Try PSK on 14.070 - open almost 20 hours a day. Often there's no SSB, little
CW but plenty of digital activity.

I agree that the PSK sub-band is a good indicator of band condition as
there is regular activity there.

I am trying to teach new a new General-class licensee how to operate
on HF and getting nowhere. I don't know about the rest of you but I
can't hear a thing on any band. WWV is barely audible on either 10MHz
or 15MHz. sigh

No kidding! This can't be helping sales of HF radios! I suppose it
means I need to get up a better 80M and maybe even a 160M antenna.

Brian,
IMHO, you and your students should consider building the 5-Band Hex Beam
described in the March 2009 issue of QST (p. 30). I can't speak for that
particular antenna, but I have had a 20m mono-band Traffie Hex Beam for
about 5 years now (recently modified to include 17m), and it's a

Well, yes, as the flex I am using at school is a K2 the kids and I built.
as I'm seeing over 40 stations on the 20 meter PSK waterfall.
You know, the best indicator of the band opening up is traffic on the
PSK portion of the band. Everyone crams into the same 3KHz so finding
activity is a no-brainer.
Finally starting to hear some sigs on 14070 KHz.
Just in time to have to go do something else.
Bah, humbug.

Brian, all kidding aside the work you do to promote the ham radio hobby with
the students is admirable and much appreciated by the ham fraternity. Thank
you for your efforts and contributions.
