[flexcoders] Maintaining component state across sessions
I need to maintain the state of a handful of components across sessions in an AIR/Flex app. I've written a HistoryManager, but it doesn't go down to the level of selected item, which nodes are opened/closed, scroll position, and so on. The data for all components is dynamic, so I also need to check if selected items, opened nodes, or otherwise still exist. Anyone come up with an elegant way to accomplish this?

Re: [flexcoders] Re: Beta Flex 2 release Date? Any one for a Guess
To clarify, will I also need a license for Flex Enterprise Services (in addition to Flex Builder 2 and CFMX7) to publish and subscribe between a Flex client and a CFC? Or will basic pub/sub functionality be built directly into CFMX7 apart from any need for FES? Do you think you can use the pub/sub functionality as described?I'll definately use pub/sub functionality. However, I'm not clear yet on when I'll do so with CFMX7 versus Flex Enterprise Services versus Flash Media Server 2 versus custom socket servers. Looking forward to learning more about the different functionality of each offering during the beta! How do you envision a CFC backend to Flex2 Data services? For projects where I'm mixing CF and Java, I'd consider passing everything through Flex Enterprise Services, as I prefer a single point of entry. I'll need to better understand the differences in functionality between the CF gateway and FES before I can really envision when I'd use CFCs versus POJOs on the backend. -- Flexcoders Mailing List FAQ: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/flexcoders/files/flexcodersFAQ.txt Search Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexcoders%40yahoogroups.com SPONSORED LINKS Web site design development Computer software development Software design and development Macromedia flex Software development best practice YAHOO! RE: [flexcoders] Poll: Flex developer US$ rate?
Rates vary widely depending on type of gig (consulting, contractor, or employee), industry, location, depth of knowledge in software engineering, experience with flash and other related technologies, and so on. I'd expect a highly experienced Flex developer that runs a consulting firm to bring in $150 to $300/hr or more. On the other hand, I'd expect a college student using Flex to create a web app for a local small business to make $15 to $30/hr. -Original Message- From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Aldo Bucchi Sent: Friday, November 18, 2005 6:44 AM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] Poll: Flex developer US$ rate? Naturally, you'll also be able to leverage those same new features, so we thought we'd start giving you a run down of what's new. Of course we don't have beta software for you to play with yet, so for now, we'll provide a lot of detail so you can evaluate these new features and give guidance for us. XML manipulation in Flex 2.0 is going to get a lot more powerful, as well as faster.By the time that Flex 2.0 ships, the Flash Player will support E4X ("ECMAScript for XML"), a set of programming language extensions adding native XML support to ECMAScript. The player team is busy implementing Standard ECMA-357 as described in http://www.ecma-international.org/publications/standards/Ecma-357.htm. Here'show the spec describes whatthis feature offers:"E4X adds native XML datatypes to the ECMAScript language, extends the semantics of familiar ECMAScript operators for manipulating XML objects and adds a small set of new operators for common XML operations, such as searching and filtering. It also adds support for XML literals, namespaces, qualified names and other mechanisms to facilitate XML processing." Lets take a look at a few examples of how you can read XML data using E4X. As in the current player, you'll be able to create variables of type XML by parsing a String. But XML literals will now be supported as well: var employees:XML = employees employee ssn="123-123-1234" name first="John" last="Doe"/ address street11 Main St./street citySan Francisco/city stateCA/state zip98765/zip /address /employee employee ssn="789-789-7890" name first="Mary" last="Roe"/ address street99 Broad St./street cityNewton/city stateMA/state zip01234/zip /address /employee /employees; Instead of using DOM-style APIs like firstChild, nextSibling, etc., with E4X you just "dot down" to grab the node you want.Multiple nodes are indexable with [n], similar to the elements of an Array: trace(employees.employee[0].address.zip); --- 98765 Tograb an attribute, you just use the .