I tried both the Failsafe and Expert modes.
Still failed.
The Failsafe mode got as far as:
FVS: Mounted root (ext2 filestem), then failed similar to the original
message.
The expert mode ran a bit lomger, then failed after showin some options
which could (supposedly) be accessed with a

First thing to you try, at the boot menu of FGLive, choose
"FlightGear Live | Failsafe mode" and see if it makes a different?

Just an update to this problem.
I contacted DELL and upgraded the BIOS to:
BIOS Version/Date Dell Inc. 2.5.1, 8/9/2007
This did not solve the problem on this machine.
The developers may want to know of this, as it's the latest bios for these
machines here.

I still would go to the Dell web site and check out BIOS updates available
for your model and BIOS version.

The machine is running windows xp .
(The other machine (that works) is running windows 2000).
I'm not sure how to go about upgrading the bios.
The error message shown included:

What OS? There is a known problem with Dell BIOS and Vista. I would
upgrade the BIOS,
