Thanks Curt and Phil. After looking around in the view manager and trying many different combinations of XML settings, I finally took the easy way out and changed the airborne clip plane distance in renderer.cxx to 0.5, rather than 10. That solves my problem, but don't know if anyone else

Hmmm, After a few feet of altitude, FG changes the default near clip plane to be further away from the viewer. The 3d aircraft models are drawn with different view parameters so this shouldn't be a problem ... but maybe somehow your 3d model geometry isn't getting configured so it get's
