[flexcoders] Question about Flex Builder 1.5 and trial ending

2005-04-28 Thread nostra72

About 60 days ago I downloaded Flex Builder 1.5 and the 60 days is up. I was under the conclusion that after the 60 days were up it would convert to an IP limitedversion. However when I try to start it I get a message that I must activate it with a serial number. How do I continue to use the software if it never expires?

[flexcoders] context-sensitive help

2005-04-28 Thread ssudha2
Are features for context-sensitive help available in Flex out-of-box?
That is, apart from tool-tip, can I invoke a help window for each field
on click of F1.

Should this be implemented programmatically or features are already
available in Flex?

Thanks

[flexcoders] Re: SWC generates server error

2005-04-28 Thread eerkmans
Thanks! About the flex classes: I already pasted the flex classes
(from the file flexforflash.zip) into my flash first run directory.
Do I understand correctly that this isn't enough?

Also, my SWC component is actually quite complex, it's a map
application with all kinds of graphic and animation effects, and
uses a lot of AS. (no it's not a flash intro ;-) I especially like
the idea that you can still use flash to build standalone mini-
applications for use in flex.

How would I go about converting my flash AS to flex, and exporting
and then using all the assets in an SWC?

thanks a lot,

erik.

 I think someone else already posted the answer. The Flash version
of
 the framework classes are different than the Flex version. You
need to
 register the Flex version of the classes into Flash (this is
 complicated, but see the docs, they're pretty extensive on this).

 All SWCs in your libpath (which includes your app directory, by
default)
 are merged together and resolved by versioning. (If you unzip the
SWC
 and look at the catalog.xml file, you can see the version numbers
on
 each definition). If there is a Flash class with a higher version
than
 the Flex class with the same name, you will get the behavior you
 describe.

 Best practices is actually to not build the components in Flash,
but
 rather to just build the assets in Flash and export them in a SWC.
 Then, build the components in Flex and attach the assets to your
Flex
 components using Embed.

  great, thanks a lot ! the error is fixed now.

  Not many people work with SWC components it seems, so if you
don't
  mind I'm asking you this other question that I havedo you
happen
  to know why my SWC's screw up my flex interface? I've posted
this
  problem as well:

  When I place my SWC file in a custom folder instead of right
next to
  my index.mxml, somehow all kinds of flex properties get
overwritten
  by the SWC. (also the case with the flex button that generated
  the 'name' error)

  For example, I can't use the property 'backgroundcolor' anywhere
in
  my entire flex app anymore, and borders around containers aren't
  shown anymore.

  Also, comboboxes get rendered with strange squares around their
round
  corners.

   Wow, that's a pretty obscure problem. I wrote the code, and
even
  I had
   to go dig through the code to see what its doing!

   This only gets triggered if the exporter sees an unnamed
sprite
  with
   init actions (are you using #initclip?)

   It temporarily gives the sprite an export name (code
dependencies
  are
   tracked based on names, so we give the unnamed sprite a unique
  handle),
   and then on export it warns you that its stripping out that
name.
  The
   problem with unnamed sprites is that they don't work with the
  normal SWC
   versioning system - if you exported two copies of that SWC and
  copied
   them both to your libpath, it wouldn't be able to determine
which
  was
   the newer version of your symbol, so it would end up including
  both.

   Coming up with a coherent message to print given that the
thing its
   complaining about is an unnamed critter deep in the bowels of
a big
   opaque file format is hard, so you got the confusing message
that
  you
   saw. However, it is only a warning, it shouldn't affect the
  behavior of
   your app.

   Note that importing code from Flash that uses #initclip is
quite
   dangerous in Flex if the code has any class dependencies. We
only
  track
   class-to-class deps, not codesnippet-to-class deps.

   If you want to make the warning go away, make sure that you
give
  your
   symbols export names. Let me know if you need more details.

[flexcoders] Re: custom skins for flex button

2005-04-28 Thread eerkmans
Actually I'm compiling in flash, using flex classes from
the 'flexforflash.zip' file. This allows you to open a flex button
in flash, put in some extra skins and apply the new skins to the
button using the code below.

My problem is that the new skin can only consist of one symbol and
cannot modify itself according to the width of the button. (Like
the 'real' flex button can.)

--- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Roger Gonzalez [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:
 Assuming you are compiling that component code in Flex,

 [Embed(source='your.swc', symbol='falseUp')] var

 the value after embedding will be as if you typed your version (the
 parse tree is modified). Yes, you could put the symbol name in
 explicitly, but the compiler won't notice it as anything but a
string.
 You need to trigger the linker dependency on the symbol.

  Hi,

  I've got a problem with using custom skins in a flex button. I'm
  using the code below to export a flex button as an SWC component.

