Steve I used to get a headache after working a 48-hour contest with my big box
radio. I wasn’t alone. There was a lot of noise in the headphones coming from
the rig. Once I started using a Flex 1500 and now I’ve added a Flex 3000 the
headaches have gone away :) I’m now looking at a 6300. BTW when a buddy who is
360 meters away fires up his ICOM 756 Pro or his 7700 I can really tell when
he’s on the band. When he switches to his Flex 3000 not only don’t I hear him
but I can work CW contacts inside his transmitting envelop. We discovered this
by accident when I was searching and pouncing and inadvertently tuned under him
just as he started running. Using the Icoms we tried to be on different bands
when contesting.

Not saying the Flex system with its active windows for SDR and contesting
software is for everyone but it works so well I sold my other radio. I’d highly
recommend dropping $500 on a used 1500 to give SDR a try if you’ve got a
computer with enough firepower to run the software. Most current I5 computers
will work fine. I’ve got a cheap quad-core I7 tower that runs the SDR at 2% CPU
and works flawlessly.
