Re: Call for hackfest ideas

2008-04-15 Thread Ghee Teo
While this may not be a hot topic on everyone mind, but that fit the
criteria that Luis
and many others have raised:

- Integrated Printer Management across different print systems via DBUS
interfaces
thus allow different printer management tools to function in across
distros and platforms
(KDE/GNOME). Ideally maintainers for each of the existing printer
management tools
should come together to agree on some standard interfaces and develop
a tool that
  GNOME can bless.

Just my 2 cents,

 Hi,

I guess most people have read various blog posts about how the GTK+
hackfest went, and I've heard there'll be a small report about it too.
But the general feeling seems to be that it was really useful.

One of the things the Board wants to see happen this year is hackfests,
and the fact that the GTK+ one was a success is a good sign that we
should do this :-) But to make this happen, we need help from the
community to come up with ideas of hackfests and we also need help from
 volunteers to lead this effort.

So if you can think of a topic that would be suitable for a hackfest,
please talk about it with a few people and share your idea.

For budget reasons, it'd be better to keep the hackfests small (ie, not
too many people). Note that a good hackfest is not just a good topic:
you need to have the right people and a good agenda so that things
 actually get done.

 Thanks,

 Vincent

Re: On Boston Summit organization and delegation [was Re: A question to candidates]

2007-11-28 Thread Ghee Teo

Part of the issue is the Boston Summit is always in Boston where as
GUADEC can always get fresh enthusiastic teams to help out. This is
because in order to become a host city for GUADEC you already have to
have a team assembled to make and sell a bid. This is helped by the
fact that host cities and organizers often see prestige in hosting
 GUADEC.

Have the board paused and thought why the Summit has to be Boston?
Is it because most hackers work around Boston? May be it was the case.
Is it still true now? Are there other locations that substantial number of
hackers are around?

Just some thoughts :)

Congrats on becoming father third time! Thank you for all the hard work
you put in
as a Board member :)

Does this also implies there is a going to be by-election (first one
ever) :) ?

 Hi all,

As some of you have noticed, I'm not at GUADEC this year. The reason is
a happy one - Anne is going to be giving birth sometime over the next
couple of weeks (I'll keep ye posted).

The combination of the arrival of a third child, and a change in role at
work over the past few weeks, have meant that I've reevaluated the
committment I can make to the board of the foundation. In all honesty, I
can't guarantee that I will be able to do justice to my position as
board member for the second half of the year, a period when the board is
usually more effective than during the first part.

So I prefer to leave my place to someone with more energy ideas, and
to leave the board at a time when I am still relatively happy with how
I've done. I hereby resign my seat on the board.

I have had a great two and a half years on the board, and I'd like to
thank everyone with whom I've served - Owen Taylor, Luis Villa, Jody
Goldberg, Daniel Veillard, Jonathan Blandford, Federico Mena-Quintero,
Tim Ney, Miguel de Icaza, Murray Cumming, Christian Schaller, Jeff
Waugh, Anne Oestergaard, Vincent Untz, Quim Gil, Glynn Foster, Behdad
Esfahbod. Thanks also to everyone who has voted for me through the last
 3 elections.

I'd like to wish all the best to the board for the rest of the year, and
good luck to the person who replaces me.

 Cheers,
 Dave.

Too late, Glynn, you *are* already a rock star :)

I feel there is a subtle distinction missing in the semantics of ROCK: We
have people who are rockstars, and we have people who rock. These are not
 mutually exclusive. :-)

So what are you Jeff, one who rocks or a rockstar?
I am waiting for your submission of candidacy! (After reading your blog

the standard out console message prohibiting its removal.

Interesting suggestion. Could GPL revisions eventually evolved in
such a way
that it loses the 'Free' as in freedom :)
