[flexcoders] TextInput
Hi to all, stupid question mx:TextInput id=tdsc width=100% text= enabled=false keyDown=if (Key.isDown(113)) Elenco_Misure(Misure)/ i wish that TextInput is disable or readOnly but i can't fire keyDown event, there's a method to do, i think if there is a readOnly property this would work. Re: [flexcoders] Flex 1.5 price [Macromedia Italy tech]
It's true Sjors, it's a strange Macromedia Conversion! but it will be difficult to find clients prepared to spend 2, with already 14000 they open wide me the eyes , despite the final product is of good impact. However I don't think that Macromedia will lower the costs, to the last Italy Macromedia Tech, has confirmed the prices and besides they wants to hold Macromedia Flex as Enterprise produced, in few words if we want a beautiful product it needs to pay it. But in many italy real case will be extremely difficult to find new or old customers (not only small firms but averages firms also) prepared to spend, especially in this Italy economical bad moment. [flexcoders] IF flex_price 12k usd THEN should_I_consider_to_Buy = undefined
Hello flexcoders, I've been evaluating this product for about 2 months for now... I'm not a Flash/Flex developer and the learning curve of the AS2 principles in addition to the Flex framework was quite steep. I managed to develop my first application and many thanks for the flexcoders user groups but can't say I'm very impressed by this product. It's true Flex has his merits, nice interfaces, large library of components, but I have my doubts about this products and here are some of them: 1. Too expensive. Cannot justify adding such a big price on top of the current hardware/software arhitecture. JRun+Flex don't think is a good option, and after my experience with JRun's memory leaking working with Flex I have a deja vu feeling... The library is not open source and many times you have to GO WISH to get a fix and with each fix you might fear that the new release will be more expensive not cool. 2. Not very sure this product is ready for a full blown production application. It's very nice for data retrieval application type, not as good for data entry apps; 3. The final product depends too much of the Flash Player ( an extra layer of possibles problems - especially memory leaking ). I've seen that sometimes under high load my browser crashes without any reason In conclusion, I've seen this movie a while back at SUN. SUN developed a nice web framework, SUN ONE (Jato) and at the beginning was open source and free:)) People like it, adopt it very well and then SUN introduced a license fee in addition to not releasing the source code Can you guess the result? Many people dropped the product and agreed that Sun ONE ( Jato ) is a great web framework, but considered that Struts is a better alternative Too bad So, in case the price rises then my company will drop Flex as a UI candidate and we'll go back to JSF, Struts, tiles, open source components just my 0.02$ Regards, Michael Yahoo! RE: [flexcoders] Comboboxes in datagrid
Hi, I usually subclass the DataGridColumn class to customize the assigned cell renderer. This way you can easily pass extra information (in your case the dataprovider for the combo boxes) directly to the column. The cellrenderer then asks its row for the dataprovider to use: mx:DataGrid ... mx:columns my:ExtendedDataGridColumn cellRenderer=ComboRenderer dataProvider={arr1}/ my:ExtendedDataGridColumn cellRenderer=ComboRenderer dataProvider={arr2}/ my:ExtendedDataGridColumn cellRenderer=ComboRenderer dataProvider={arr3}/ /mx:columns /mx:DataGrid ExtendedDataGridColumn just extends the mx.controls.gridclasses.DataGridColumn class and adds a public variable dataProvider. Inside the cellRenderer class ComboRenderer (which you could implement as a direct subclass of mx.controls.ComboBox) you can then access the correct dataProvider by doing this function init():Void { super.init(); dataProvider = listOwner.getColumnAt(getCellIndex().columnIndex); } Dirk. -Original Message- From: Tom Fitzpatrick [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 5:23 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] Comboboxes in datagrid I'm trying to create a datagrid that holds three-column rows with a comboBox in each cell. I assume I have to use a cellrenderer to accomplish this - is this correct? I've been experimenting with cellrenderer examples on the rich internet apps site (Webster/McLeod) and one posted by Dirk Eismann. Both these assume only one comboBox per row, and I haven't found a way to add three per row, each with a different dataProvider. So close, yet so far. Any tips (or code to share)? - Tom Yahoo! RE: [flexcoders] How to pass AS Objects to a CFC
You can also implement mapping like this = 1. AS VO -- Class TestVO { public var test1 : String; public var test2 : Array; function TestVO () { Object.registerClass ( testVO, TestVO ); } } testVO = new TestVO(); remoteObject.passToCF ( testVO ); = 2. CF -- cffunction name=getASObject returntype=any access=remote cfargument name=testVO type=struct required=yes cfset var _asVO = arguments.testVO.getType() cfset var _cfVO = CreateObject( component, _asVO ) cfset _cfVO[test1] = arguments.testVO[test1] cfset _cfVO[test2] = arguments.testVO[test2] /cffunction cffunction name=passASObject returntype=struct access=remote cfargument name=cfVO type=TestVO required=yes cfset var _asVO = CreateObject( java, flashgateway.io.ASObject ).init() cfset _asVO.setType( testVO ) cfset _asVO[test1] = arguments.cfVO[test1] cfset _asVO[test2] = arguments.cfVO[test2] cfreturn _asVO /cffunction === 3. AS receiving the VO from CF -- public / private var testVO : TestVO; testVO = event.result; == That should get you going. You might wanna make this mapping a process, which your service layer invokes before getting Vos into and out of your backend. You can make it so that you define variables of your CF VO as properties and loop over the properties to auto populate the AS VO going out and the same when you read the AS VO. You might also wanna look into Tartan, which has this mapping built into it and offers seemless integration. Let me know if you have any questions. I am glad it worked Mohanraj. There's one more way of doing it without having to specify the other argument. var testObject = new Array(); // it has to be an array. It won't work if you did new Object() testObject[var1] = var1; testObject[var2] = var2 remoteObject.cfFunction ( testObject ); cffunction name=cfFunction access=remote cfargument name=testObject type=struct /cffunction It works in Flash. Haven't tried it on Flex but shouldn't have any problems. It is simple if all you want to pass is an object with some properties instead of sending over a class. -Original Message- From: Peter Farland [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, March 25, 2005 11:25 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [flexcoders] How to pass AS Objects to a CFC The history of this problem stems way back from Flash Remoting in ColdFusion 6.0. ActionScript 1.0 APIs for Flash Remoting introduced named arguments for CF-based invocation. The syntax for passing named arguments was usually listed like this in documentation: myCFService.cfFunction({var1:foo,var2:bar}); Which was intended to match a CFC API: cffunction name=cfFunction access=remote cfargument name=var1 cfargument name=var2 /cffunction The {} syntax, however, really just means an untyped Object, so this invocation information is lost once it is serialized over AMF. But AMF isn't the real issue - the Flash Remoting gateway can't adapt accordinly as it can't get the necessary CFC API or argument type information from the CFC function before invoking it (a limitation in CF), so now it has a problem - how would it know that you're passing a single struct or named arguments? To disambiguate you use either of the two approaches that Mehdi described.

