NEPTUNE is a band from Boston that began in 1996 as a sculpture project. Neptune plays large menacing instruments that have evident histories such as saw blades, bike parts and oil drums. Each instrument, including guitar bass and drum is sculpted from waste by band member Jason Sanford. Neptune plays loud noisy art punk that you can almost dance to. They have recorded several albums, toured throughout the United States and exhibited instruments in galleries.

CRISPIN WEBB uses appropriated electronics, the nostalgic history of found objects, and fabricated switches to create interactive sound sculptures. He is currently undergoing a Masters in Sculpture at the Bard MFA program.

Project statement
There is an alchemical process that takes place when waste is converted into something useful. REFUSE is a collection of work by artists who apply this process to castaway raw materials reshaped into functional art objects and sound sculptures. The exhibit will include pieces whose emphasis is on form and function, making scavenged material an integral, possibly unapparent element of the work through skilled transmutation. An apparent dwelling space within the gallery will be assembled with pieces ranging from dresses woven from cassette tape ribbon (Alyce Santoro), a chair reupholstered with woven blue new york times bags (Sarah Hollis Perry), chairs fashioned from recycled road signs (Boris Bally) and tables crafted from scrap wood (Scrapile). Several Interactive sound sculptures and musical instruments made from waste will be placed throughout the gallery providing a sonic backdrop for the space. ---End Message---

RE: FLUXLIST: Cleaner throws out bag of trash in artwork

2004-08-28 Thread David-Baptiste Chirot

Well--isn't it poetic justice that that which poses as trash in order to be art--be tossed out as trash through too artfully posing as trash?
In the early hey days of various forms of conceptualism, my brother and i went to a gallery show in Toronto--all all sorts of installations, objects, etc--which looked just like the actual things, but weren't--they were art, because someone had said so--there were lenghty accompanying texts, often larger than the objects themselves, which theoretically proved that everything that was said to be was truly so--the anceint hoary with myth homage to legacy of Duchamp's toilet bowl and shovel. There wre light switches which didn't turn things on, a tv which didnt receive channels but showed tapes of channels, etc etc. (I wondered if the toilets would flush or not.)
There was also a fire alarm--what the heck--is it art or non-art--i.e. the blunt intrusion of a non-theoretical object, the contemptuously regarded/discarded "real" thing--sure enough! we pulled it and everyone began evacuating the premises! My brother had the presence of mind to suggest we stay and enjoy the buffet and swipe all the liquor--expensive non-art booze of all sorts, a regular rogues gallery of "top shelf" "acquisitions"!
In other words, you could say we "cleaned up"!
Last night a friend of mine gave me an old t-shirt with a stick figure carrying a bag--it reads: TODAY WAS TRASH DAY"--
"refuse/refuse"--david-bc

Hi Cecil

Well this came through on the Fluxlist okay. I'm not the person to ask
about the technical side of the list.

The Blog piece was Allanq's. Made by visiting blogs and finding little
seams of... well, not gold exactly.

It's possible to construct group blogs.
How about we make a group blog.
People sign in under assumed names (I might be Shirley for example)
Then the blog you write must be mined a la Alqlan -

Kill me, now. Our dogs are hanging out outside. Or forever hold your
 nuts in
a blender. I have finally and thankfully come to the conclusion I am a
 lil
gay boy in a lil girls body. I have a friend Jane, who is single and
 lives
alone. She has multiple health problems. Well, we're at the YMCA on
base
 and
talking to people about God and musicial talents. Sometimes Jane
 struggles
with insecurity and depression. Thoughts of suicide cross her mind.

One time when she was feeling this way, she prayed for help but none
 came.
I helped Mike with his e-mail, that was cool. Saturday night I had a
 rather
interesting dream. In it, I was with some sort of group, I had the
sense
that we were missionaries and probably on some sort of mission. We
also
 had
some leaders and I got kind a Baptisty vibe off of them. We were
 issued
 weapons by these men, AK-47s.

The urge to commit suicide passed but afterwards, she wondered why God
hadn't sent help. Then one day after talking to Suzanne, a friend from
church, she found that Suzanne had received a prompting the day she
had
prayed for help. The Ak-47 is the most popular weapon in the world and
 it's
not the best but it's not a bad gun either. She had felt that she
should
call Jane but sadly hadn't followed through on it.

According to Mike's bible study Tuesday, people are treating the
gospel
 like
their low-carb diets. The idea is to slim down. Well that's ok for the
 body
but not for the spirit. God gave him a real good analogy. Dan is
 working.
