Simon,

I agree that we use hyphens in a wrong way. It is apparently sloppyness in
using the minus ("-") key instead of distinguishing between the hyphen
variants.

I removed such stand alone hyphens but the problems remains. As far as I can
see there are stand alone hyphes generated by the docbook xsl that we use.

Nevertheless I think "reliable programs never crash" should apply here
anyway...
I'll try the latest revision.

This problem was recently solved in revision 1042115.

The problem is revealed by the fact that your manual uses words that consist of
a single soft hyphen. In my view that is an error in your manual; one should
use an em dash or an en dash in these places. As a bonus, that would work
around the problem you report here.

If you cannot change that, you can use a recent version of fop from subversion,
see http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/fop/download.html, or apply the patch in
revision 1042115 yourself.