  This works fine, but when you give the button a width of, say
100
  pixels, the corners get stretched out because it's just a single
  graphic symbol that is used as the skin for the button.

  Flex itself uses three separate movieclips, the left side, the
  middle and the right side, so that the corners are always nice
and
  round no matter what the size of the button is.

  So how can I access my custom skin symbols in my flex button
SWC ???

  I'm strongly getting the idea that Flex is primarily aimed at
people
  who don't want to customize anything because making a simple
custom
  button can take you all day!

  class TfeResetButton extends mx.controls.Button {

  var falseUpSkin:String = falseUp;
  var falseOverSkin:String = falseOver;
  var falseDownSkin:String = falseDown;

  static var symbolName:String = TfeResetButton;
  static var symbolOwner:Object = TfeResetButton;
  var className:String = TfeResetButton;

  function TfeResetButton(){
  }

  function init() {
  setStyle(fontWeight,normal);
  super.init();
  invalidate();

  }

  static var clipParameters:Object = {resetSkin:1};

  function constructObject2(o:Object):Void {

[flexcoders] Re: MovieClip and Flex question

2005-04-28 Thread eerkmans
Hi,

One thing I know is that a movieclip itself has no graphic 'face',
even if you specify a background color. You need to draw something
in the movieclip first, using the AS drawing commands (lineTo,
curveTo, etc.) or embed something, or create an empty textField and
put some text in the textfield.

   mcSplash.setStyle(backgroundColor, 0xFF);

 Could someone give me advise on how to do this right, please?

Hi,

It's bad design to make your component aware of other things, I mean
creating hardcoded dependencies. You can keep a property in your component,
which would hold reference of Application.application or any other
container.

Component Instances would set that property to
mx.core.Application.application...

Something like this:

class MyComponent extends UIComponent
{
public var applicationRef:UIObject;

//use applicationRef in your code...
}

mx:Application

MyComponent applicationRef=mx.core.Application.application /

/mx:Application

[flexcoders] Handling status event types with Remoting/CFCs

2005-04-28 Thread Tim Blair
Afternoon,

I have a number of CFCs which I'm accessing through RemoteObject calls.
I've noticed that if CodlFusion throws an error (built-in or custom)
then the reponse comes back with an event type of Status, which isn't
handled by either the result or fault handlers specified for the
callback.

I'm using the following to set up the remote call:

mx:RemoteObject id=rSlide source=api.Slide
mx:method name=getSlide
   result=event.call.resultHandler(event)
   fault=event.call.faulthandler(event) /
/mx:RemoteObject

And then this ActionScript to call it:

function getSlideResult(event:Object) { ... }
function getSlideFault(event:Object) { ... }
Function getSlide(slideid:Number) {
var call = rSlide.getSlide({slideid:slideid});
call.resultHandler = Delegate.create(this, getSlideResult);
call.faultHandler = Delegate.create(this, getSlideFault);
}

If an error occurs (in this case, the item we're trying to get doesn't
exist so a custom error is thrown) then neither getSlideResult or
getSlideFault fire. I get the following information back from the
NetConn debugger:

DebugId: 0
EventType: Status
MovieUrl: http://localhost:8700/flex/remote.mxml.swf;

RE: [flexcoders] Disappearing struct from CFC using RemoteObject

2005-04-28 Thread Tim Blair
Pete,

 I believe ColdFusion structs are seen by Flash Remoting as
 java.util.Map instances, so that means they're going to the
 client as ECMA Arrays, not Objects. Thankfully (for now) you
 can use the following ActionScript syntax to get named keys
 from arrays as well as object properties:

Excellent! Just what I was after :)

that's strange - SERVER.PROCESSING messages should definitely trigger your

 Subject: [flexcoders] Handling status event types with Remoting/CFCs

 Afternoon,

 I have a number of CFCs which I'm accessing through
 RemoteObject calls.
 I've noticed that if CodlFusion throws an error (built-in or custom)
 then the reponse comes back with an event type of Status,
 which isn't
 handled by either the result or fault handlers specified for the
 callback.

