As of tonight (June 19th), the HP Compaq web site still lists their
top-end notebooks with Vista downgrade to Windows XP as an optional OS.

My HP/Compaq nw8000 has given excellent service. The HP Compaq 8710w
available now is a relatively costly computer but inexpensive when
you consider its value with respect to salaries and time.

Whatever you do, don't fall into the trap of buying a Windows-based
laptop with VISTA installed on it, hoping to *upgrade* to Windows
XP. In some cases, this is possible, but look into it first. With
brand new hardware designed for VISTA, you may not be able to find
XP-suitable drivers. Your best best (in the Windows arena) is to get
one originally designed for XP, assuming of course that you choose
to avoid VISTA.

Re: How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

2008-06-20 Thread Rene Stephenson
I know what you mean. My largest client's IT UBER-POLICY steers way too many
decisions in my home computing due to our client relationship. If I had *time*
to do it, I'd go pick up all the networking and Cisco certs I could get my
hands on, just so that I could get this stuff jiving the way I need it to work.
They're rolling out Office 2007 on site, and most of the workers initially
gripe about the interface but then find that it's more like hopping into a tub
of hot water: if you sit there long enough, it doesn't *feel* hot anymore.

When I was helping my manager at that site configure his user interface, I saw
a setting to use the classic office menus rather than the 2007 ribbon
menus, and using that setting plus changing his default file type for save
operations has helped him a lot. Me? Oh, I bought Office 2007 when I could get
it from a friend as an OEM offering, loving the discount. Of course, now I find
out that OEM means you can't ever upgrade that copy, so I'm starting to feel
like I got taken, but hey, it's buyer beware, I guess.

It's hard to figure out what's really going to work for me from a cost and
productivity standpoint with so many variables and dependencies in play,
knowing that the wrong decision would be a permanent pain in the kiester.

Re: degree symbol

2008-06-20 Thread Rene Stephenson
Wow, where to start...(inserting tongue in cheek). Help's help isn't helpful
because:

1. The help author got boxed into using PDF output to try to
demonstrate the power of PDF, when in reality it just reveals the extent of
its limitations when you try to make a purse from a sow's ear.
2. The help author had too short of a timeline or too many overlapping
deadlines or lack of access to the product in enough time to create the help
content in time for delivery by frozen load deadline, because you can always do
the same amount of work with fewer resources and never lose anything in the
deliverable.

3. Perhaps the help author isn't a technical writer who has been
trained in usability, audience analysis, etc., because anyone can write and
anyone who can grasp technology and put together an email must be qualified to
be a technical writer.

4. The help author's boss is more interested in saying yes to the
project manager and product manager than in trusting what the qualified,
well-trained, and seasoned help author advised would be the end result for the
customer/user.

Import Formats - Document Properties List

2008-06-20 Thread Jeff Schweiner
Hi,

I'm looking for a complete list of what gets imported when doing a File -
Import - Formats - Document Properties.

I'm running FM8 Windows. I looked at the FM8 User Guide, but I don't believe
the list provided on page 417 is complete. For example, information set under
File - File Info gets imported, but is not listed in the User Guide.

Thanks in advance,

The only item I can attribute this to is the fact that adobe converts

Why the mystery wrap?
How to change all the fonts in every style to Arial in one fell swoop?

Dov,

Thank you for taking the time to write your e-mails to the Framers E-Mail
List. Your insight and helpfulness is always greatly appreciated.

Your comment, Large enterprises are notoriously slow in changing their
standard software configurations certainly hits home with me. As a
manager in a large enterprise, I've been trying to upgrade from FrameMaker
6 for years now. Sometimes I think we will never upgrade, no matter how
well I present my arguments to do so. It all boils down to money and
customer satisfaction. My customers are very happy with my manuals, and
upper management is loathe to spend money to improve a process that
currently works very well.

Obviously, you are a tremendous proposal writer. How you justified the
computer system you use (and a 30 monitor no less) is nothing short of
amazing to me. If I were to put in a request for such a system, I probably
could hear my IS department laughing even though we are at opposite ends
of the building.

Again, thank you for taking the time to monitor and respond to the Framers

FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and ...lost image data

2008-06-20 Thread Brian Weis
Hi folks:

Yesterday, I encountered this error in FM: An internal error occurred
while writing imported graphics in this document. The file has been saved,
but has lost some image data. Please report this error to Adobe Technical
Support.

I close the error dialog, and then try to close the file ... but I am
prompted once again to save it before closing. I am now in a loop until I
break the cycle by clicking No in the save prompt. Contrary to the error
message's statement that the file has been saved, I find that none of my
changes, text or otherwise, are in the file. With a little more work, I am
able to determine that a Visio object must be the culprit.

