It changed names, and then came back to SWFobject. 2.0 is in beta now.

There was -- both SWFObject and UFO got merged into a project named
SWFFix. Then SWFFix got renamed back to SWFObject. So yes, SWFObject is
still the preferred method, and there's a beta of the new version going
on.

If you're already using a javascript framework check for swf support.
Mootools has this in the upcoming release:

http://svn.mootools.net/trunk/Source/Swiff/Swiff.js

No sense in using swfobject if your framework has it built in.

I am still using swfobject for lack of finding a better solution... I'm
anxious to hear anyone else's thoughts as well...

I think SWFObject is the latest - correct me if I'm wrong though. The
project moved to OSFlash.org (http://osflash.org/swfobject), but
other than that, I don't think it's changed significantly recently.

The creators of swfobject and ufo have teamed up with Michael Williams to
create the new swfobject (formerly swffix).

I personally have been using UFO more than swfobject lately. I haven't
looked at the new project yet.

I actually prefer to roll my own - I don't need to do any player version
detection in my organization (everyone is using the same player) - I
just need to embed it the right way - the Javascript to do it is super
easy.