 I'm using the following to set up the remote call:

 mx:RemoteObject id=rSlide source=api.Slide
 mx:method name=getSlide
result=event.call.resultHandler(event)
fault=event.call.faulthandler(event) /
 /mx:RemoteObject

 And then this ActionScript to call it:

 function getSlideResult(event:Object) { ... }
 function getSlideFault(event:Object) { ... }
 Function getSlide(slideid:Number) {
 var call = rSlide.getSlide({slideid:slideid});
 call.resultHandler = Delegate.create(this, getSlideResult);
 call.faultHandler = Delegate.create(this, getSlideFault);
 }

 If an error occurs (in this case, the item we're trying to get doesn't
 exist so a custom error is thrown) then neither getSlideResult or
 getSlideFault fire. I get the following information back from the
 NetConn debugger:

 DebugId: 0
 EventType: Status

That's what I thought. Anyway, I've worked out what was wrong -- sport
the deliberate (?!) mistake:

MXML:
mx:method name=getSlide
   result=event.call.resultHandler(event)
   fault=event.call.faulthandler(event) /

AS:
call.faultHandler = Delegate.create(this, getSlideFault);

Yes, it's the old casing coming back to bite my in the bum

Cheers anyway,

I havent actually tried this, but I
think this might be what you are looking for - http://www.macromedia.com/software/flex/productinfo/faq/#ancni.
If you qualify for this special license, they will send you a copy of Flex
(which you probably already have) but it comes with a copy of the Flex Builder.

If you go this route, Id be curious
to see how it turns out.

[flexcoders] Tuning my app - Component Isolation

2005-04-28 Thread Fernando Barros
Hi there!

The Macromedia Brazil was helping us to tuning up our application. One
recommendation was put only one web service at the application and all my
others components call it, but I do not know how implement one case. So:

I have a WS in the app that have one function who brings me all the countries
and I pass to the Client's components, an object called objCountries, like this:

Cliente id=Cliente objCountries=objCountries/

However, how can I invoke the WS operation to update the client's data? I mean,
if I made one WS at the app, how can I pass the client's name, phone, etc to
the main app without loosing the component isolation?

I hope I made myself clear :)

Thks in advance!

Have you looked at the Cairngorm architecture (you can download
from here for now, it'll have a new home soon):

http://www.iterationtwo.com/open_source_cairngorm.html

The interaction of the Service Locator, Business Delegate and
Command pattern allow you to have one service (in the Service
Locator), and call that service (via the business delegate)
multiple times in specific contexts (via the Commands) and
handle the results accordingly.

Even if you don't use the framework, the relationship of
patterns should suggest an implementation for you that will
allow you to achieve what you want.

Though it's good practice to have only one definition of
your service, I'm curious as to what kind of tuning you
are trying to achieve ? While I'd say this was a good
practice for code clarity and maintainability, I'm not
so sure this is going to be a huge performance
improvement for you.

Best,

Steven

Just one gotcha to watch out for... Mozilla doesn't
recognize getVariable/setVariable. It must be GetVariable/SetVariable (note
capital initial letter). IE will allow either one.

The Flex *server* product is the one that reduces itself to an
IP-restricted version. However, Flex *Builder* (the IDE) is consistent
with all of the other Macromedia IDEs in that they flat-out expire
after their trial and a serial number is needed to continue using it.
If you think about it, if an IDE is meant to run on one machine by one
user, what would be the point of restricting it to one IP address!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding though?

The component has:

[flexcoders] Re: NetStream instance in Media Components

2005-04-28 Thread kaibabsowats
Thanks for the reply,

When I use the start event to start playing the attached swf, the
swf starts playing but the stream doesn't start playing for a little
longer and since I am using the Media Component I can't tell if its
buffering or doing what. I do know the play head doesn't really start
playing until its done with what its doing (which clearly looks like
buffering). So in short the start event is fired but the video
doesn't play for a while. I had to end up doing the syncing off the
change event which is not very reliable but is doable. As when the
playHead moves the video really is playing.

But the other thing was (Non-Flex or Non-Media components) articles I
saw about NetStream and streaming FLV had some examples about showing
a loader during the buffering time with netStream.onStatus. So I was
hoping for a easy way to get control of the stream's instance to do
the normal FCS FLV streaming enhancements. With Media components I
can't get figure out what is really related to what and loose the
power of talking with FCS. I guess I will have to ditch the Media
Components and create a custom component to use in Flex to really get
it to work. A little disappointed.

--- In flexcoders@yahoogroups.com, Matt Chotin [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
 Hmm, in the code I wrote the start event generally fired right
around the
 time things were ready to go. Even if I called play(someNon0Time) start
 would fire when the buffer had reached the point that I was ready to
play (I
 think).

 The instance is very buried in the code and not really meant to be
exposed.
 I don't have any reliable way of telling you what to look for.

 Is there a instance of NetStream or PlayerNetStream in the Media
 Components? If not does the Media Components create some instance of
 the NetStream or PlayerNetStream some where else?

