This is not censorship. We're not restricting anybody's ideas here.
This is just enforcing the rules of the list. The subsequent
responses after Richard's are from those who are upset that rules are
not being followed. There is a certain tolerance when people do that,
but when it is consistent over a period of years. Tolerance erodes
quickly and when not resolved, people leave the list.

Please. No more replies to this thread. I have already invited the
original poster to talk with the board after he initially posted and
we have an active conversation already. The matter is being resolved
at the right level.

Richard, in the future, please reply off-list if you want to correct
someone on the usage of GNU/Linux. We are already a GNU project, most
of us already know all this. You're de-railing a useful conversation
with what other people consider to be noise.

Please respect the rules of this list and stay true to the topic on
the subject. Everyone else here is respecting the rules. You need to
as well.

Let's be real: this is pure drama and it is more than slightly ironic that
the original topic of this thread has been completely derailed by those
seeking to censor "off-topic" discussion...

For the record, I agree 100% with the moderators - that censorship of any
card carrying member would be totally unacceptable (especially on this
list).

If RMS were to say, for example, "Here's where you can find information
about using the GNOME trademark . . . oh, and by the way, please refer
to operating systems that use the Linux kernel as GNU/Linux systems . .
. " I don't think there's anyone on this list who would take issue with
it.

And if RMS can't contribute meaningfully to the thread, but still wants
to emphasize that people call it "GNU/Linux," I think it's fine for him
to reply off-list to the person who sent the message, and say, "Kindly
call it GNU/Linux." I think we're all okay with that, too. Even if we're
not okay with it, it's RMS' perogative to do so.

Otherwise, this is a forum for discussing matters of the GNOME
Foundation. We join this list to talk about the Foundation, and probably
not to talk about other things. If people repeatedly want to talk about
other things, and not talk about the GNOME Foundation, I think it's
appropriate for list admins to moderate those messages.

Hi Richard,

I agree with the above; it gets annoying for the 99% of us who already
understand your thoughts on the name GNU/Linux. (Same applies for "open
source" vs. "free software.") Maybe you could move these reminders to
your email signature instead, or just reply privately instead of to the
entire list.

Uhm. If the word "censoring" was really used, the person should give
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship a read because asking people to
stick to the topic has nothing to do with censorship.

This mailing list has a scope what it's meant to be used for.
https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/foundation-list says:
"discussion relating to the GNOME Foundation as an organization [...]
You can post questions/queries about it's administration, activities,
events/conferences that concern it (that is, where GNOME is involved or
being promoted) and related matters."

"related matters" to me does not cover repetitive "You missed the GNU/
prefix in front of the word Linux no matter what the original topic of
your posting was" postings.

To make this clear: It's right and good if we discuss e.g. conference
materials and point out that the terms FLOSS or FOSS are way more
correct to use than OSS on such materials in order to not exclude
allies / contributors / members of (sub)communities etc.
But I'm getting pretty bored and annoyed by erosion of actual thread
topics by preaching to the choir on word choices as nearly everybody on
this mailing list is already in the choir.

That is disappointing to hear, but given the above answer I'm also going
to unsubscribe from this list to improve the signal/noise ratio of my
inbox if there is really no interest in making sure that this list is
used for discussing topics that are covered by the list's scope.

I've had a rather short discussion with the list moderators, and, when
I mentioned that we should filter out mails containing clippy-style "I
think you mean GNU/Linux", I was told:

I would argue that one's freedom stops where other people's start. I
shouldn't have to put with this type of trolling on GNOME lists.

So I'm leaving this list.

Yeah, but you are the only person on this list constantly requesting to
please put a "GNU/" prefix in front of the word "Linux" no matter what
the actual topic of the corresponding thread is, creating uninteresting
noise for basically everybody on this mailing list who know already
anyway except for the original poster and maybe two more folks.
"Unfortunately" your on-topic postings can be quite interesting and
insightful, so I don't want to ignore just all of your emails.

But as you expect others to be highly interested in spelling details
(you are very free to disagree on my choice of words here), you might be
expected to put in the same amount of efforts.

Fedora is a GNU/Linux distribution, so calling it "GNU/Linux" is
appropriate. This will help publicize the GNU system, including GNOME.
