Dudley,
Thanks for all your help with my failure to connect problem with a Flex
3000 and PSDR 2.6.4. As we could not resolve this by email, I sent the
radio in for repair. Although Flex replaced two ICs I don't think this
was actually the problem, because when I received the radio back it had
Thanks to everyone on this list for their helpful comments. The F3k

This radio worked for years before the problem developed.

George,
Patrick, you are no doubt right on all points. There are still 50
year-old computers, like the IBM 1620, around in museums and I suppose
they still work. The real issue is, will the early adopters who bought
the Flex 6000 series still be happy with 50 year old technology, or will

Very well put, Brian. This is exactly the right and professional way to

I'd add just one more suggestion, which most hams won't be able to use.

An even better possibility that Flex might consider is to remember ATU
settings by frequency, not just band. My SGC and LDG tuners do this and
remember the tuning parameters for the last few hundred frequencies
tuned, regardless of band. When I transmit on (or near) one of these,

Absolutely. The lack of a sticky per-band setting makes the tuner
useless for automatic Winlink RMS and ALE operation, both of which scan
multiple bands. I run both of these 7x24. Otherwise, it's a great tuner now.

Hi Sasi,
A Flex 3000 doesn't require a sound card. It has its own ADC and DAC.
I can't comment on the suitability of your Lifebook but perhaps others
can. There seem to be several Lifebook models with significant
differences in their processing power. Which one do you have?

Alan,
There's a wire table in the back of the ARRL Handbook, and also on-line,
where you can find the right gauge wire to get the voltage drop down to
where you want it. You can just cut off the present cable near the
connector, and solder-and-tape splice on the new heavier gauge wire. I

In all this discussion about matching, just remember that there are two
issues with antennas.
1. You have to get the power into the antenna by matching
2. The antenna has to radiate the power in a direction that will reach
the intended receiver.
You can learn a lot about your antenna by mode
In my view time-critical digital modes like ALE and Pactor III is
another area where analog still has an advantage. I say this both on
theoretical grounds, and from my own experience running RMS and pilot

If you can run full power into a dummy load but not into an antenna, you
almost certainly have RF pickup problems.
I had problems like this with my Flex-3000. For me, the worst problem

I did this with a Flex-3000 and PTC-IIe some months ago. The signals you
need are on the Flexwire connector. It helps if you start with a cable
from SCS with the DIN connector already attached since these are hard to
solder. I found it quick and easy to do, and it worked exceedingly well.
