[flexcoders] splitting textarea lines into an array

Hi,

Does anyone has a nice solution for converting text
in a textArea component into items of an array so that each line is an item of
the array.

Thanx

AW: [flexcoders] Isn´t there any release of Adobe Ap ollo yet? Alpha maybe....

2006-10-31 Thread Benjamin Dobler

I would like to know if
we will have the possibility to execute command line tools. If so the
possibilities are really endless.

At the moment i`m
building a lot of apps with zinc and if it misses some functionality I simply
write a tool that I use via the command line in the background.

So some sort of starting
a process and calling a command line tool with parameters would be killer.

Yep, I know how you feel. The suspense is
brutal. I could have already built and sold like 8 products built on it.

There are probably too many holes in it still, or at least that's what I keep
telling myself. :o)

[flexcoders] ByteArray - Custom Class

2006-08-29 Thread Benjamin Dobler

Hi,

i started playing with the Socket Class and Byte Arrays. So
far i`ve a Java Socket Server that sends all the Byte Data back to all
listening clients.

One client sends for example an array. This comes perfectly
back too all connected clients. All the data is still intact and i can easily
find out about the
type of the object by using typeof. This only seems to work for primitive
types. All other types become type Object. Is there a way to find out with
which class an Object belongs
when it was converted to an byte array? I think it should be possible because
it`s all amf. Any ideas?

Found it out myself!

Before serializing the instance you have
to register the class with an alias. Than everything is perfect.

Like so:

flash.net.registerClassAlias(de.benz.test,Test);

var customClass:Test=new Test();

customClass.test=hallo;

out.text+=\n+typeof customClass;

byteObj.writeObject(customClass);

socket.writeBytes( byteObj );

socket.flush();

coool!

[flexcoders] Flash Data Services - help needed

2006-08-23 Thread Benjamin Dobler

Hi everyone,

finally i found the time to try out the data services. I`m
using tomcat 5.5 and Java Open Transaction Manager form my basic setup.

I was able to run the samples that ship with fds but now
when i try to set up my own projects i get stuck with some errors.

I get the following message from the tomcat logs:

Exception in thread
RTMP-Server flex.messaging.endpoints.rtmp.RTMPException: The RTMP
server has encountered a fatal exception starting up: Address already in use:
bind

 at
flex.messaging.endpoints.rtmp.BaseNIORTMPServer.run(BaseNIORTMPServer.java:310)

 at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown
Source)

Let me say i`m not a server or java guy so if anyone
has an idea.

It would also be good if someone could point me to a basic
tutorial for setting up fds and building a simple application not based
on the samples that ship with fds.
For me it would be important to know how to configure the various configuration
xml files in the flex folder.

Thanx for any help

[flexcoders] Cairngorm starter question

2006-07-19 Thread Benjamin Dobler
O.k. this could become stupid...

I`m I the process of learning the cairngorm framework. As a traditional
flash developer there are some things that are hard to understand.
I think I understood the general flow of the cairngorm architecture and I
successfully implemented it in a project i`m working on.
So far I have user clicks - Event generated - FrontController maps to
Command - Business Delegate calls ServiceLocator and updates Model - Model
updates view via Bindings. Now that after hard lessons that I understood
this i`m totally confused when it comes to normal user gestures. For example
when a user clicks the play Button of a video player do I have to go all
this way to actually play the video?
Another question is with the ServiceLocator. I understand how to use it with
webservices or Remoting calls but what is if I have a custom class of a
framework that handles things different (e.g. YouTubeService from the lab
libraries). Can I write a Wrapper for these so that they work like e.g.
mx:RemoteObject. Or if I use the fileReference to get a file. How do I
make these things fit with the ServiceLocator?

You see i`m a bit confused but it`s fun.
Thanx for any help.

 As Jesse noted, the first use of that acronym appeared to be in this
 500K PDF from Macromedia in March 2002:
 http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flash/whitepapers/richclient.pdf

 A year or two back I tried to confirm this through the
 recall.archive.org engine (since deceased), which did textual analysis
 of the archive.org content, and it did confirm that this Macromedia
 document was the first usage of that RIA term. I can't prove that no
 one ever used that phrase before, but I've never seen any evidence to
 counter its original definition being by Macromedia staff.

 I got tired of regularly finding an dopening that PDF then clicking
 through pages, so I copied the guts of it over here:
 http://www.markme.com/jd/archives/007312.cfm

 Paraphrasing and summarizing that crucial aspects of rich client
 technologies section, these were defined as:
 (a) use of a high-performance runtime for code, content and
 communications;
 (b) integration of media types (video in the same window, eg);
 (c) a common object model for these multimedia services;
 (d) ability to use and add components, for development efficiency;
 (e) XML data communications with servers;
 (f) online/offline transparency (we're all still working on that one!);
 (g) friendly to various browsers, operating systems, devices... there's
 explicit mention of beyond the desktop non-PC work here.