 The closest thing to FCS and Flex is:
 http://coenraets.com/viewarticle.jsp?articleId=90
 http://coenraets.com/viewarticle.jsp?articleId=90

 In his LiveMediaDisplay class he calls:
 mx.controls.streamingmedia.PlayerNetStream.prototype.play
 = function (s)
 {
 super.setBufferTime(1);
 super.play(s);
 }

 I know this is not calling an instance but overiding the play method
 of PlayerNetStream. But where is the instance? super has to be
 referencing a instance some where right?

 What I am doing right now is I have a Media Component (both Playback
 and the Display/Controller) that loads a FCS streaming flv by
 setMedia, with a url like rtmp://fcsserver/app/instance/some.flv. It
 loads the flv just fine, but the buffering is causing me troubles. As
 the start event on the Media Component doesn't relate to the
 buffering. Basically I am looking for an event that really means the
 flv is ready to play, as I am trying to sync some swf's to it.

Hi everyone,

This post in the MM flex newgroup suggests that asfunction may have
been broken with the release of 1.5:

Here's a super simplified version of what I'm trying to do:

---
?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?

xmlns=*

mx:Script
   function hello_you(you:String) {

mx:Text
   mx:htmlText![CDATA[
 Click a href=asfunction:hello_you,'Dolly'here/a to say hello.

/mx:Text

mx:Spacer height=20/

mx:Button label=Click to say hello click=hello_you('Polly');/

Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong, or if asfunction really

Use the change event on the tree to call a handler, for example,
change=nodeSelected(event). event will contain a reference to the

set up your panel.

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Positioning from a label in a Button

2005-04-28 Thread Joe Berkovitz
Unfortunately it seems that it really *is* that hard. Someone at
Macromedia should take note of the fact that the button label placement
appears to be hardcoded into the border metrics of ButtonSkin.

We wound up having to create a custom theme with its own ButtonSkin
subclass just to override this annoying behavior. It uses a
forceMargin style to selectively override the hardcoded margin of 3
pixels.

To use this one must compile and make use of a theme containing the
following class -- somewhat involved, see MM docs for programmatic
skinning. Once done, one can override the margin by specifying a
forceMargin: 1 or such, in the CSS style applied to one's button.

.   ..  . ...j

===

import mx.skins.halo.ButtonSkin;
import mx.core.ext.UIObjectExtensions;
class yourPackageHere.CustomButtonSkin extends ButtonSkin
{
 static var symbolName:String = ButtonSkin;
 static var symbolOwner:Object = CustomButtonSkin;

 function getBorderMetrics():Object
 {
 var forceMargin = getStyle(forceMargin);
 if (forceMargin == undefined)
 {
 return super.getBorderMetrics();
 }
 else
 {
 __borderMetrics = { left: forceMargin, top: forceMargin,
right: forceMargin, bottom:forceMargin };
 return __borderMetrics;
 }
 }

 static function classConstruct():Boolean
 {
 UIObjectExtensions.Extensions();
 _global.skinRegistry[CustomButtonSkin] = true;
 return true;
 }
 static var classConstructed:Boolean = classConstruct();
 static var UIObjectExtensionsDependency:UIObjectExtensions =

Look at flex-config.xml itself. It has extensive explanatory comments

RE: [flexcoders] HTTPService and dynamic url

2005-04-28 Thread Jeff Beeman

Hi, all, Im new to the list and to
Flex, but a long-time Flash-er. Ive been lurking a couple of days
and finally noticed a question I might actually be able to help out on!

I think if you bind the url attribute to
an objects property, instead of a function, you may have more
success. At this point, it doesnt know when to fire the
getLanguage() function. If it is bound to an objects property,
which you could update on button presses, etc., it would be able to
watch that property and call the service when it changes.
Im fairly new to Flex, so I wont guarantee itll work, but
that method works with other objects (data grids, charts, etc.)

Tracys solution should work too (although, Ive never done
it myself), and youll have to set the property on an event, i.e.:

Button id=myButton
click=loadXML(); /

function loadXML() {

 //

 // set your url string here

 //

 my_service.url = "">

}

Ya, I got something similar to this working. Just added a function
on the Change event of the ComboBox.

Just make sure in the function you set the send function to the http
service.

mx:ComboBox id=ComboBx change=changeCombo()/

function changeCombo(){
service.url = ComboBx.currentItem.data;
service.send()
}

[flexcoders] KeyDown Event returns incorrect ascii values

2005-04-28 Thread Daniel Montero

KeyDown Event returns incorrect ascii values when used with a spanish
layout keyboard.

I followed the calculator tutorial
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/articles/calculator.html
and tried to extend it to accept keyboard input.
I noticed that the ascii values are returned, according to the
documentation, based on an us english layout keyboard.

It works as documented, but not as I expected. I think that function is
completely useless for people with a non-us keyboard,
and keyboard layout cannot be assumed, as we are developing applications
for the internet.

