[Flightgear-devel] Proposed new set of splash screens

2010-02-19 Thread Erik Hofman
I've created a new set of splash screens based on the images Durk
created about two weeks ago.
Does anyone have any objections to committing them or does anybody have
other possible splash screens to choose from?

Well to state the obvious: they look very good! But the term freeware will
most probably raise objections. Freeware means free of cost but otherwise
restrictions may apply while FlightGear is really free software with much more
user rights. So maybe you should change that to Free Flight Simulator?

[Flightgear-devel] Negative-drag-bug in 20 aircraft models

2010-02-19 Thread Andreas-Z
Hi everyone!

I think I found a little bug in a couple of JSBSim-aircraft:
The property
/fdm/jsbsim/aero/coefficient/CDde  (Drag_due_to_Elevator_Deflection)

takes negative values when the elevator moves up, so the elevator face is
accelerating the plane.
The wrong code is found in the model.xml file:

    propertyaero/qbar-psf/property
    propertymetrics/Sw-sqft/property
    propertyfcs/elevator-pos-norm/property

fcs/elevator-pos-norm should be turned to an absolute value by abs ..

Here's an example of the bug's effect:
---
When you take the Lockheed1049 and let it fly close to stall speed, yoke
pulled all the way back,
the elevator generates a thrust of 13kN while each of the four engines only
deliver 5kN.
With the bug fixed, the engines are running at 11kN each.

Hi Erik,

I think the proposed splash screens are excellent except for
http://home.telfort.nl/sp004798/emh/Splash3.png

2 things just don't seem right:
1. The rain/snow, which we FG users know is brilliant, might give the
impression of a poor quality picture.

2. Because of the angle the pic was taken from, it looks as if there
is a floating engine in front of the front undercarriage.

Just my personal view, no insult intended.

Best regards,

Yes, you are correct.

There is a property fcs/mag-elevator-pos-rad that gives the absolute
value of the elevator position in radians. I prefer using radian or
degrees for surface positions since they can be adjusted and used in a
more meaningful way.

 Am I right?

Yes, drag is a force parallel to the relative wind (direction of
travel). Having it negative would imply the relative wind is somehow
pulling the aircraft opposite its flow instead of trying to push the
aircraft in the direction of its flow. In mathematical terms
arctan(lift/drag) is always less than +/- 90 degrees.

[Flightgear-devel] variant FDM

2010-02-19 Thread John Denker
I recently discovered that it is possible to fly the C172p
(and presumably lots of other aircraft) using --fdm=ufo.

This has the potential to be very useful, for instance if
you want to pose the aircraft for pictures, and for navaid
flight check missions.

This really ought to be documented.

Conversely the getstart manual ought to document the fact
that in most other cases, a given aircraft cannot be
switched from one FDM to another. The manual says the
FDM is to be chosen at runtime but most combinations
don't work, and most users will give up before they
discover any non-default working combinations.

See also next message.

I am willing to defer to the general consensus, but for me Free Flight
Simulator doesn't quite have the all the right nuances. I still kind of
like natural flying or flying naturally or flying a la natural. :-)

For anyone considering resolution, remember that these are drawn as opengl
textures so the dimensions need to be powers of 2. 512x512 isn't a bad
compromise in terms of space versus resolution. There probably no point in
going larger than 1024x1024.

Curt.

[Flightgear-devel] null-FDM and UFO-FDM instrument outages

2010-02-19 Thread John Denker
Here's a mystery for you: Please take a look at
  http://www.av8n.com/fly/fgfs/img48/null-fdm-instruments.png

Most of the instruments are working, but the rate-of-turn
indicator and the Nav 1 CDI/GS needles are frozen. You
can see from the property browser that the Nav receiver is
properly tuned up and is trying to drive the needles.

This is observed during playback using the null FDM. The
same sort of frozen instruments are observed using the UFO
FDM.

The mystery gets deeper because I also observed that clicking
on the OBS setting knob does successfully rotate the OBS card
on Nav 1.

