RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-21 Thread SReames

I had the "Bright Idea" if installing a 3rd workstation as a PC running
NetOP to allow the operators to acknowledge alarms from a downstairs
location in the operating area without returning to the control room.
Worked great, for a while then strange things started happening to the
system. Took us several weeks of addressing the problems before the root
culprit was found to be NetOP. It does work well in the short run, but not
as a full-time connection.

We tested PC Anywhere and found significant stability issues after even a

The TAC folks use NetOp and found it to me much better.

2001-09-19 Thread PMcDermott

Whenever connecting a process control system to a company network, you
should follow the guidelines of your IT folks. If they are clueless when
it comes to process control systems (which many of them are), then you
should talk to the control system vendor to get their recommendations as
the best way to secure your system. Here at Hercules, we have a corporate
standard that any process control system that is connected to a plant
network should be behind a dedicated firewall (the Cisco PIX firewall is a
good low cost solution). This firewall will filter out prying eyes by IP
address. In addition, PC Anywhere (at least versions 9 and 10) has the
option for using PC Anywhere login or NT user login. As with any system,
if they don't have the password, they can't get in. Again your corporate
computer guidelines should say something about passwords.

We use PC Anywhere with a WP70 configured as "be a host". Thus operators
can log in from home when the plant is unattended. As far as I know, PC
Anywhere has worked okay over the last two years I've been working with
I/A.

Application is used at a water treatment facility.

I have a security concern that anyone on our corporate intranet can get
into the WP70 it if they know or accidentally find the TCP/IP address.

PC Anywhere 8.0 can be configured so that the host requires a password
before allowing a session. I'm not how "secure" that connection is, but it
might provide the protection (at least from internal users) that you need.

Re: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread Ron Deen

Hummingbird is just fine, but you need a UNIX system for that to work.
Windows is not capable of remote displaying proces graphics. You can opt
for packages like PCAnywhere or (what we at Foxboro user) NetOp. These
packages "take over" the screen and display this to another Windows
machine. (either simultaniously or on one screen only). Advantage: you
get the same exact screen the operator gets. Disadvantage: you don't
get an additional workplace.

Foxboro has the server 70 solution which will allow for more than one
user connected to a server. This will get you the additional screens you
may want. It is NT though.

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread Johnson, Alex (Foxboro)

50-Series (Solaris) boxes:

All 50-Series based AWs and WPs (Solaris boxes) are X-Windows based.

As a rule of thumb,
* any X-Terminal package for a PC can be made to work and
* Any application that runs on the WP/AW can be seen from a PC.

However, the effort varies with the package. Common issues include:
*   Font management
*   Color palette management
*   Security

Most of this material is covered in the following manuals:
* Display Engineering for 50 Series Workstations (B0193MQ)
*   X Client/Server Support for 50 Series (B0193NV)
* FoxRemote and TCP/IP Network Integration Installation and
Configuration Guide (B0193VR)

Our FoxRemote Product provides a variety of configurations in
support of this type of operation. It includes installation instructions,
supporting scripts, and, in some cases, hardware to fully leverage X-Windows
operation.

Configuration 0 is for desktop operation. Configurations 1, 2, and 3
support dial-up access. Installation support is provided for Configurations
1, 2, and 3 by Field Service. The PSS is:

FoxRemote III - Fast Remote Dial-Up Access for I/A Series
Model 51 (Solaris) Application Workstations and Workstation Processors PSS
21S-7A8 B3

70-Series (WinNT) boxes:

The original MS OSs did not support multiple users per CPU/machine.
In the mid-nineties, Citrix (www.citrix.com )
licensed the source code from MS for WinNT 3.5 Server (not Workstation).

Citrix then enabled the multi-user support that had been written
into the code and enhanced that base to create an OEM product that was sold
to others. This enhanced product allowed multiple users to work on the
machine. It would give the user either his own desktop or a window to an
application, in other words, it gave WinNT 3.5 "X-Window like"
functionality.