Well, when I tried to get the ascii codes, I was not able to get the
correct codes.
For example, when i press Shift + 2, I get an at @ sign , instead of a
quote sign, as if I had an english keyboard.
I mean, that is very cool when writing games when I need to get full
control of the shift, control, etc, but when I was trying to
get regular keyboard input for a simple calculator, i was not able to
enter the equal sign by pressing
Shift + 0, as I would do in any application using my normal spanish
keyboard, to enter the =, but I get the ) instead.

Can anyone tell me what am i doing wrong, or tell me the rationale
behind this design?

I'm attaching my modified calculator in case someone wants to review it.1

Thanks in advance,

Daniel Montero

  Just one gotcha to watch out for... Mozilla doesn't
  recognize getVariable/setVariable. It must be GetVariable/SetVariable (note
  capital initial letter). IE will allow either one.

 did look at flex-config.mxml... not a clue sorry.

CTRL-F (Find) whitelist or remote or remote-object in
flex-config.xml and you should find the remote-objects whitelist

 and the
 book it self doesn't seem to explain where or give example
 for whitelist..

Index at the back. W. Whitelist. Page 685 - whitelists, overview
495-496

On page 495-497, there are 3 pages of clear description of how to set the
whitelist for RemoteObject calls, HTTPService calls and WebService calls,
and the concept of named services and unnamed services. In fact Chapter 21
opens with a section titled The Flex Whitelist.

Before trying to compile the code from the book and get the examples
working, it's probably worth making sure you've got a clear understanding
of the concepts covered in the relevant and preceeding chapters.

The code is there to underline points in the text, not vice versa.

Once you've read through the chapter material, if you still don't
understand the concept of the whitelist, go and set

remote-objects
  whitelist
unnamed
  source*/source

and then make sure you understand why that's a woefully insecure
way of achieving your short term goal of getting the code to work.

2005-04-28 Thread Jesus Salvador Ramos Cardona

Depending on the origin
of your service, look for a web-service-proxy, http-service-proxy,
remote-object-proxy.

Inside of each you will
find a whitelist in which youll need to specify the origin of
your services, either named or unnamed.

Just one gotcha to watch out for... Mozilla doesn't

RE: [flexcoders] Re: context-sensitive help

2005-04-28 Thread Jason Szeto
As a followup to my post, I realized I was running my test on Firefox, which
does not display its own Context help when pressing F1. In IE, when you
press F1, it pops up the context help. To get around this problem, you can
use a bit of script in your html page.

Create a wrapper for your mxml app (one method is to grab the html source
when you view your mxml app), and then add in the following script into your
html wrapper:

SCRIPT
function dsble_Help(){
//replace this -alert- with your help scripts
alert('confirmation that event will trigger the F1 command')
return false;
}
document.onhelp=dsble_Help
/SCRIPT

Note that your Flex app will still receive the F1 keystroke (ascii 112) in
IE.

You can easily build your own context-sensitive help by listening
for the keyDown event and using the FocusManager's getFocus call to retrieve
the control in focus.

Here is a simple app that can get you started:

?xml version=1.0 encoding=utf-8?
mx:Application xmlns:mx=http://www.macromedia.com/2003/mxml; xmlns=*
width=700 keyDown=handleKey(event)

mx:Script
function handleKey(event)
{
msg.text += handleKey code  + Key.getCode() +  target  +
event.target +
 focus  + getFocusManager().getFocus() + \n;
}
/mx:Script

mx:HBox
mx:Text text=lkajrlekja rekl /
mx:RadioButton label=bobbe/
/mx:HBox

mx:TextInput keyDown=handleKey(event)/
mx:NumericStepper/
mx:Button/

mx:TextArea width=90% height=70% id=msg/

Re: [flexcoders] Is there a javascript flashObj.callFunction(), l ike setVariable?

2005-04-28 Thread John Dowdell
I think this is How can the various browsers talk to the Macromedia Flash
Player?

Here's a weird URL with many screencaptures, but should list or link to the
Player's inbound API:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?event=viewid=KC.tn_15683extid=tn_15683dialogID=7481736iterationID=1sessionID=96301dc81d7227e49115stateID=0%200%207485611mode=simple#jtfc

(I don't recall whether these offer external access to root-level or targeted
in-swf functions, and scanning these documents does not seem to quickly reveal
the answer as previous versions of these documents did.)

