Re: Candidacy Announcement for the 2007 GNOME Board Election: George Kraft

2007-11-16 Thread Richard Stallman
Heh, then should a question be whether you're a member of the FSF?
Sometimes what is good for the FSF isn't good for GNOME and vice versa.

Neither of those two is the right basis to decide what we should do.

Companies have no goal beyond what is "good for them", so that is what
they aim for. The Free Software Foundation and the GNOME Foundation
should aim beyond that. The FSF aims to promote free software and the
freedoms that it gives to users. I hope members of the GNOME
Foundation board will also aim explicitly for this goal, and proudly
say so. It's not a conflict of interest, because that was the original
purpose of starting GNOME, and should continue to be its goal.

I hope to see candidates that explicitly state their intention to work
to make GNOME a bulwark of freedom, as well as to make it a success.

Should I repost to foundation-list and election with the correction, or

Probably best to request that the membership committee fix it where it is
published as information to eligible voters in the future. You could reply
to the foundation-announce mail with a correction, but it's probably a bit
of overkill.

I imagine that a correction to elections@ is good enough.

Cheers,
Dave.

Sometimes what is good for the FSF isn't good for GNOME and vice versa.

Every affiliation can't be documented, it's simply to numerous to
enumerate. But, work is a major one and I think it should be
identified.

Re: Candidacy Announcement for the 2007 GNOME Board Election: George Kraft

2007-11-15 Thread Richard Stallman
Even if you don't do that right now and was never asked to do, it's not
impossible that you may be pressured to so in the future, which is why
the affiliation is important

A very nasty company, whose internal culture is cynical and has little
idea of loyalty, might put heavy-handed pressure on its employees to
do what they think is wrong. But I think that not many of the
companies involved in GNOME are like that, so I don't expect this to
happen to many board members. A person treated that way might even
quit in defiance.

So I think the principal worry is something less crude and more
subtle. A company that is doesn't put heavy-handed pressure on its
employees can inspire loyalty in them. The employees want the company
to succeed, and they know what is good for it, so they may advocate
the company's interests in the GNOME board, at the expense of the free
software community. They are not pressured; they do this of their own
free will.

Sometimes what is good for a GNOME-using company is also good for the
free software community. Sometimes it isn't. When it isn't, there's
a conflict of interest.

This isn't heavy-handed and ugly, but it is a possible conflict of
interest. I think it would be a good idea to have fewer rather than
more board members with such possible conflicts of interest.

I'm afraid that's still an affiliation...

It's not a matter of "official representation" but of whether your
actions might be skewed in favour of your employer, which is fairly easy
to happen if you depend on them for a living.

Even if you don't do that right now and was never asked to do, it's not
impossible that you may be pressured to so in the future, which is why
the affiliation is important

No director represents their affiliation -- they're elected to represent the
GNOME Foundation membership after all -- but it must be documented (least of
all because of the maximum representation rule).

Hi George,

Great to see you running. So, you are not with IBM anymore? In that
case your Bio page is outdated.
