Today I bought O'Reillys XSL - FO book written by dave pawson. I think this book answer me quite a lot of questions, so I don't have to post the question here. Then, run each of the FOP examples in the examples/fo directory of the FOP distribution. Take notes on what you can use for your own work--look at the underlying code. Although in a ruder tense than I would use, I think Michael Kay's recent advice for an XSLT newbie [1] may be relevant here. Learn a bit more before you start working!
