Upcoming GNOME Foundation IRC Meeting: March 23rd, 2011

2011-03-15 Thread Og Maciel
Howdy fellow GNOMErs!

I’d like to invite you all to join us once again for another GNOME
Foundation IRC Meeting!

When: Wednesday, March 23rd, from 14:00 to 15:00 UTC (your local time)
Where: irc.gnome.org, #foundation

Foundation IRC meetings are just that, meetings held on #foundation in
irc.gimp.org to discuss current matters related to the GNOME
Foundation. Any GNOME Foundation member or non member are welcome. As
long as you contribute positively to the discussion you are welcome.

The meeting is moderated by Board members that are present, and they
will guide the discussion through all the Agenda topics. Everyone can
comment and speak at any time, just remember to be respectful and
concise so it’s easy for everyone to follow the discussion.

Tthis is a great opportunity to discuss the topics you care about, or
to get more information from the Board if you think we’re not
communicating enough on some topics The agenda of the meeting is
really up to you!

So please add the agenda items you’d like to discuss to
http://live.gnome.org/FoundationBoard/MembersAgenda

Your topics will automatically appear on the meeting page:
http://live.gnome.org/FoundationBoard/MeetingAgenda

For reference, the minutes of the last meeting are available at:
http://live.gnome.org/FoundationBoard/Minutes/

Thanks,

Og Maciel, on behalf of the GNOME Board of Directors

Re: Wiki text licensing

2011-03-15 Thread Richard Stallman
It is best to ask the SFLC lawyers for advice on how to go about
asking contributors to relicense. I think it is not terribly hard.

Please use a dual license, GFDL | CC-BY-SA, for the Wiki text. It is
important to be compatible with the GNU standard licensing practice.

(I changed the Subject because I recommend that we not describe
potentially useful works of software documentation works as "content".
That term denigrates the works.

See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/words-to-avoid.html@Content for the
reason.)

It was discussed, but Rosanna's laptop died some time ago, and we cannot
wait on donations to replace it. She's currently having to use a
personal netbook, which is far from ideal for the work she does.

While I'm sure it's not likely anyone would mind, it's really how the
laws work. We cannot assume that not voicing an objection is the same
as actively agreeing. Licenses to be valid have to be granted by the
actual copyright holders :(

While I don't wish to ride slipshod over copyright law, I think you're
over-thinking this. We can cover >90% of the contributors with one mail
to f-l, and unless anyone objects to the licence change, Just Do It.

If someone objects, then we need to either remove or re-write the
content they contributed.

If after the relicencing someone comes out of the woodwork to object,
then we can rewrite or remove their contribution, or convince them to
relicence.

Since most of the content of the site is being rewritten or edited, and
I believe that everyone (including myself) who has contributed content
to gnome.org did so on the understanding that the content was being
given to the project, I do not think that in practice we will have any
issues.

Cheers,
Dave.

Have you considered asking one of our advisory board partners to donate
a laptop for the Executive Director? I believe that Tim Ney's laptop was
donated in the past.

Cheers,
Dave.
