I do not know about the future of the TXTRenderer. But I do know a little
bit about it's past.
The overwrite problem occurs because the TXTRenderer attempts to match the
positioning/layout of the PDF/PCL Renderers. Unfortunately plain text of
course does not have precise line positioning.

Just to back Jeremias up, I believe that his answer is correct.
First thing to do is to print the font list for your printer. This should
(at least most PCL printers do) give the control codes to invoke the font.

I was I think the most clamorous about moving from 1.1 to 1.2. After far too
long we were able to move to 1.3. I agree that 1.2 to 1.3 is not such a big
deal. Off hand I do not know of any platforms that support 1.2 but not 1.3.