Re: [flexcoders] IF flex_price 12k usd THEN should_I_consider_to_Buy = undefined
Heya, This raises a good question as to what FLEX is really meant to do. In that, you've stated that you've experienced memory leaks and so forth, and i must admit if i load too much into the one screen stack, i too will see some CPU climb - but thats easily fixed by removing un-needed containers/controls (ie its no use having a mini virtual OS within a browser) along with varies data/memory management techniques applied (de-reference variables when finished, page breaking data etc). FLASH Player by its very nature has a limited amount of memory budget to play with and if you want to store 80,000 rows of data inside a DataGrid then yeah memory will hike. In reality though most folk will only use the top 100 at the very most on any search criteria - unless they are doing some crazy MS Excel type situation. Anyway the point i'm trying to make is that if the price does increase, and peoples expectations of what FLEX should DO vs what its capable of DOING (ie even if you compared FLEX App against a .NET Windows Form / JAVA SWING style app in terms of performance, you have to agree that FLEX will look poor (performance wise) on that regard. Yet in development costs and accessing it via the web, it kind of doesn't seem that bad - especially in file sizes. This is where I personally found it a point of contentation in that, as soon as i mentioned its capabilities of emulating thickware clients via browser, straightaway people i've pitched it to in the past have gone on the comparisons route - neglecting the keyword being, emulation. To me, FLEX is like buying VW BUG (Car), and stripping its panels/visuals away and putting porsche replacements in its place.. it looks and in many ways can sound like a porsche, but its no porsche its a VW made to look like one. (I recently saw a car do this very thing and you'd swear you were looking at a porsche..until it was started). Analogy was probably weak Price wise, maybe Michael is right, maybe that for $15k per CPU it HAS to go toe to toe with a thickware client aswell as maintain a smaller payload in terms of bandwidth consumption. [flexcoders] responding to a custom event - help requested
Hey all, i've got a situation that I don't think i'm handling correctly... situation: I have a main application that contains a datagrid. I create a popup to handle editing and when the edit has gone through, i want to refresh the main datagrid. I'm trying to do this through an event (is that the right way to do it?). Code - calling the event from the main window: instwin = mx.managers.PopUpManager.createPopUp(this,RecWin,false,initObj); instwin.addEventListener(recAdded, refreshRecs); On the popup side.. i have all of the editing code... where i have the form etc, then i submit it for editing (this all works)... but then when i get done with the edit/add i run this function that dispatches the event... function processUpdate(result:Object):Void { if (result.isError == 'false') { textLabel = update was Successful; dispatchEvent({type:'recAdded'}); //this.deletePopUp(); } else { textLabel = result.msg; } } In the main app, i try to chatch it with this function.. function refreshRecs(event) { getNewHardware(arrStatusFilter[statusSearch.selectedIndex].VAL,'','',''); } the getNewHardware is a function that runs the processing of the new recordset... it works as well (i use it in another part) my best guess is that I'm not catching the event correctly... anybody know what I'm doing wrong? Re: [flexcoders] IF flex_price 12k usd THEN should_I_consider_to_Buy = undefined
I have never had good luck with cold fusion and its memory management. Especially with com objects. I have a couple of known bugs that were opened and have resolved much of this by shipping COM work to .net and using MX's webservices to access it, and in some cases having the entire COM object rewritten into java. I would expect being built by the same folks and still being a fairly early version, there is not much hope of really great memory management. If we say that memory leaks are the result of sloppy coding or incomplete debugging, then the more expensive the product the less of those type of error I expect to see, and I certainly expect a faster than 3 month turn for a hot fix. -Original Message- From: Scott Barnes [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 09:11:21 To:flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [flexcoders] IF flex_price 12k usd THEN should_I_consider_to_Buy = undefined Heya, This raises a good question as to what FLEX is really meant to do. Hi, It should work without having to convert into to the AS2 type class as you did. If you simply do: results[0].price results[1].price this should get you the price of the first product and seconds products. I assumed "results" is the name of the object that contains the results of the RO call. Jimmy Gianninas Software Developer - Optimal Payments Inc. From: Kristopher Schultz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, March 28, 2005 12:49 PMTo: flexcoders@yahoogroups.comSubject: RE: [flexcoders] Security Sandbox Violation when loading image Well, I figured out why I was experiencing different behavior when pulling data in from an XML file vs. pulling it in via a remote object. My remote