How do I know this?

In the directory where my source Frame doc is located, I see a set of
garbage files -- that is, files that my system does not recognize by
filename extension. I recognize them as copies of my source doc ... but with
different extensions (e.g., .BE7, .75F). These files have date/time stamps
right around the time I was trying to save my changes. Right clicking on one
of these files, and specifying FrameMaker to open it, I find a version of my
document with the most recent set of changes ... but the Visio object is now
grayed out in its inline frame.

Just to be clear, I am using Visio object to refer to an graphic that I
have inserted by copying the elements from the original Visio drawing and
then pasting them into an inline frame in FrameMaker. I did not use the
Import File option.

I did some more testing with a copy of my now-recovered source document.
While playing with different ways to insert/paste the Visio work, and
accessing Visio work in other documents by right-clicking them and selecting
Visio Object from the pop-up menu, Framemaker eventually detected a
serious problem and had to quit. This error dialog called out a FrameLog
file (an error log) and instructed me to send the file and a description of
what I did to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have been using the paste method with Visio objects successfully for
almost two years. I realize it is not recommended, but I have never had an
issue until now. And it looks like my previous documents that have one or
more Visio objects inserted in this fashion will suffer the same problem. At
least, all such files I have tested exhibit the same problem -- even just
opening a file that has a Visio object will subject it to this problem.

I sent all the info and the error messages (a longer summary than I've
posted here) to Adobe around 6pm last night. I have not heard from them, and
I probably should not expect to. I have searched Adobe Support for info on
Visio, Internal Error 7204, and other things, but have not found anything
helpful. So I come to you in the Frame using community. Has anyone here
copy/paste Visio into Frame? Have you ever come across this problem? Do you
know a solution?

Thanks in advance.

If you search back through the archives and/or visit the Frame user's
forum on Adobe.com, you'll see that this has been a pretty common
topic since Microsoft released SP3 for XP. They included some security
fixes to OLE that have effectively broken it, at least as far as
managing objects in Frame go.

Only reported fix is backing out of SP3.

Or you can convert the Visio objects to PDF, PNG, or other graphic
files and import them by reference.

May want to nag Microsoft some, if you think that would have an effect. ;- )

Of course, if you're not using XP and haven't installed SP3, something
else is at work, but I didn't see any system or FM version details in
your post. Which would be important in solving the problem if it is
something else.

Re: Import Formats - Document Properties List

2008-06-20 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Jeff:

I haven't tested this, but you might try it and let us know:

* Create an empty MIF file (see the MIF Reference PDF in the
FrameMaker directory).
* Create a new blank FM file.
* Open the MIF file in FM.
* Import formats from the FM file - perhaps one at a time, or all at
once. ***See note below
* Save the receiving file to a new name as MIF.
* Open the MIF file in a text editor, or in FM by holding Ctrl while
choosing Open, then choose Text.
* Examine the MIF to see what properties have been imported.

*** You can save the MIF files of individual-property imports with
identifying names, and compare them with File Utilities Compare
Documents for some clues about exactly what comes in with each type of
imported property.

RE: The Mystery Wrap

2008-06-20 Thread Gagne, Bernard (Bolton)
Hi Frank,
I suspect Distiller is changing your Helvetica to Times New Roman when
you PDF because you do not actually have the Helvetica font on your
system. It is likely residing on your physical printer and Windows is
making available in your Frame font menu. When you print to Adobe PDF,
or save as PDF, it cannot embed a font that is not on your system. Since
the default font for missing fonts is Times New Roman, that is what you
see in the finished PDF.
You need to make Adobe PDF your default printer in FrameMaker. Even if
you had Helvetica installed on your system, the wrapping issue might
persist. This is due to the difference in font metrics between Distiller
and the physical printer. Each interpret font widths and letter spacing
differently, causing lines to wrap unexpectedly.

The first key combination is CTRL + q (lowercase, not Q).
Following that with a curly bracket produces the Ring symbol (an accent

Following CTRL + q with a less-than sign produces the degree symbol.

Re: FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and ...lost image data

2008-06-20 Thread Lise Bible
I had similar error messages with Frame files with OLE links to Excel
spreadsheets, but mostly randomly--sometimes I had the Excel file open by
mistake, and that might have triggered it, I'm not sure. I could never find
the exact cause. Was running Frame 7.1 on XP, SP2.

A colleague told me she got those errors all the time (same OLE links to
Excel files). She's going to be upgrading to Frame 8, but she's getting a
new computer as well, so there are too many variables there to narrow down
one cause if it ends up fixing her problem.

