If you can export the model in VRML2, try to use, if you can, 3DSMax. You can import 
the model and reduce the number of polygons and export it in the ASE format. I've made 
the same thing with my model of MB339, generating a file of 1.5 Mb, and it looks great 
in FlightGear and the frames doesn't drop.