Things got interesting when V4.0 of NT was released. MS told Citrix
that they were not licensed to update V4.0. It seems that the OEMs sold
their package for about 5K, Citrix sold it to them for about 3K, and MS sold
it to Citrix for 150 USD.

After some struggles (legal and commercial), MS and Citrix created a
new version of NT called: Windows NT Server: Terminal Server Edition. This
was the first official MS support for multiple users on a machine.

The developers of the 70-Series of equipment had chosen to use WinNT
Workstation as the basis for our offering because of its lower price point.
However, there was no multi-user version of WinNT Workstation. Therefore, we
developed the Server 70 products. There are two: The Server 70 AW and the
Server 70 WP.

The main difference between these and the "regular" AW-70 and WP-70
is that they run WinNT:TSE and can support multiple users.

This is our offering to allow the FV graphics and the Alarm Manager
to be available on the desktop in a similar fashion to what comes on all of
our Solaris boxes.

The PSS sheets for these products are:

PSS 21S-1B4 B3: Server 70 Software Overview Windows NT
Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition
PSS 21H-4U5 B4: Server 70, Style C Windows NT Server 4.0,
Terminal Server Edition

Hope this is useful.

I just bought an additional Hummingbird recently, the cost for a single
seat is $550.00
There are discounts for multiple seats, site licenses etc...
The latest version, works on Windows2000.

Hi Bruce,

Hummingbird eXceed is but one of the possible solutions. We (internal to
Dow
Corning) are required to use SCO XVision, and we get pretty good at making
it work also, without the handholding that Foxboro provides with eXceed.
There are other commercial products for remotely displaying X windows.

VNC (http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/) is a freeware solution. Although
I
haven't run it on a Solaris box, on my Linux boxes at home, it's pretty
doggy slow. (Perhaps I didn't get it tuned properly.)

RE: Remote Displays

2001-09-19 Thread Mark V. Urda

An excellent pure Foxboro solution is to upgrade a WP70 to Server70 WP
version. The Server 70 is a Windows NT Server (Terminal Server Edition) and
allows up to twenty remote clients using office grade PC connected via
ethernnet to display FoxView displays vis either a web browser or terminal
client license. No Foxboro software is required on PCs.

Additional costs associated with approach include Server70 hardware, Server
WP license ,and FoxView licenses.Contact your Foxboro account manager for
specific pricinng info, and request an Advantage upgrade to this state of
the art thin client approach.

I have recently installed Server70, with five additional FoxView licenses
and it works great, and it allows remote display to user via existing plant
LAN. Each remote station can be configured for specific enviroments from
read-only to full WP access.

Exceed will not do the job for 70 series since the FoxView screens are
native(as opposed to X Windows )

Other Options:

- AW70S which is the called server 70 will give you full or read only
remote access.

- We also sell a package that will bring you I/A graphics (70 or 51, DM or
Foxview) on the Intranet for viewing with a browser (internet Explorer or
Netcscape, Windows or Unix).

Let me know If you want more information on this package.

RE: Remote Displays using Exceed

2001-05-03 Thread Stear, Bo

We're not running Windows 2000 but here are some hints
use RLOGIN method
we remove the .profile dm startup from /opt/ia and use it in a command instead so the
command in Xstart for exceed should say:
exec /opt/ia/whateveryounamedthe.profile
The other important setting is in the 'Other' settings where you need to put -1 for
the Close (sed.) timeout.
Hope this helps.

We have been using exceed for years to open remote display managers using
the telnet start method without much for problems. The IT people have been
upgrading the PC's in the plant with new PC's that are running Windows2000
and have been having problems opening a DM after installing exceed. Several
have worked by installing exceed while logged in as Power User, while some
didn't work that way either. The error they get is a "connection closed(3)"
when trying to open a DM. They are able to open a x-window into another
application (a unit optimization program) running on a non Foxboro sun box
without a problem. The new installs are using the same xstart and xconfig
setups as the older installs are using. Does anyone have any ideas on what
may be the conflict here?