Have upgraded to Frame 8, still XP, SP2. Haven't had it that long, but I
haven't had any error messages so far. Doesn't mean that the upgrade fixed
the problem, though.

Using PDF's or graphics isn't a good fix for me, because we're linking to
parts lists that appear in the product manual and a separate parts book for
the entire product line. The advantage of OLE links to the Excel files is
that it's always linked to the latest and greatest version.

So thanks for the heads-up about SP3. I don't know if our IS dept. will be
rolling that out soon or not. Fortunately, I don't believe there are any
imminent plans to upgrade us to Vista.

May want to nag Microsoft some, if you think that would have an effect. ;-

Of course, if you're not using XP and haven't installed SP3, something
else is at work, but I didn't see any system or FM version details in
your post. Which would be important in solving the problem if it is
 something else.

 Hi Frank,
I suspect Distiller is changing your Helvetica to Times New Roman when
you PDF because you do not actually have the Helvetica font on your

Frank,

In addition to Bernie's comments, you might want to install the SetPrint
plug-in from Sundorne, which will make the Distiller printer your
default within FM, without changing it in your other applications.
(Free and highly recommended.)

http://sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm

Alternatively, you may be able to change a setting in your physical
printer's driver to prevent it from reporting its fonts to Windows. Our
old Lexmark had such a setting, but I'm sure it varies in
name/location/availability by manufacturer and model.

You also asked how to change all fonts in every [tag] to Arial in one
fell swoop.

The only way I know of is to save the file as MIF, open in a text
editor, and do a search/replace, then save and reopen in FM. HOWEVER,
you must take into account the possible variations in your font names
for bold, bolded, oblique, obliqued, etc. There's room for much
complication, depending on the fonts. The names must be exactly
correct, or FM will report fonts not found.

My HP/Compaq nw8000 has given excellent service. The HP Compaq 8710w

Subject: FrameMaker on Windows - Issues Discussed Today

A number of issues associated with Windows have been discussed on this forum
today with relationship to FrameMaker on Windows, Windows itself, running
Windows on MacTel systems with either Bootcamp or Parallels, Vista, and Vista
64.

I was somewhat otherwise occupied when those messages came in and couldn't reply
at the time, but now that I have a few minutes, I thought I would try to kill a
few stones with one bird, so to speak:

(1) WRT/ running FrameMaker 8 (with all current updates) on Vista 64 ...
the system requirements for FrameMaker 8 are mute with regards to support
for 64-bit versions of Windows. It does not say we don't support Vista 64
or for that matter, XP 64. My main desktop system in my office is currently
a Dell Precision Workstation T5400 with dual Xeon 3 ghz quad core processors,
8 GB of main memory, 600 GB of 15000rpm SAS (serially attached SCSI) disk
storage, and a 30 Dell 3007 monitor (2560 x 1600 pixels). It is running
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with Service Pack 1. I have encountered no
problems running FrameMaker 8.0.4 in that environment that I would not have
encountered under Windows XP 32-bit. This is true with BOTH Acrobat Pro 8 and
Acrobat Pro Extended 9 (available soon to the public). In other words, not
only does save as PDF work under Vista 64-bit and Acrobat 8, but there are
no further compatibility problems with Acrobat 9!

Note that under Vista 64, FrameMaker runs as a 32-bit application. There is
absolutely no performance penalty for this (contrary to popular belief).
Although FrameMaker does not take advantage of any 64-bit optimizations
running in this mode, it does gain by (a) a full address space to run under
and (b) the system's ability to use much more real memory which results in
less paging operations to disk. This is especially important if when running
FrameMaker, you also have an e-mail window and few browser windows open and
perhaps are running Photoshop and/or Illustrator in parallel with FrameMaker.

(2) WRT/ Vista itself, I neither own stock in Microsoft nor do I have any
love for their products, but I personally think that Vista has gotten a
bummer rap than it deserves. In having used Vista on two desktop systems
(one 32-bit and the other 64-bit) and one notebook system, I have generally
found it to be quite robust and if you know how to make appropriate system
adjustments (both to the user interface and the infamous UAC - turn it off),
it is really no more quirky than Windows XP, just different quirks! Many of
the complaints are coming from enterprise users:

(a) Too many promises of OS improvements were promised by Microsoft
with Vista, but relatively few, except for security features, were
actually
delivered. Enterprise users were looking for sustentative improvements,
not fluff. Features such as Aero windows styles and XPS have zilch
value
in terms of enterprise productivity.

(b) Enterprise users felt HAD by Microsoft's software maintenance
program introduced at the time of Windows XP that required enterprise
users to pay expensive maintenance fees every year for the right to
upgrade to the next version of Windows and Office that were delayed
several years beyond the point when expected.