Browsers vary in their support. Netscape and Mozilla browsers were the ones who
*initiated* this kind of intercommunication. The material on the website
doesn't
seem as easy to navigate as in previous years, but current browser support
should be listed at least in the Release Notes for each Player:
http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flash/releasenotes.html

Summary: Browser/plugin intercommunication has been noble in theory since 1996,
but still isn't really all that practical, unless you *know* your audience will
be in standard configurations of IE/Win, or Java-enabled Firefox, or both. This
may change in the future as new intercommunication APIs come on line:

[flexcoders] Newbie: Flash vs. Flex, CPUs, Lazslo

2005-04-28 Thread Jim Schneider
1. Could someone explain (or point me to a doc/faq) that tells me why I
would choose Flex over Flash. What can Flex do that Flash can't? Even if
it's more difficult in Flash, perhaps it's worth it given the cost of Flex.

2. Speaking of cost, I read on MM's site that they recommend a typical
deployment of a Flex app have 6 - 8 CPUs. Is this true in practice? If I
have an app that has 50 users (would grow to perhaps 10K users) who don't
hit the system very hard, what are CPU requirements? Are there any
performance benchmarks that I can use as a guideline for what I would need
initially and at what point I would need to upgrade. As a small company, we
can probably chew off $12K, $70K is another story (unless I misunderstand
the licensing).

3. Has anyone had any real-world experience/lessons-learned with Laszlo and
any comparisons with Flex?

Thanks

Jim

Hi,

You are missing the auth-method setting,
for example:

 login-config

/login-config

In your
flex installation, under resources\security\examples there are samples for
using flex with authentication. Please look at the readme.txt for configuration
, and addingusers.txt for how to add users for different app server.

2005-04-28 Thread Tracy Spratt
The example is attached, along with the sample xml files I created to
test it.

Your array exists at result.diffgram.PulseLoansToday. In the example I
left the diffgram node out of my test xml.

Basically, you assign the today and yesterday arrays to variables,
iterate through the today items, get the matching yesterday item, build
a combined item object, and add it to the combined dataProvider array,
which is bound to the DataGrid DataProvider.

I'll take a stab at this one.

As a Flash IDE developer for many a year, I've found that its really a
bottle neck and a slow process at times. Flash IDE takes a lot of
discipline and understanding of the concept of flash itself and you
better be armed before taking on a large project.

When developing in large projects you tend to be a one man show, as to
share resources or code amongst other developers takes a lot of
communication and patience. That alone improves why FLEX is a valid
purchase.

As for what can FLEX do FLASH can't? not much technically as FLEX is
really an alternative approach to the end goal. It does bring a lot
more to the table then FLASH IDE in terms of Rapid Development. An
example would be Remoting, any here who have used Flash Remoting in
IDE form know its more tedious to implement then FLEX. Its examples
like this that change your perspective on FLASH vs FLEX.

On top of that, FLEX handles a lot of your tasks for you, things like
initialization modals, busy cursors, history management etc are all
automated tasks within FLEX.

In terms of costs, i've seen soo many projects take months to do
what could be done in FLEX in half the time. These are also run by
some very competent FLASH developers who have years of experience and
know the language/tool off by heart. Its just cumbersome, slow and at
times very tedious.

That being said, you do a lot more control visually / debugging wise
in FLASH IDE then you currently at present have in FLEX. On top of
that your portability is much more open then at present with FLEX.

Implementing Runtime Shared Libraries in FLASH IDE is awful and
painful, just ask JessterXL all about that one, he's mastered it but
he went through a learning curve and pain to get to that point. I like
wise, i think i've got it mastered but found it took a lot of
imagination and research.

In FLEX? bah its next to easy as implementing a Tree component.

In FLASH MX 2004 Pro, implementing even a Tree component (databinding
aside) isn't a simple task and requires some extra work then compared
to FLEX.

Cost wise, you'll blow more money using FLASH IDE then you will via
FLEX for a large application.

If you are building a small RIA app that isn't as large and doesn't
require a team of developers to work on, then yes FLASH MX 2004 Pro is
the suitable resource.

Not sure on server-side, i've oftend wondered that my self and while
i've read various optimization techniques and resources i'm still
skeptical of its use in terms of high volume. That being said, we
could easily use a DUAL CPU setup here at work for a FLEX application
(approx 300-500 end users hitting it daily) and provided there is
enough ram thrown at it, it should hold up fine. If need be i'd look
into clustering the servers or throwing more RAM at it. I've FLEX
Server tends to have ok automated garbage collection and simply apply
the same server-side rules as i do with a CFMX server.