 The term RIA has been bandied about in much of the AJaX hullaballoo,
 but I'm not sure any current JavaScript examples actually meet the above
 criteria -- modern JavaScript techniques have recently added ongoing XML
 transfers with the server, but they don't seem in the same ballpark on
 the rich aspect of that popular RIA moniker.

 Benjamin,

 Create a class (cssl) with a TextField.StyleSheet (tss) attached and
 utilise its load() or parseCSS() method. Then loop through the CSS style
 objects created within tss using _css or _style properties (ugly but
 there doesn't seem to be a function to get these out). For each of these
 style selector objects, create a CSSStyleDeclaration() at
 _global.styles[styleName] level and use setStyle() to set each property.

 I haven't tested it in-depth yet but it seems to work for most CSS
 styles I've tried.

 Cheers,
 Rich

AW: [flexcoders] Flex 1.5 price

2005-03-31 Thread Benjamin Dobler

Why no open source Flex?

I mean the swf format is
open. The tools are their. Merging components, creating Actionscript components

It`s all doable and there
is nothing magical about flex. In fact I think that a flex like system is just
the

next logical step for
flash development. All this we need to get the enterprise developers
on board is

just shareholder talk.
Flash developers have for a long time pushed the limits of flash and i`m sure
that

it`s possible to built
something like flex as open source. You would say there is Laszlo but for me

it`s not an alternative. I
want something compatible to flex and that uses actionscript and that
recognizes my

components built  in flash.
So I want flex for free!

Don`t get me wrong. I
love Flex. It`s a great product but in my opinion there is enough space for an
open source

Project that fits for
smaller (budget wise) projects.

For my final thesis i`m
working on such a project. I have successfully built a Linker/Loader System and
an

MXML parser.  (I will
post about the progression here www.richapps.de
)

I think a real open
source Flex alternative would be great even for Flex itself. It is the only

way to win against the
xaml, xul whatever rivals.

Betreff: RE: [flexcoders] Flex 1.5
price

Hi Lucian,

I will need to speak to
my clients ( I can't remember if they purchased the Flex License at v1 or v1.5
).

I'm sure that there is an
amicable agreement that can be reached - price increases are an ongoing problem
for everyone around the world but particularly for the small to medium
whoever/whatever. Although larger companies must be careful to count the
pennies (therefore looking after the pounds) they are in a much better position
to find the cash to make larger purchases if it makes sense in the bigger
picture.

I imagine ( and I may be
wrong ) that most of us are a little disturbed by not being able to see a price
on a tag. Hardly anyone in the UK
is used to haggling, and personally I'm not keen on squeezing as much out of
someone as I can. I am not the one who authorises purchases, and I imagine that
most of us here are in the same boat.

It just feels very
uncomfortable seeing a price tag for a small bag of sweets, a price tag for a
large bag of sweets, but for medium and jumbo bags you have to haggle with the
shop keeper. I'm not saying its wrong - I just think that lots of developers
like me have a hard time having to go back to the people who make the
purchasing decisions and trying to get them to pay an unknown but considerable
amount of money for something that they are not sure that they want, and we are
the ones that have to persuade them that they want it.

For my part, I sold Flex
based on the knowledge that my clients wanted to develop their webapps using
the Flash Player. My experience of creating webapps in the Flash environment
was most unpleasant(especially when having to work with designers that
can't program and aren't at all tidy!) so I pushed the fact that the webapps
would be developed much much faster using Flex thanwith Flash. Yes, there
has been a bigger learning curve than I thought, but if I had tried to do this
using Flash only - well I think that I would be in a hospital room with nice padded
walls to dampen the sound of my screaming!

I love Flex. And I'm
gladsomeone else has bought it for me to work with.

Kind Regards,

Simon Fifield

Maintenance will be
calculated based on the CPUs or Quick Start price if you go that route. . I
think thats pretty consistent with other software industry norms.

Ill make you the same
offer, Simon. Where you have serious projects running, lets talk directly and
find a way to make this work out.

My clients have also
stretched themselves to purchase the 2cpu license, which cost more than
theDual Processor server they purchased to match the spec.

Now that the license for
Flex is either 1 or 4 cpu does this mean that my clients are going to have to
more than double the original purchase price when they need to renew their
maintenance license?

Or will the 1 cpu license
cover the whole server? (i.e. does cpu mean server or does it mean processors?)

What about a 2cpu
license?
