Perfectly possible, Patricia...

The [Thing:zzz], er..., thing puts the 'See also' entry at the end of Thing's

Lots of other permutations are possible.

I'll second Shlomo's recommendation of IndexRef. It
makes the See/See also refs in the index into hyperlinks
within the index, meaning you can use them in Frame as
well as in PDF. And when you convert the Frame files
to Word (or HTML) with Mif2Go, we preserve those links.
Don't know if WWP does too (for HTML), but it should.

If you don't use IndexRef, you get either no links at
all for See/See also, or, worse, links to the place in
the text where you have the marker that created the
entry, a definite huh? moment for your readers.

Fortunately IndexRef is inexpensive, only $25. And
Ian's tech support is very, very good. Like Shlomo's. ;-)

the 2 maker.ini files

2006-04-30 Thread rebecca officer
Hi everyone

I'm confused. If I make a change to the maker.ini file in C:\Program
Files\Adobe\FrameMaker7.0, do I also need to make the same change to the copy
in C:\Documents and Settings\rebeccao\Application Data\Adobe\FrameMaker\7.0?

I read Adobe's tech note http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/327344.html
which suggested I do have to change both, but in the past I haven't. The
changes I've made in the past work, but they aren't in the Documents and
Settings copy. My Documents and Settings copy has far fewer entries in it than
my Program Files copy.

The reason I'm asking is because I want to change the EPSLevelForPlacedPDF and
I won't be able to tell immediately whether that's actually had any effect. :-(

So should I change both, or just ignore the Documents and Settings copy?

Thanks heaps!
Rebecca

I don't have a problem with using a cross-platform PDF as opposed to a
Windows-specific CHM (available previously for the Microsoft Manual of
Style). And I definitely prefer having a "zero-links PDF" than not having
one at all.

I strongly disagree with the approach that effectively says "we'll just
save the manual as PDF and thus we'll have an e-book ready for shipping...
linking is nice to have, but perhaps in a future version".

I had a brief look in the updated Apple style guide. From the linking point
of view, it is in the same class as the Microsoft guide. What could be more
basic in such an "e-book" reference than to have the entries following
"See" and "See slso" properly linked to the target (rather than force you
to locate that target yourself)?

Unfortunately, the "standard" set by the PDFs offered from many major
companies [Adobe included; several entries in the Hmmm corner point to
several PDFs provided with FM/Acrobat products] propagates in all
directions: "if this is good enough for <>, then why couldn't it be
good enough for us"?
