It seems that the cause of the problem is in the moving a selection: As soon as a group of vertical lines is selected and the group is moved the selection enlarges itself to include the top left corner of the container. See the videos. Further experiments show that this effect requires at least 4 vertical lines. The errors described make it nearly impossible to modify existing diagrams.
