RE: Putting line drawings in a frame doc

These drawing files are imported as Text Insets.

If you're using FM's drawing tools, why not just create the drawings in
the FM doc in which they appear? You can draw in a graphic frame placed
on the page, if you don't want the graphic to flow with the text, or in
an anchored frame if you do. A text inset seems a singularly awkward way
to insert a drawing.

In this way I have NO control over how the drawing appears in
the document flow. If I put the drawing into an anchored
frame, my only choice is run into paragraph which places
the drawing on the left side of the paragraph.

Your only choice? You don't have other Anchoring Position options (Below
Current Line, At Top of Column, At Bottom of Column, etc.) and Alignment
options (Left, Center, Right, etc.) in the Anchored Frame dialog? (And
you can't change the alignment, indents, etc., of the container
paragraph either?)

Either something's wrong with your FM installation or you're doing
something quite odd with this text inset procedure. How are you doing
this? Are you creating the drawing in an anchored frame in the source
file and importing the flow in which it resides into your destination
(main) flow? Or are you importing into a text frame inside an anchored
frame in your destination (main) flow?

Have you tried just creating an anchored frame, playing with the size,
anchoring, and alignment, and then proceeding to draw inside it? I think
whatever's causing your lack of placement control has something to do
with your text inset importing process, and I suggest dumping that.

RE: Tracing the Lineage of Text Insets

2007-11-14 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Checking back on this. It was a fascinating experiment. I was very
impressed with ComboBook's ability to rapidly generate the uber book
from 152 book files scattered amongst subdirectories in a particular
folder. (I created a file list after doing a directory search in
2xExplorer, using that utility's Print List function on the found
results, and tweaking in Excel and Word to get my final text file with
the file list massaged and formatted properly.)

Unfortunately, I came to a screeching halt on the Update Book run to
fill in the LOR when FM said couldn't update this book because it
contains no openable nongenerated files. This is guesswork, but I'm
thinking this book refers to one of the component sub-books of the
uber book. If that's the case, I'm not sure what caused the pause
because Frame appeared to be crunching through several sub-books before
coming to its screeching halt. We still have some FM 5.5 books that
haven't come up for new versions yet and so haven't been converted to FM
7.1. My hunch is that may be the sticky wicket here.

More ideas, thoughts, and interpretations that may lead to completing
this little test are welcome!

 Jim -

You don't need to run the archive plug-in on each book. What you can
do is generate an LOR (List of References) file. Showing text insets
is one of the options you can select when you create that file.
You're still going to have to touch multiple files and/or books, no
 matter what you do.

Depending on how your file are stored, you *could* create a new book
just for this where you copy in all of the files from all of the books

(or folders). Then add an LOR generated file the list.

On the reference page setup, use these building blocks (you can remove

the default pagenum building block if you don't need it).

   $fullfilename -- $referencename

fullfilename = name of the path and container file
referencename = name of the text inset

You will get the full path and file name of the container document,
and then the name of the text inset. Use a tab to divide the two
building blocks so that you can easily convert the text in the
generated list to a table and then sort it by the text inset name.

 Hope this helps.

I don't recall the earlier discussion or know anything about ComboBook,
but your hunch is probably correct. FM can't generate an LOR for a book
if it can't open all the files in the background, without human
intervention. If a file is from an earlier version, or has unavailable
fonts, missing graphics, etc., then human intervention (i.e., your
response to a dialog box) is necessary.

You can avoid this problem by opening all files in the book before
generating the LOR. But for an Ueberbook created from 152 books, this
may be impractical. :-)

FM's error message (or the messages in the Console window) should let
you know what it couldn't open, so you could either temporarily exclude
those files or open just those manually.

Flare v Webworks

2007-11-14 Thread Pat Fortino
Hi,

Sorry if this question has been answered already; I tried to find a place to
search the framer's archive for my questions, but can't find it. Is there a way
to search the archive?

Anyway, I just talked to Webworks about upgrading my Webworks Pro 2003. First
of all, they told me there is no upgrade path; I have to pay full price again,
$1900. And that's only for a specific named user; each extra user is ONLY $900.
Totally rediculous.

Anyway, I am a small company and cannot afford to pay $2000 for an add-on frame
utility that I use only once in a while. Can anyone suggest an alternative. I
once looked into Flare, and they claim Flare can use the frame files as a
source, so I assume I could still single source for print and online help.

Also, I remember a tool called miftogo, but I cannot find anything in google
about where to buy it. Is this company still in business. If so, will it does
what webworks does; eg, convert a frame book to an online help format?

Thanks for any help.

OT: Default postscript level in Adobe Reader 7.0?