Re: Remote Displays using Exceed

2001-05-03 Thread Ron Deen

My experience with Windows 2000 is limited, but the Foxboro box does not really
care too much if you are in the hosts file or not. The DM usage display does not
really know what to show in the field in the display that tells you where the DM
is running.
The go_dm script will find out which IP address is requesting the DM and send it
over.(I works like this in our office where the PC use DHCP and the Foxboro
boxes do not)
The "connection closed" thingy is something else. DM and Foxview do not keep the
connection alive by themselve and for that reason I always set the "close
connection timeout" to "minus one" (-1) in the xstart window. You can find this
setting under the "Other..." button. The default value is 10 sec, you should
change this to "-1" which results in "no timeout"
This should have been a problem before though and you mention you used an xstart
session you have always used?
I'm trying to find the time to install exceed 7.0 in W2K soon. I know I did NOT
see this problem with exceed 6.2 and Windows 2000. Tried the admin account as
well as the operator account I created on the box. No problems with that.
Is the version exceed you are using fit for Windows 2000? I thing exceed 7 is
the first to be native for Windows 2000.

Hope this helps.

RE: Remote Displays using Exceed

2001-05-03 Thread Henrich, Darren

We have been using eXceeds for years now without to many problems. The only
issues we have had, occurred with some changes Hummingbird has implemented
in various software revs. Exceed has been installed on a number of PCs that
have Windows2000 with out any problems and we still use the original xstart
script we developed years ago. If you are getting connection closed it
would indicate a security issue. My first question would be was the IP
address of the PC being upgraded change? If this was a base install versus
and upgrade from NT 4.0 then the IP address might have changed. Does the
site use DHCP or static IP addresses? If static was the same IP address
reassigned to the back to the upgraded PC? Do you use the IP address versus
the domain name for security validation?

There are a number of addition things might effect security but it would be
helpful to get a better understanding in how clients are validated by the
Foxboro Sun boxes.

With Windows 95 we have a problem if the software is installed while a user
is logged into the network, then it only works for that user logged in with
that user name. The solution was to install the software on the PC before
any logins were made - then every user could then have access. Could this
be your problem? Was the software installed under ADMINISTRATOR, but some
else is trying to use it while logged in as XX?

Re: Remote Displays using Exceed

2001-05-03 Thread ODWYER_GABRIEL

Hello Joe, We use exceed on W95. Only the person
logged on during the installation of exceed on a PC can access exceed, subsequent
users who log on are not "registered" for exceed. So we wrote a registry key
script that the user runs (on the PC, just once after the exceed installation) which
sets up the registry.
We use the RLOGIN (TCP/IP) method because we had
similar to yourself way back and that seemed to sort it out.
Is your version of exceed compliant with W2000 ? I
had heard from our IT folks that there were some compatability issues, dont know the
details.
Rgds,
Gabriel.

   Remote Displays using Exceed

We have been using exceed for years to open remote
display managers using
the telnet start method without much for problems.  The IT people have been
upgrading the PC's in the plant with new PC's that are running Windows2000
and have been having problems opening a DM after installing exceed.  Several
have worked by installing exceed while logged in as Power User, while some
didn't work that way either.  The error they get is a "connection
closed(3)"
when trying to open a DM.  They are able to open a x-window into another
application (a unit optimization program) running on a non Foxboro sun box
without a problem.  The new installs are using the same xstart and xconfig
setups as the older installs are using.  Does anyone have any ideas on what
may be the conflict here?

Thank You,

Joe Gale

2001-05-03 Thread jdesaeve

Are you using a fixed IP address on your PC or DHCP ? DHCP ( dynamic host
configuration protocol) can cause the problem.
The /etc/hosts file on the Fox system checks if the IP address is OK .
If OK , it makes the connection with your PC.
