since no one on the fop-user list seems to have a clue im reposting my
question on fop-dev:
i played a little bit with the orphan and widow attribute in
fo:simple-page-master ..orphans=3 widows=3
and also in the flow and block elements
but it seems to have no effect.
is this feature

The fo:external-graphic can only have data from a url specified in the src
element, so unless you somehow make a url to your database you cannot use
this element.
An alternative would be to use svg. The svg image supports inline data
(encoded as base64).

not working perfect, i wonder whether there is a possiblility to define
exceptions:

Currently none of those are implemented.
The only one that is relevent to the xsl-fo spec is title which is
currently not implemented.
The other document properties could be done by using an extension similair
to the one available for bookmarks.

convert XML input to PDF output (via an XSL) on the fly in a browser.
Recently, I was using Stylus Studio to build an XSL with FO tags and then
rendered it into PDF (inside Stylus). At this point I realized maybe I do
