i got a virus from a file heiko sent (hopefully unwittingly)
i managed to clean my computer and according to all test, i'm virus free
however,
i have lost all my jpeg/jpg files and several mp3s due to the virus
overwriting them as .vbs files
i have lost a lot (i mean a really big lot) of work.

I fear that you cannot retrieve your mp3s etc. I had a similar experience
with a brand new seagate scsi hd. Just after I had moved 1 GB of files to
it, it went nirvana. One year of musicmaking etc was gone, only very few
things on floppies.

First of all I deleted Heiko's attachment without opening it and I do this
with any attachment I receive that I consider suspicious. The suspicious
part was the .jpg.vbs extension that the file had..no normal file would have
2 extensions. I assumed others had done likewise. In future if you're
I use Kasperky Lab's AVP (anit viral protection) software. I got it after
I heard John C Dvorak (big PC expert) say that's what he uses. It picked
out Heiko's little email attachment and immediately warned