@ operator: trace([EMAIL PROTECTED]); --- 789-789-7890 If you don't pick out a particular node, you get all of them, as an indexable list: trace(employees.employee.name); --- name first="John" last="Doe"/ name first="Mary" last="Roe"/ (And note that nodeseven toString() themselves into formatted XML!) A handy double-dot operator lets you omit the "path" down into the XML _expression_, so you could shorten the previous three examples to trace(employees..zip[0]); trace([EMAIL PROTECTED]]); trace(employees..name); You can use a * wildcard toget a list of multiple nodes or attributes with various names, and the resulting list is indexable: trace(employees.employee[0].address.*); --- street11 Main St./street citySan Francisco/city stateCA/state zip98765/zip trace([EMAIL PROTECTED]); --- Doe You don't have to hard-code the identifiers for the nodes or attributes... they can themselves be variables: var whichNode:String = "zip"; trace(employees.employee[0].address[whichNode]); --- 98765 var whichAttribute:String = "ssn"; trace([EMAIL PROTECTED]); --- 789-789-7890 Anew for-each loop lets you loop over multiple nodes or attributes: for each (var ssn:XML in [EMAIL PROTECTED]) { trace(ssn); } --- 123-123-1234 789-789-7890 Most powerful of
RE: [flexcoders] FLEX and CF7..
It depends what you're trying to accomplish and what metric you use to measure performance. The price-to-performance ratio, however, is best with Tomcat. ;-) On a more serious note, my take on why Flex doesn't include a JRun license is that it is being targeted toward Enterprises who are very likely to already be running WebSphere, WebLogic, Oracle, or Tomcat in their environment. On the other hand, most CF shops don't already have a Java application server deployed in there environment so a JRun license is a necessity. -Original Message- From: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Scott Barnes Sent: Wednesday, May 11, 2005 10:11 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [flexcoders] FLEX and CF7.. On 5/12/05, Cliff Meyers [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: If you purchase a Flex license it comes with a full license of JRun. When you run the Flex installer you can either have it create a .war file to deploy to an existing J2EE server, or choose to install JRun4 on your server and then put Flex on top of it. The same is true of ColdFusion MX7: if you spring for an Enterprise license you can install CF with a full version of JRun4, or as a .war to deploy to any other J2EE server. You could also install CFMX7 in Standalone mode, but IMHO this would be waste since you'd be sacrificing the full J2EE capability (Servlets, JSPs, EJBs, etc) as well as some other features in CFMX7 Enterprise Edition. If you want to deploy CFMX7 and Flex on top of the same J2EE server (be it the free JRun you get with the CF/Flex licenses or any other J2EE server) you're still going to need the CFMX7 Enterprise edition. If you are looking for the most cost-effective route, you can do the following: (1) Buy a Flex license and install it on a box with the full version of JRun that's included, (2) Buy a CFMX7 Standard license and install it on a different box in Standalone mode You might also be able to run them side by side on the same box, but usually I think MM will discourage that behavior since having two JRun servers on the same box will probably cause issues. Port conflicts immediately jump to mind since different parts of the J2EE machinery will probably try to bind to the same default ports, although you could probaby adjust the .xml config files to resolve this. However you're also going to add a lot more overhead to your hardware by running two separate J2EE servers on the same box. If your company is willing to spring for the hefty price tag of Flex, is the difference between CFMX7 Standard and Enterprise really that significant? RE: [flexcoders] MXMXL Editor
In addition to FlexBuilder, I use Eclipse with the following plug-ins installed: * OxygenXML for coding MXML (can also use JavaScript editor for Actionscript) * CFEclipse for CFML and CFCs * Sysdeo for controlling Tomcat from within the IDE * Eclipse's built-in Java support for POJOs that will be called as Remote Objects XMLSpy and PrimalScript are also good. -Original Message- From: Ketan Bengali [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 13, 2005 9:17 PM To: flexcoders@yahoogroups.com Subject: [flexcoders] MXMXL Editor Has anybody tried any editors apart from from Flex Builder for mxml?
