Raghu,               You can also use progressive layout to wait for data coming back from remote calls. Based on the data that is recieved from the remote call certain components are to enabled or disabled. I believe, all the remote calls are asynchronous in Flex and to add synchronous behaviour to this one work around is to have a onResult function and then having the logic there. But how to do if the application initialization has to start with the call to a remote method, wait for the response and then proceed further.
