The setValue method of the headerRenderer is going to be passed the text it wants to display for the column.  You can use that to set the toolTip property as well.

Subject: [flexcoders] HeaderRenderer Tooltips

I have about 21 columns in my datagrid and I want to be able to write
one header renderer that will have a tooltip for each particular
column. Is there a way to write a single header renderer to popup a
different tooltip based on the columnname?

Looking at Macromedia's example, I'm not really sure how to proceed. It
seems like you have to write one headerRenderer per column. Thanks.
