Re: User Interface Options - Comic Sans Font Preference

2018-04-10 Thread Justin Obara
Hi Steve,

Thanks for the feedback. Falling back to chalkboard or something like that
is an option. It would provide a font that has a similar appearance.

Part of the issue though is that we do not know why a user chose a specific
font. Is it easier read, is it emotionally gratifying, etc. So a fallback
to chalkboard may satisfy the latter but not the former. I found
https://www.dailydot.com/via/iso-9-san-francisco-font/ to be an interesting
read about Apple’s San Francisco font. It’s the default system font on
recent iOS and macOS systems and is hopefully both attractive and readable.
So potentially a fall back to San Francisco might be a more readable
option, but would look nothing like comic sans.

A future looking option may be to allow the user to select the system font;
however, this isn’t so straight forward to do at the moment, but there has
been a request to add “system” as generic font name to pick up the systems
font.

Thanks
Justin

Well i decided to use this fallback for iOS

but have not evidence either fonts are particularly suitable. Ditto
OpenDyslexic

RE: User Interface Options - Comic Sans Font Preference

2018-04-10 Thread Harnum, Alan
Hi Eloisa,

Thanks for starting this conversation - the question of typographic usability
is a very large one, and I would contend we’re in a better position to support
the idea of users making the choice that feels right for them then to try and
suggest “best” options.

A +1 to having some improved documentation on customizing the font choices when
deploying UIO – this might be most easily demonstrated with demo code similar
to what we did for multilingual UIO
(https://github.com/waharnum/uio-multilingual).

Subject: User Interface Options - Comic Sans Font Preference

Hello everyone,

We have an open JIRA here https://issues.fluidproject.org/browse/FLUID-5525 for
replacing the Comic Sans font in UIO with OpenDyslexic. Originally, we thought
of Comic Sans as a friendlier alternative for those with language-based reading
limitations such as dyslexia, but what we didn’t realise was that anyone could
choose Comic Sans for any reason and I think the power of UIO (and correct me
if I’m wrong) lies in allowing the user to choose their own preferences
regardless of any reasons they may or may not have.

However, not all platforms do not or no longer natively support Comic Sans, so
we have the dilemma of finding a fall back font for it on systems such as iOS.
Would anyone have thoughts on possible options, potential fonts, or any
suggestions in general on how we can address this issue?

That being said, we think it would now also be of use to not necessarily
replace Comic Sans, but to add OpenDyslexic as a font preference to target that
specific concern as well. There was also a suggestion to be able to easily
customise UIO to change, add, or remove the fonts. Does anyone have thoughts on
this?

We gladly welcome your input!

Thank you!