(c) Many of the fixes in Service Pack 1, especially those related to
performance and file copying performance, should have been made
available
at least six months earlier than they were. For that matter, those
problems should not have made it out the door.

(d) The Vista Ultimate versions never delivered on Microsoft's
promise
of extra goodies available on a regular basis.

(e) Microsoft spent too much time pressuring peripheral makers on
issues
such as forcing XPS, Microsoft's new color management system, the new
Microsoft image format, and Microsoft job tickets (none of which turned
out
to be relevant to the vast majority of Windows or Vista users) down
their
throats as opposed to simply providing Vista-compatible drivers. Thus,
in
many cases, new drivers, especially for non-PostScript printers and
older
scanners (and similar peripherals) were slow in coming if at all!

(f) Large enterprises are notoriously slow in changing their
standard
software configurations. Many such enterprises have only begun to no
longer
automatically load Windows 2000 on their computers, much less Vista. At
Adobe
we continually have to deal with large customers who are only beginning
to
migrate their corporate

Generally speaking, yes, with almost all of the Windows XP versions
(i.e., Windows XP 64-bit, of course!). You would need Vista 64-bit to
get more than 4GB.

Also, note that, in many cases, there are BIOS (and other uses) of that
memory space as well (for example, video card memory) in that fourth gig
of address space.

Note that there are *other* OS's (64-bit Solaris, etc.) that can run on
these systems and use more memory than 4GB.

Depending upon how much memory is on you video card and the size of various
system BIOS and memory mapped i/o device card buffers, most if not all of the
memory space above 3GB is unavailable for mapping of real memory both for
XP and Vista 32-bit versions. It is the 64-bit versions of Vista on 64-bit

RE: FrameMaker on Windows - Issues Discussed Today

2008-06-20 Thread Dov Isaacs
There is no big secret as to how I justify my configurations. It is fairly
simple.

(1) I buy systems that I plan to use as primary systems for approximately
four
years although Adobe's corporate policy allows engineers to replace systems on a
two or three year basis. I would rather have a system now that really screams
and
that in four years from only begins to show its age in terms of performance.

(2) I do much more that respond to e-mails or simply write. I do some fairly
compute and disk-intensive work with RIP software and graphically-intensive
documents
with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop all while monitoring e-mail and
various web sites.
You need muscle machines (except for the video card) for to reasonably
accomplish this.

(3) When you consider the cost differential of a muscle system versus a
wimp system
on a cost per day basis, especially if I use the system for four years, the
extra cost is really
not a big issue. Unfortunately, most DIlbertian pointy-haired managers and
bean counter
types can't see beyond the tips of their noses when it comes to looking at long
term cost
issues like this.

(4) I never beg for my configuration - I tell'em what I need! :)

Thank you for taking the time to write your e-mails to the Framers E-Mail

Your comment, Large enterprises are notoriously slow in changing their
standard software configurations certainly hits home with me. As a
manager in a large enterprise, I've been trying to upgrade from FrameMaker

well I present my arguments to do so. It all boils down to money and

RE: FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and ...lost image data

2008-06-20 Thread Dov Isaacs
For better or worse, if you simply mailed in the report to Adobe,
don't expect a personal if any response. That mechanism is not
Adobe Tech Support.

For future reference, regardless of what program you publish with
copy-and-paste is about the worst way to set yourself up for disaster
in case your document get lost or mangled.

Pop-up on hypertext in a pdf document

2008-06-20 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I was wondering: in a pdf document generated from FM, can you have a pop-up
appear by clicking on a hypertext link (or something else) set up in FM with I
don't know which setting?

I'm using FM 7.2 on Windows XP / Acrobat 7.0.

Thank you for your help,

Mathieu.

My HP/Compaq nw8000 has given excellent service. The HP Compaq 8710w

How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

2008-06-20 Thread Rene Stephenson
I know what you mean. My largest client's IT UBER-POLICY steers way too many
decisions in my home computing due to our client relationship. If I had *time*
to do it, I'd go pick up all the networking and Cisco certs I could get my
hands on, just so that I could get this stuff jiving the way I need it to work.
They're rolling out Office 2007 on site, and most of the workers initially
gripe about the interface but then find that it's more like hopping into a tub
of hot water: if you sit there long enough, it doesn't *feel* hot anymore.

When I was helping my manager at that site configure his user interface, I saw
a setting to use the "classic" office menus rather than the 2007 "ribbon"
menus, and using that setting plus changing his default file type for save
operations has helped him a lot.