I have debugged this as far as I can. I'm stuck. I don't
have any good hypotheses as to why some instruments are
working while some parts of other instruments are not
working.

Re: [Flightgear-devel] null-FDM and UFO-FDM instrument outages

2010-02-19 Thread S Andreason
Hi John,

I ran into the same problem with using generic instruments when
developing the bluebird over 2 years ago. Some instruments rely on
properties that are only updated by the FDM, and the ufo doesn't.
So I wrote my own nasal to fill in those gaps, and/or I made my own
instruments by modifying a line or two from the generic version.

In another case, the instrument(s) look to the property
systems/electrical/outputs
and so does not work because the ufo does not have an electrical bus. :)

Another property the ufo fdm does not update is
altitude-agl

etc. etc. So you can't change the FDM and expect everything that rely on
a specific FDM, to keep working.

Another possibility is to keep the fonts and reduce the size a bit and
maybe to fix spaces in F lig htGear by hand?

Thanks, Yves

[Flightgear-devel] Seeking permission -- reuse of SimGear component

2010-02-19 Thread Michael A. K. Gross
Hi folks,
I'm working on a US-government-funded flight planner for a NASA airborne
astronomy mission (SOFIA). Airborne astronomy has worked in true headings
for over 30 years due to ever-antiquated NASA INS systems, but the spec has
recently changed to magnetic. So, I get to code up a magnetic variation
model.
SimGear has one, and it's simpler than anything else out there.
Unfortunately, it claims GPLv2. That would force NASA's hand at releasing
the planner code publicly, not something I can do as a contractor (nor
would it be useful to anyone -- AFAIK, SOFIA is the only airworthy aircraft
in existence that does not fly the wind triangle). So, I seek permission to
use the pair of files coremag.hxx and coremag.cxx without releasing the entire
work.
I would like to modify it to read coefficients from a file, so we can
update it to stay consistent with our FMS, to localize the namespace, and
to excise it from SimGear (no SG #includes). I will ask if I can contribute
this to the SimGear project, but it's not very likely.
Please e-mail in addition to replying to the list.

Much appreciated.

Michael A. K. Gross

Re: [Flightgear-devel] null-FDM and UFO-FDM instrument outages

2010-02-19 Thread John Denker
On 02/19/2010 05:59 PM, S Andreason wrote:

I ran into the same problem with using generic instruments when
developing the bluebird over 2 years ago. Some instruments rely on
properties that are only updated by the FDM, and the ufo doesn't.

That's valuable information. Can you be more specific?

So I wrote my own nasal to fill in those gaps, and/or I made my own
instruments by modifying a line or two from the generic version.

Can you be more specific? What nasal are we talking about?
Which instruments?

In another case, the instrument(s) look to the property
 systems/electrical/outputs
and so does not work because the ufo does not have an electrical bus. :)

That's an interesting hypothesis. However, I see nothing in
vor.xml to support this hypothesis.

There are lots of aircraft with no electrical bus. I would
consider it a bug in the instrument for it to demand an
electrical bus and not implement a reasonable default. This
should be easy to fix. Which instruments are you referring
to?

Another property the ufo fdm does not update is
 altitude-agl

 etc. etc.

Can you be more specific? I'm pretty sure the LOC and GS
needles don't depend on altitude-agl. As far as I can tell,
the only variables the OBS head depends on are being set.
That's why I put up a screen shot including a property
browser window.

So you can't change the FDM and expect everything that rely on
a specific FDM, to keep working.

I'm pretty sure I don't expect that. See my note on the
subject from a couple of hours ago.

However, given that the null fdm is documented to work
(according to README.io and according to getstart.pdf) I
think we should discuss it when it doesn't work, especially
given that it comes so very close to working.

free doesn't necessarily mean open source.

 Just another 2 cents...

I am willing to defer to the general consensus, but for me Free
Flight Simulator doesn't quite have the all the right nuances. I
still kind of like natural flying or flying naturally or flying a la
 natural. :-)

..let's try precision: GPL Flight Simulator ;o)

Cheers,
