not many large commercial projects will take the risk of going
down the amfphp route .

Because they have a capable competing language, ColdFusion. It would
be like bringing a product to market and then releasing a free version
of the same thing.

I'm curious why Macromedia (oops, adobe) don't pick up PHP as a remoting
technology. It's a huge audience and they support PHP in their other
products (ie. dreamweaver).

But exactly what *is* the legal issue? That AMFPHP reverse-engineered Flash
Remoting's binary file format?

The MacroMedia web site has a tutorial on using it:
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flash/articles/amfphp.html . I wouldn't
think they're t erribly concerned, making the plumbing available encourages
more use of Flash with a variety of back ends.

Personally I love AMFPHP and have never observed it blowing up; it's
far faster than ColdFusion remoting in my experience. Legal issues
aside, I'd go with it for enterprise-scale projects.
