Is there a define to detect if the compiler supports 1,2 byte sets? I could use
something like {$IFNDEF 2_0}{$IFNDEF 2_1}{$IFNDEF 2_2} but maybe there is a
smarter solution.

pre-dated ASM blocks). Computers are so fast today that I wonder if
it is needed; would we want to port the asm or just replace it with