2007-11-14 Thread Tammy Van Boening
All,

Posting on behalf of a colleague who is NOT a TW and who works in a
location that has no TWs on site or any support for writing related
issues. When trying to print to any PDF from Adobe Reader (7.0 with all
patches/updates) to an HP printer, supposedly Adobe Reader picks the
correct PostScript level (1, 2, or 3) based on the selected printer. The
default value is PostScript Level 3 in Reader and the automatic
selection of the correct level doesn't fly when the printer is selected.
He has to manually change the postscript level to 2. Is there a way to
set the default level to PostScript Level 2 so that every single time he
prints a PDF he doesn't have to remember to do this? (I have searched
online for answers to this, but the Adobe Reader User's guide just makes
the claim that the Adobe Reader picks the correct PostScript level (1,
2, or 3) based on the selected printer) and numerous bugs/issues around
this problem (in particular, when updating to 8) are all over the adobe
forum.

frame 8 import graphic works differently than 7

2007-11-14 Thread obair81
I find that in frame 8, when I import a tiff that is 5.2 inches wide, the
import dialog does not automatically choose the dpi that preserves the 5.2 inch
width (which happened in frame 7). Instead, it seems that in frame 8 my only
choice is to click custom and guess which dpi is going bring in the 5.2 inch
wide image so that it fits in my 5.2 inch wide table.

Does anyone else see this changed behavior?

Thanks.

Re: Flare v Webworks

2007-11-14 Thread Chris Borokowski
WebWorks does many things well. It has three major downsides:

1. Price
2. Support is OK, but major issues get ignored
3. Documentation gets a 0 out of 10

Other than that, it has many positive interfaces: a very Macintosh-like
intuitive interface, a sensible file layout, a lot of customizability,
and so on.

One question: do you really need to upgrade, or can you modify your old
templates to do what new ones must?

RE: Default postscript level in Adobe Reader 7.0?

2007-11-14 Thread Dov Isaacs
Tammy,

Adobe Reader and Acrobat both select the PostScript language level
based entirely upon the PostScript language level specified in the
device's .PPD (PostScript Printer Definition) file. If your colleague's
printer doesn't work properly with the default PostScript language level
set in the PostScript options in Reader, one of the following is true:

(1) Your colleague's printer driver is setup for the wrong device
model - i.e., setup for a PostScript language level 3 printer model as
opposed to a PostScript language level 2 printer model. Solution is to
delete the PostScript printer driver instance and then install the
driver
for the correct printer model.

(2) Your colleague's printer (a Hewlett-Packard CloneScript device
- the species of which is known to be fairly unreliable) does not
properly
implement one or more PostScript language level 3 constructs although it
doesn't choke on the comparable PostScript language level 2 constructs.
Solution is to manually edit the device's .PPD file to indicate language
level 2 (instead of 3), delete the corresponding .BPD file, and reboot.
The driver will recreate the .BPD from the edited .PPD file.

Hi all, thanks for all the off and on list replies.

I get that I should put the graphics directly into the document in

With respect to text running around a graphic, i.e. the width of the
graphic does not take up the whole width of the page, are there no other
choices but that the graphic is flush left and the text fills in to the
right?

Thanks,

RE: Flare v Webworks

2007-11-14 Thread Jon Harvey
I've been using Flare for a couple of years now--since its first Beta
release. When you create an online Help project from FM files for the
first time, it does take some time to set it up. You have to create
skins, templates, assign styles, etc. The time consumption is not a
limitation of the software, it's just stuff that you have to do. Once
you have it set up, you can make changes to your FM files, reimport, and
create online help pretty quickly. There are some quirks on how Flare
handles TOCs and tables but otherwise, it's pretty good.

 Subject: Flare v Webworks

 Hi,

Sorry if this question has been answered already; I tried to find a
place to search the framer's archive for my questions, but can't find
it. Is there a way to search the archive?

Anyway, I just talked to Webworks about upgrading my Webworks Pro 2003.
First of all, they told me there is no upgrade path; I have to pay full
price again, $1900. And that's only for a specific named user; each
extra user is ONLY $900. Totally rediculous.

Anyway, I am a small company and cannot afford to pay $2000 for an
add-on frame utility that I use only once in a while. Can anyone suggest
an alternative. I once looked into Flare, and they claim Flare can use
the frame files as a source, so I assume I could still single source for
 print and online help.

Also, I remember a tool called miftogo, but I cannot find anything in
google about where to buy it. Is this company still in business. If so,
will it does what webworks does; eg, convert a frame book to an online
 help format?

 Thanks for any help.

Formatting XML and other computer code

2007-11-14 Thread Carol Wade

I'm wondering how other FrameMaker users handle formatting XML and other
computer code samples in text. I have tried a couple of approaches and am not
satisfied with either.

One approach I've taken is to create a paragraph tag that contains regularly
spaced tabs. This requires that I reformat the code when imported into Frame,
which can be labor-intensive.

The other approach I've taken is to take screen shots of the code. Yuck! (for
obvious reasons).

I hope I'm missing something here.

Thanks for your advice!

Modify Framemaker's File (graphic image) import default DPI Settings

2007-11-14 Thread Joan Thomas

Hi all,I know that I can change Framemaker's default line width sizes
that appear in the drawing tool, but can I change the default image DPI
settings that appear when I import a graphic file? The new template set I
am working with only   allows DPI settings which  are not the default ones;
historically, I have always just resized images as needed visually.Am I

RE: Formatting XML and other computer code

2007-11-14 Thread Inbar, Paul
Hi Carol,

Here is what I do, although I don't claim it is the best.

