Yes, my point was that I think we could take http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/c/coreutils/current/copyright as a base and adjust what's relevant for dc3dd code. -mika- ___ forensics-devel mailing list forensics-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/forensics-devel
Re: dc3dd copyright
I'm not sure the exact context of the discussion or how things are normally handled in Debian, but do keep in mind that licenses do not equate to copyrights. Just because someone happens to license a patch against my project under the same license that I'm using doesn't mean that I own their code. They still own that code and happened to license it to me to include it in the project. Ideally, all contributions should be attributed to the respective copyright holders. In practice it's rediculously difficult to break out line by line who added what, so most of the time people do it file-by-file, at least noting who touched it. At the end of the day, if a project needs to defend it's copyrights against someone who is abusing the code, having a long list of names makes any legal challenges against the code base more difficult for an adversary. Of course, Debian maintainers shouldn't have to go to great lengths to keep track of this stuff. The upstream people should be encouraged to make proper attributions clear in their projects... tim ___ forensics-devel mailing list forensics-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/forensics-devel

How about taking the approach from the gnu coreutils package: http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/c/coreutils/current/copyright ? They list the licenses of all the files but only if they are different from the "generic" one (see 'all other files' in the copyright file). IMHO we should just take the copyright information upstream of dc3dd decided to specify. -mika- ___ forensics-devel mailing list forensics-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/forensics-devel
dc3dd copyright
Here is a summary of the situation. dc3dd is a patched version of gnu/dd from the gnu coreutils package. dc3dd uses a lot of files from the coreutils package and some of them maybe useless for dc3dd. I tried hard to figure out what files are useless but I failed. So I need to mention in the debian/copyright file all the authors of coreutils files that are used in dc3dd. In some cases, it's simple. For example, there are 324 files out of 447 in lib/ that are the same in coreutils and dc3dd. But it left 123 files that I need to figure out if they are patched from coreutils or the work of dc3dd author only. My question is about the first case. If a file is a patched version of a coreutils file, should I mention the dc3dd author in the Debian copyright file, or the coreutils autho, or both ? -- Christophe Monniez Belgian Federal Computer Crime Unit ___ forensics-devel mailing list forensics-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org http://lists.alioth.debian.org/mailman/listinfo/forensics-devel
