This has driven me crazy, but I eventually found out that the problem is the Crimson parser! I don't know why, but Crimson goes wrong on RedHat 7.3. If I explicitly set the XMLReader to org.apache.xerces.parsers.SAXParser, then it works. what is the encoding you use on the machines?