 3. Has anyone had any real-world experience/lessons-learned with Laszlo and
 any comparisons with Flex?

I've gone down the path of using Laszlo as a prototype concept,
comparing it to FLEX? In many ways the XML flavour Laszlo brings to
the table is more simplistic but at times limiting. FLEX also offers a
much sweeter options in terms of packaging applications and say
integrating with CENTRAL. On top of that its Flash Remoting
capabilities from memory weren't there and keep in mind it's based on
FLASH 5 which also means a reduction in flash technology advancements
(6 had a significant increase in features alone)

I've found Laszlo also to be 3 steps behind FLEX/FLASH IDE itself. It
feels like they are simply picking up the bread crumbs and if anything
i'd rather look at the XAMLON in terms of FLEX alternatives - mainly
as i see that as being the darkhorse in the race for XML UI creation
;)

Hope i helped? or just ranted... heh.

 OK. Let me backup. Below is a sample of the data returned (an
array
 of objects?) from the WS with the date specified as 1/10/2005. The
 dataProvider for the datagrid

is {service1.PulseLoansToday.result.diffgram.PulseLoansToday.PulseLo

 Binding to the dataProvider as specified produces the desired
 results within the datagrid (using CATEGORY, TOTALBAL, etc. as
 the column names).

 Here's the rub; within the SAME datagrid, I need to display one
 column of TOTALBAL for the selected date(1/10/2005 in this case),
 and another column of TOTALBAL for yesterday's date (thisDate
 request is empty so default is previous day's date). Since I can
 only bind a datagrid to one dataProvider, I need a way to combine
 the results into a new dataProvider that I can bind to the
datagrid.

 Thanks for your help,

Re: [flexcoders] Newbie: Flash vs. Flex, CPUs, Lazslo

2005-04-28 Thread JesterXL
Scott hit just about everything. I'll just repeat it anyway as short as
possible; feel free to ask for further clarity.

1. Flex allows you to develop form based, web 'esque applications faster
than you can do in Flash. You have a better, more mature component set, and
layout is automatically done for you. All files are ASCII vs. the closed
binary format you create in Flash (FLA), which makes it easier to edit.
Additionally, all classes are created for you vs. in Flash you have to merge
these with visual objects that have nothing usually to do with coding
controls.

That's why I like it vs. Flash, and I converted to using Flash full-time at
Flash 5, 2001 from Director. I'm trying to convert to Flex for anything not
related to mobile development, games, or designer 'esque sites/applications.

2. Don't know, I develop fat client applications, and my server is usually
handled by another team member, and our servers aren't pounded.

3. No, nor do I want to. Lazlo's features do not sound appealing, such as
Flash Player 5 output (I heard recently they supported 6 and 7 supposedly).
The attitude for Lazlo was XML layout, but I have heard hide nor hair as far
as accolades for its component set, if it even has any. I'm subjective as
I've never physically downloaded nor installed it... I keep saying I will,
but they never make it sound appealing; it's free, and that still doesn't
make me want it.

 would choose Flex over Flash. What can Flex do that Flash can't? Even if
 it's more difficult in Flash, perhaps it's worth it given the cost of
 Flex.

As a small company,
 we
 can probably chew off $12K, $70K is another story (unless I misunderstand
 the licensing).

Not sure on server-side, i've oftend wondered that my self and while
i've read various optimization techniques and resources i'm still
skeptical of its use in terms of high volume. That being said, we

RE: [flexcoders] Noob - Drag Drop Help Please

2005-04-28 Thread Matt Chotin

I think you want to use dataForFormat(items).
We describe the drag and drop from the list classes here: http://livedocs.macromedia.com/flex/15/flex_docs_en/0623.htm.
In your case this will return an array of items, you may simply want to grab
the first element of that array. I would hope that after that change your code
might work.

Hello Everyone,

I really need your help understanding the Drop of the Drag
 Drop. I am trying to drop an image from a
tileList onto a canvas, but I am having issues with creating the
child in the canvas. I am very new to ActiveScript and Flex, and
Im sorry if this has been covered.

Here is the drop code:

--

function doDragDrop(event) {

doDragExit(event);

 var
item = event.dragSource.dataForFormat(product);

Alert.show(item[0], Alert Box,Alert.OK);

 if
(item != undefined) {

item.mapX = event.target.mouseX - item.mouseInitX;

item.mapY = event.target.mouseY - item.mouseInitY;

 }

cvsPage.createChild(mx.controls.Image,newTxtFld+item, {x:'xLoc',
y:'yLoc'});

}

As you can see, I have taken some sample code and
Im trying to apply it my needs (learning by example), but I have no idea
where I am going wrong. I am having a hard time finding an example of
dragging an image from a list and dropping (creating) on a canvas.

Additional Questions

--

Why am I not getting a value to display in the alert box?

What does the dataForFormat(STRING) refer
to? Is this just an arbitrary name?

*

dataForFormat(
format: String) : Object

format: String - Sting that specifies a label that
describes the format for the data to return. This parameter is required.

