If it was that simple I would not be asking for help.
I can figure out how to change state when all controls are in the same
application, but I can't figure out how to make a "custom control"
change the state of the parent.
If the control has the register button, and this is the
'parent' page,
I can find some sample code that will help me get started.

"Adobe Flex 2 Training from the Source" is really quite good IMO and it
goes over states and transitions pretty well. Lynda.com is great, but I
think this book is more extensive than the current Lynda courses.
