Re: PDF Generation question

2006-05-24 Thread Tammy . VanBoening
Terry, David, Lin, Fred, Harro, Darrel, Daniel, et. al. (too many names to
mention) -

Thanks for all of your replies and input and suggestions. Sorry Steve,
squinting and looking sideways at the bookmarks didn't help~ Two issues -

1.) One was the flow in Chapter 7 - which was weird because I simply
imported the page layout/paragraph tags from my template into Chapter 7
(like I did for all other chapters), but somehow, the flow was
disconnected in Chapter 7.
2.) However, since the generated TOC was working just fine (which would
indicate that there was NOT a problem with the flow), I also received
advice about optimizing the framemaker file for PDF Generation (Format
Document Optimize PDF Size) and work with both options there - kinda'
like miffing a source file except your miffing for PDF generation.

Now, all is right in my PDF world and I get the bookmarks as expected.

PDF Generation question

Framemaker 7.1, Windows XP, Adobe Acrobat 7.0.

In my Framemaker source files, I have the following tags set to appear in
my TOC: ChapTitle, SecTitle, Head1, Head2, Head3, and Head4. All tags
appear as expected with the proper indentations, in the proper order, and

with all links working in the TOC. Only one chapter (Chapter 7) uses the
SecTitle tag; however, as noted, it appears as expected in the TOC with
the proper numbering (SecID), in the proper order, and the links from
SecTitleTOC work just fine. When I generate my PDF from this file,
however, this is a different story.

I do have the following:

Printer: Adobe PDF
Under PDF Setup, I have Generate Bookmarks checked. In the Include
Paragraphs, I do have these tags: ChapTitle, SecTitle, Head1, Head2,
Head3, and Head4 and I have Include Paragraphs Tags in bookmark text
selected (for troublshooting purposes). I also have Create Named
Destinations Set under Links and I have confirmed that the chapter-level
PDF settings are the same as the book.

When I generate the PDF from the FM source file, I get the bookmark for
ChapTitle for Chap 7 appearing; however, the other bookmarks that should
appear underneath (SecTitle, Head1, etc.) are appearing underneath Chapter

6 - In other words, the top level SecTitles (with all of the Head1, Head2

below collapsed) are appearing in order, but as the last tags beneath
Chapter 6.

Like I said, Chap 7 is the chapter that uses the SecTitle paragraph, so
why are these bookmarks being placed under Chapter 6?

Thanks,

TVB

anchored frame import defaults

Is there a way to set the anchored frame import defaults?

For example, I want:

but each time I import a file (image) by reference, I have to change the
anchored frame settings to what I want.

Thanks.

I usually copy and paste an anchored frame that already has the

Conditional Text and Numbering

2006-05-24 Thread Ariel Kahana
I am using Framemaker 7.2 on a Win XP SP2 platform. I have limited
experience with conditional text and have to maintain a user guide for two
rather similar products. I have been able designate text conditional. My
only problem has been to designate graphic captions as conditional. My
graphic captions paragraph style contains an automatically generated
numbering scheme. When I set a graphic and caption as conditional, the
graphic (frame) and the caption title disappear. However the graphic number
(Figure X.X) does not. How can I use conditional text to eliminate the
graphic caption and maintain my numbering scheme?

Any clues who be appreciated,

Thanks in advance,

RE: How to fix broken links/references. FM crashed again.

2006-05-24 Thread Nandini Garud
Thank you very much for your suggestions, Fred, Art, and Anne.

Fred, you are right about problems moving in Windows 2000. I have one new
folder, on network drive F (this is part of problem) which contains files
moved from the old folder in Windows 2000. I did not move them from
FrameMaker 7.2 with save as, but in Windows Explorer, grabbed each file
and dropped it in the new folder along with the graphics folder. The
graphics are looking to this new folder location after showing correct
position for first few graphics.
Art, thanks for suggesting the Archive utility. According to the owner, it
won't work with the broken references. It will only put all connected book
files and graphics in one place.
Anne, the idea to rename the folder is excellent, the support guy at Adobe
told me it won't work because the files in the book look to the original
folder. Apparently, they are not fooled by this trick!
I did download and install the patch to 7.2: FM7.2b158. That updated book
successfully with about 95 missing fonts messages. But the
cross-references did not crop up because I had deselected the option to
update them while chatting with support from Adobe.
However, the files which I still have the same names as those in the old
folder AND for version 4 (this is version 5), are referring to the old
folder, even after I go to references, and point them to the new location. I
have renamed the files saved in the C folder while saving them from open
FrameMaker files individually. When opened, they each have 5 - 16 missing
cross-references. Apparently, they are looking at the new folder on the F
drive. I have no guarantee that after fixing these references they will
behave.

My actions to troubleshoot:

1. Created a new folder for the book files and graphics in the local drive
C.
2. Went to Drive F, opened the working book. Opened all files. Saved them
with save as on Local Drive C, in a new folder along with the Graphics
folder.
3. Created a new book, added all files in the C drive book folder in the
book. Opened the book and all files. Tried to update book. No missing
cross-references message generated. About 100 missing fonts messages
generated. Tried to print book to PDF, no result. PDF of fonts messages
worked ok. However, when checked individual files, have missing references.
Why they do not show up while updating book, is a mystery. The TOC, Index do
not get updated either. So looks like the book is not getting updated, nor
is it generating missing cross references.
4. When I update the book by choosing update cross references option alone,
only missing fonts messages come up. We can buy new fonts, but doesn't
FrameMaker give these messages regularly? Times, Times Bold, Times Italic,
Times Bold Italic Zapdingbats, Helvetica Oblique, Helvetica Helvetica Bold
Oblique, Avant-Garde DemiBold Fonts are not available.
5. Updated all cross-references to look at the C folder renamed files.

Should I expect the book to behave? I really appreciate this. The paid for
support did not come up with these great suggestions.

Nandini

P.S. After trying to update the book, gave messages about 7204, 6109922,
7778420, 0. Instruction at 0x0025199f referenced memory at 0x...
memory cannot be read. Had to quit program.

Only those files for which I had fixed cross-references and the Index and
TOC generated recover files in an earlier crash, while the fixed files and
Index generated auto (save every x minutes is not selected) files in the
second crash. After the crash, all the cross-references reverted to the
broken state.

P.S. After trying to update the book, gave messages about 7204, 6109922,
7778420, 0. Instruction at 0x0025199f referenced memory at 0x...
memory cannot be read. Had to quit program.

Only those files for which I had fixed cross-references and the Index and
TOC generated "recover" files in an earlier crash, while the fixed files and
Index generated "auto" ("save every x minutes" is not selected) files in the
second crash. After the crash, all the cross-references reverted to the
broken state.
