Determining table column count

I'm creating a table with a dynamic number of columns and at the top of the table there is a row with a comment on the right hand side. If I specify number-columns-spanned to a value larger than the number of columns then it throws an exception. Basically I have an XML file with all the columns

bigger (about 20% or so) than the original and it looks jagged. Is there anything I can do about this? I've tried specifying its size based upon the its dimensions but this makes no difference. Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks Richard Sweeney