- I have defined a paragraph style that is single spaced and which uses a
mono-space font. It has NO tab stops.

- When I have a code sample, I first paste it into a text editor called
UltraEdit-32, change all the tabs to spaces (UltraEdit has a command for doing
all at once. You can set how many spaces each tab should become). I do this
because when I convert to HTML, I find that tabs are problematic, and that I
don't have control over the length of the tab settings in someone's browser. As
a result, if my code sample has tabs, it is possible that it will look like
sh...well, hell in a browser.

- While in UltraEdit, I also search for smart items such as smart quotes that
might have crept in. This might happen, say, when a developer copies and pastes
some code into a Word document, which you then get as the source material. It
is important to get the smart stuff out if it isn't meant to be there,
because you have to allow for the possibility that a user of your document
might want to cut and paste your example into a program and run it.

- After this, I paste sample into Frame and apply the paragraph format.

Sounds a bit complicated but goes pretty fast once you get used to it.

I too am interested to hear what others do.

Paul

Putting line drawings in a frame doc

If you're using FM's drawing tools, why not just create the drawings in
the FM doc in which they appear? You can draw in a graphic frame placed
on the page, if you don't want the graphic to flow with the text, or in
an anchored frame if you do. A text inset seems a singularly awkward way
to insert a drawing.

> In this way I have NO control over how the drawing appears in

Tracing the Lineage of Text Insets

2007-11-14 Thread Pinkham, Jim
Checking back on this. It was a fascinating experiment. I was very
impressed with ComboBook's ability to rapidly generate the "uber book"
from 152 book files scattered amongst subdirectories in a particular
folder. (I created a file list after doing a directory search in
2xExplorer, using that utility's "Print List" function on the found
results, and tweaking in Excel and Word to get my final text file with
the file list massaged and formatted properly.)

Unfortunately, I came to a screeching halt on the Update Book run to
fill in the LOR when FM said "couldn't update this book because it
contains no openable nongenerated files." This is guesswork, but I'm
thinking "this book" refers to one of the component sub-books of the
"uber book." If that's the case, I'm not sure what caused the pause
because Frame appeared to be crunching through several sub-books before
coming to its screeching halt. We still have some FM 5.5 books that
haven't come up for new versions yet and so haven't been converted to FM
7.1. My hunch is that may be the sticky wicket here.

More ideas, thoughts, and interpretations that may lead to completing
this little test are welcome!

HTH!

Flare v Webworks

2007-11-14 Thread Chris Borokowski
WebWorks does many things well. It has three major downsides:

1. Price
2. Support is OK, but major issues get ignored
3. Documentation gets a 0 out of 10

Other than that, it has many positive interfaces: a very Macintosh-like
intuitive interface, a sensible file layout, a lot of customizability,
and so on.

One question: do you really need to upgrade, or can you modify your old
templates to do what new ones must?

frame 8 import graphic works differently than 7

2007-11-14 Thread obai...@comcast.net
I find that in frame 8, when I import a tiff that is 5.2 inches wide, the
import dialog does not automatically choose the dpi that preserves the 5.2 inch
width (which happened in frame 7). Instead, it seems that in frame 8 my only
choice is to click custom and guess which dpi is going bring in the 5.2 inch
wide image so that it fits in my 5.2 inch wide table.

Does anyone else see this changed behavior?

Thanks.

We are also offering a competitive upgrade for about $400 off the full Flare

still brings you in for much less than WWP.

Default postscript level in Adobe Reader 7.0?

(2) Your colleague's printer (a Hewlett-Packard "CloneScript" device
- the species of which is known to be fairly unreliable) does not
properly
implement one or more PostScript language level 3 constructs although it
doesn't choke on the comparable PostScript language level 2 constructs.
Solution is to manually edit the device's .PPD file to indicate language
level 2 (instead of 3), delete the corresponding .BPD file, and reboot.
The driver will recreate the .BPD from the edited .PPD file.

Putting line drawings in a frame doc (new question)

2007-11-14 Thread Theresa de Valence
Hi all, thanks for all the off and on list replies.

I get that I should put the graphics directly into the document in
question in an anchored frame, not as an anchored frame inside a text
inset. Will do herewith.

With respect to text running around a graphic, i.e. the width of the
graphic does not take up the whole width of the page, are there no other
choices but that the graphic is flush left and the text fills in to the
right?

Thanks,
Theresa

Flare v Webworks

Flare v Webworks

2007-11-14 Thread Art Campbell
I'd second the recommendation for MIF2Go, while pointing out that it
can output to many more formats, some of which might give a small
company some new formats to provide...

The new template set I
am working with only   allows DPI settings which  are not the default ones;
historically, I have always just resized images as needed visually.Am I
dreaming?Thanks! joan
