Re: [Flightgear-devel] Altitude above ground

2007-08-02 Thread Ron Jensen
Let me try to hijack this thread to ask a related question:

How do I get the altitude of the ground at a given location?

I have a simple little tool that prints the base path and index for a
given longitude and latitude pair. Is there a simgear function to load
the associated .btg.gz terrain file and find the elevation at the given
point? Or should I be looking at flightgear for an example? I'd like
to keep the program quick and simple... Ultimate goal is automated
object placement.

Or am I re-inventing a wheel here?

Thanks,

Ron

[Flightgear-devel] Movie Short - from Aerotro

2007-08-02 Thread Forums Virgin Net
I made another Movie Short, it's using some old video from a few weeks back,
Special effects include daylight (Sky Ilumination) glare, (This adds realism as
if seen through a camera irl) Included is -

Storch2 - L-1011, erobo, DCULP, & AndersG in his fire Truck.

Just a short video, slow paced, Bread would not arrive before going mouldy ;o)
Hence the backing music!

It's good to hear you and your family are OK. I just received word that
my sister and her family (Mpls residents) are fine too.

My wife and I flew on SQ006 through Taiwan not very many cycles before
the day they impacted construction equipment while attempting to take
off on the wrong (closed) runway. Events like these give me pause to
reflect on our mortality.

We've had more than our fair share of tragedies over here in the UK.
It's always a great shock to everyone, but often wrecks the lives of the
survivors and families of those killed and injured.
By all accounts, this bidge was recently certified as structurally
sound. Lets hope lessons are learned and inspections in the future will
be more thorough.
Regards
Sid.

[Flightgear-devel] Minneapolis bridge collapse

2007-08-02 Thread Curtis Olson
I've received numerous emails since yesterday evening just checking in with
me to make sure I and my family are all ok after yesterday's major bridge
collapse in Minneapolis. I want to thank everyone for their concern and let
you all know collectively that I and my family are all ok. So far I haven't
heard of any connections to anyone I know or work with that were hurt. We
share all your concern for those that were directly involved, or hurt, and
for all those with family members or friends that are still unaccounted for.

This bridge is very close to where I work. I take this highway to my
university job every day, coming in from the north side, but I take the last
exit before the bridge. This is a major artery though the city and any time
we go anywhere on the south side of the city, we cross this bridge (i.e.
going to the airport, the mall of america, or other events and activities.)

My wife's cousin also works at the university of minnesota and she drove
over the bridge just 6 minutes before the collapse. I and my family drove
over it the evening before and another of my wife's cousins and his 3 kids
drove over that morning. 2 days before my wife and her running club did a
workout directly under this bridge. Originally their plan was to do this
workout on the day of the collapse and they could have easily been under
there taking advantage of the shade and getting ready to run. So we
consider ourselves very fortunate, but our thoughts and prayers go out for
all those that are more directly involved as well as all the rescue and
recovery workers.

[Flightgear-devel] Aircrafts using JSBSim FDM= c130, f18

2007-08-02 Thread gh.robin

Hello,
We can notice that some aircraft which are using JSBSim FDM could have a
better realistic FDM if they used the FDM data, which are available within
the FG community.

The c130 could use the C130 FDM engine (turboprop engine) and
aerodynamic"C130.xml,v 1.11 2006/05/18 11:53:35 jberndt which are there
available into JSBSim CVS data , mainly the engine which seems to be more
real that the piston engine.

The f18 could use the "FA18 FDM data from Mathias Fröhlich" (if he agree) ,
which are AFAIK the right data.

Because i knows the difficulties to build the FDM (data) of an aircraft, and i
know the pleasure to find "a ready to be used" :) , that is only a
remark, not a complain.

Cheers
