Does anyone know anything about how the radio compass (ADF), upper left
instrument should work? I'm not sure yet where the radio controls are (the
radio actually sits behind the pilot seat).

What information that I am aware of would indicate an RMI.
Correct me if I'm wrong but these RMI units had a dial/card/rose
attached to a gyro and thus operated like the gyro compass on the
hsi. The large arrow was ADF and the small arrow pointed toward a
VOR