Many thanks for the help in advance.

Sounds to me like Flex works fine, FlexBuilder does not.

Flex when it times out will work fine as a standalone dev server.
FlexBuilder, however, will not, and you will have to either A call support
and get an extension, B sign up for a Non-Developer License, C Use
another editor like Emacs, Vim, Dreamweaver, etc. or D purchase Flex.

Thanks for the reply,

When I use the start event to start
playing the attached swf, the
swf starts playing but the stream doesn't start
playing for a little
longer and since I am using the Media Component I
can't tell if its
buffering or doing what. I do know the play
head doesn't really start
playing until its done with what its doing (which
clearly looks like
buffering). So in short the
start event is fired but the video
doesn't play for a while. I had to end up
doing the syncing off the
change event which is not very reliable but is
doable. As when the
playHead moves the video really is playing.

But the other thing was (Non-Flex or Non-Media
components) articles I
saw about NetStream and streaming FLV had some
examples about showing
a loader during the buffering time with
netStream.onStatus. So I was
hoping for a easy way to get control of the
stream's instance to do
the normal FCS FLV streaming enhancements.
With Media components I
can't get figure out what is really related to
what and loose the
power of talking with FCS. I guess I will
have to ditch the Media
Components and create a custom component to use in
Flex to really get
it to work. A little disappointed.

 think).

 The instance is very buried in the code and
not really meant to be
exposed.
 I don't have any reliable way of telling you
what to look for.

else?

 The closest thing to FCS and Flex is:
 http://coenraets.com/viewarticle.jsp?articleId=90
 http://coenraets.com/viewarticle.jsp?articleId=90

 In his LiveMediaDisplay class he calls:

mx.controls.streamingmedia.PlayerNetStream.prototype.play
 = function (s)

{

super.setBufferTime(1);

super.play(s);

}

 I know this is not calling an instance but
overiding the play method
 of PlayerNetStream. But where is the
instance? super has to be
 referencing a instance some where right?

 What I am doing right now is I have a Media
Component (both Playback
 and the Display/Controller) that loads a FCS
streaming flv by
 setMedia, with a url like
rtmp://fcsserver/app/instance/some.flv. It
 loads the flv just fine, but the buffering is
causing me troubles. As
 the start event on the Media
Component doesn't relate to the
 buffering. Basically I am looking for
an event that really means the
 flv is ready to play, as I am trying to sync
some swf's to it.

RE: [flexcoders] Re: HTTPService and dynamic url

2005-04-28 Thread Matt Chotin

Everyone is right here. When binding from
a function we look at the parameters to the function to see if theyve
changed so if there are no parameters theres nothing we can do to tell
if the return value of the function has changed (unless of course you put a ChangeEvent
on the function itself and have the appropriate event fired when you want that
function to re-execute). If you changed the function a little you could do getLanguage(accUSA.cbLstLanguages.selectedItem)
and then just use that value as a parameter. Now when selectedItem changed the
url would update correctly (however that would not re-execute the httpservice,
youd still need to do that elsewhere which is why maybe combining it all
in the function would be better).

KeyDown Event returns incorrect ascii values when
used with a spanish
layout keyboard.

I followed the calculator tutorial
http://www.macromedia.com/devnet/flex/articles/calculator.html
and tried to extend it to accept keyboard input.
I noticed that the ascii values are returned,
according to the
documentation, based on an us english layout
keyboard.

It works as documented, but not as I
expected. I think that function is
completely useless for people with a non-us
keyboard,
and keyboard layout cannot be assumed, as we are
developing applications
for the internet.

Well, when I tried to get the ascii codes, I was
not able to get the
correct codes.
For example, when i press Shift + 2, I get an at
@ sign , instead of a
quote sign, as if I had an english keyboard.
I mean, that is very cool when writing games when
I need to get full
control of the shift, control, etc, but when I was
trying to
get regular keyboard input for a simple
calculator, i was not able to
enter the equal sign by pressing
Shift + 0, as I would do in any application using
my normal spanish
keyboard, to enter the =, but I get
the ) instead.

Can anyone tell me what am i doing wrong, or tell
me the rationale
behind this design?

I'm attaching my modified calculator in case
someone wants to review it.1

RE: [flexcoders] Re: Positioning from a label in a Button

2005-04-28 Thread Gordon Smith
A Button has an undocumented property called labelPath whose value is a
reference to the TextField that displays the Button's label. You should be
able to change labelPath._x and labelPath._y in an event handler for the
Button's 'initialize' or 'creationComplete' event.

The Button code is supposed to automatically center the label inside the
Button, taking into account the font size and the button height. Are you
saying this isn't working for you? Can you send a snippet of code or file a
bug?