object method call was returning an Array of objects which on the Java side were instances of a simple data object class I had created called com.myclient.Product. These objects had three properties: label(String), imageId(String), and price(Double) which were accessible through appropriately named getter methods. When stepping through the debugger in Flex Builder, I could see these objects were coming through just fine with the appropriate property names and values, but when I tried to pass each object to my custom display component it was not displaying them, even when the same display component had no problem displaying similar data Objects if they were created in the AS code. So I went ahead and created an .as class called com.myclient.myapp.Product and associated it with the Java class using the following static variable invocation: static var regClass = Object.registerClass("com.myclient.Product", com.myclient.myapp.Product); After doing that, everything worked just fine. So my questions are, why did I have to create that ActionScript class to get things to work? Is there a way to pass back a generic AS Object from a remote object call? Would passing back objects of type java.util.Map be the answer? Which is the better practice, passing back a java.util.Map to be converted to an untyped Object or creating .as classes for each typed Object that can be retured from a remote object call. However, if my image paths come in as a result of a remote object call, I get the same errors and my images DON'T load successfully. I've double checked the exact path's that are being used in both situations by tracing out the path immediately before it is used as the value for the "source" property of the mx:Image tag and it is EXACTLY the same in both cases. Obviously the group is getting instantiated, because the tree nodes have labels... Any reason why this shouldn't work? I'm new to Flex, and AS, but this seems like it should work. Below is the code I use to fill my tree... var treeDP; public function initGroupTree() { user = mx.core.Application.application.user; var topGroups:Array = user.organization.onlyTopSuperGroups; treeDP = new TreeNode(); for(var i in topGroups) { var group:Group = topGroups[i]; var node = treeDP.addTreeNode(group.name, group); addSubGroupsToTree(node, group); } groupTree.dataProvider = treeDP; } private function addSubGroupsToTree(node, group:Group):Void { var subGroups:Array = group.subGroups; for(var i in subGroups) { var group:Group = subGroups[i]; var subNode = node.addTreeNode(group.name, group); addSubGroupsToTree(subNode, group); } } Yahoo! RE: [flexcoders] Security Sandbox Violation when loading image
You shouldnt have had to create an AS class, Im not sure why it wouldnt have worked. The regular object should have had the data you needed. Best practice is to create the class though. Matt From: Kristopher Schultz [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, March 28, 2005 9:49 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: RE: [flexcoders] Security Sandbox Violation when loading image Well, I figured out why I was experiencing different behavior when pulling data in from an XML file vs. pulling it in via a remote object. So I went ahead and created an .as class called com.myclient.myapp.Product and associated it with the Java class using the following static variable invocation: static var regClass = Object.registerClass(com.myclient.Product, com.myclient.myapp.Product); After doing that, everything worked just fine. Kris -- Kristopher Schultz Developer Resource Interactive p: 614.410.2123 www.resource.com The weird thing I've discovered is that if my image paths are brought into my Flex app via an XML file, then I do get the errors above, but the images do load successfully. However, if my image paths come in as a result of a remote object call, I get the same errors and my images DON'T load successfully. I've double checked the exact path's that are being used in both situations by tracing out the path immediately before it is used as the value for the source property of the mx:Image tag and it is EXACTLY the same in both cases. RE: [flexcoders] Validator-requiredFieldError
Flex 1.x doesnt allow databinding into validators. Its something we hope to address in the next version. Matt From: Christoph Guse [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2005 4:38 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] Validator-requiredFieldError Hi List, I'm doing some work with validators and I found the property requiredFieldError. With this property I can set a custom text to be displayed instead of The field is required. When I put a static text in this property like requiredFieldError=you should fill in a name everything works fine. But it would be even nicer if I could fill this property by databinding, i.e.: var myError=you should fill in a name; requiredFieldError={myError}... With this it should be easy to have all errors somewhere central, for instance in a XML file. But the databinding doesn't work. Do you have an idea why? RE: [flexcoders] Rowheight
I think youd need a cell renderer in that row to grow based on some property of the item. Then when the cell renderer sees that property change it changes height (and when the item for that cell is re-assigned it goes back to normal).