I have found that using Ext ASCII (ALT+numpad combos) is a surer way to get

Wow, where to start...(inserting tongue in cheek). Help's help isn't helpful
because:

1. The help author got boxed into using PDF output to try to
demonstrate the "power" of PDF, when in reality it just reveals the extent of
its limitations when you try to make a purse from a sow's ear.

4. The help author's boss is more interested in saying "yes" to the
project manager and product manager than in trusting what the qualified,
well-trained, and seasoned help author advised would be the end result for the
customer/user.

FrameMaker on Windows - Issues Discussed Today

2008-06-20 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Dov,

Thank you for taking the time to write your e-mails to the Framers E-Mail
List. Your insight and helpfulness is always greatly appreciated.

Your comment, "Large enterprises are notoriously slow in changing their
standard software configurations" certainly hits home with me. As a
manager in a large enterprise, I've been trying to upgrade from FrameMaker
6 for years now. Sometimes I think we will never upgrade, no matter how
well I present my arguments to do so. It all boils down to money and
customer satisfaction. My customers are very happy with my manuals, and
upper management is loathe to spend money to improve a process that
currently works very well.

Obviously, you are a tremendous proposal writer. How you justified the
computer system you use (and a 30" monitor no less) is nothing short of
amazing to me. If I were to put in a request for such a system, I probably
could hear my IS department laughing even though we are at opposite ends

FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and "...lost image data"

I close the error dialog, and then try to close the file ... but I am

FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and "...lost image data"

2008-06-20 Thread Art Campbell

Import Formats - Document Properties List

2008-06-20 Thread Peter Gold
Hi, Jeff:

I haven't tested this, but you might try it and let us know:

* Create an empty MIF file (see the MIF Reference PDF in the
FrameMaker directory).
* Create a new blank FM file.
* Open the MIF file in FM.
* Import formats from the FM file - perhaps one at a time, or all at
once. ***See note below
* Save the receiving file to a new name as MIF.
* Open the MIF file in a text editor, or in FM by holding Ctrl while
choosing Open, then choose Text.

The Mystery Wrap

When converting a framemaker document to an adobe PDF I suddenly get

The only item I can attribute this to is the fact that adobe converts
all the Helvetica fonts in my FM file to Times new roman
Does anybody have any idea :
Why the change to another font?
Why the mystery wrap?
How to change all the fonts in every style to Arial in one fell swoop?

Get ImportFormatsSpecial from Carmen Publishing. It's a low-cost replacement for
the standard Import Formats window that gives you complete control over
everything that can be imported. It comes in very handy when I have to update
only one or two formats, such as user variables, without changing other formats.

Careful -- these shortcuts in FM are case-sensitive, and the symbols are
not identical.

The first key combination is CTRL + q (lowercase, not Q).
Following that with a curly bracket produces the Ring symbol (an accent
used in some languages).
Following CTRL + q with a less-than sign produces the degree symbol.

(If you type one after the other, you'll see there is a difference in
appearance between the ring and the degree symbols.)

FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and "...lost image data"

You also asked how to "change all fonts in every [tag] to Arial in one
fell swoop."

Because you don't have the Helvetica fonts. You could buy them --
adobe.com is one source.

> Why the mystery wrap?

It's not a mystery. Different fonts have different font metrics. You
can't replace Helvetica with Times New Roman (FM's default replacement
for missing fonts) without your whole document reformatting.

> How to change all the fonts in every style to Arial in one fell swoop?

Wouldn't it be better to buy the fonts that the document was intended to
use?

If you insist on making everything Arial:

1. Open Paragraph Designer and select the Default Font tab.
2. Select Commands > Set Window to As Is.
3. Set Family to Arial.
4. Select Commands > Global Update Options.
5. In the dialog box, select Default Font Properties Only and All
Paragraphs and Catalog Entries, and then click Update.

If your structured and unstructured documents use the same paragraph

The Mystery Wrap

2008-06-20 Thread Fred Ridder

Frank Dodd asked (among other questions):

> How to change all the fonts in every style to Arial in one fell swoop?

Others have answered the "how to". All I want to do is make sure
that you really want to do this before you go down that path.

The Arial font was patterned on Helvetica, and was specifically
designed to have nearly identical font metrics (e.g. character widths)
so that it could be substituted for Helvetica with minimal hassle in
cases where the user did not want to pay to license Helvetica (which
is still a proprietary design and licensed intellectual property). So in
the practical, technical sense, you should be able to globally replace
one with the other with minimal impact on your document. But the
problem is that Arial simply doesn't look as good as Helvetica if you
look closely, particularly if you are using it in larger point sizes for
headings and titles. My own approach to the situation you describe
would be to obtain and install a licensed version of Helvetica so that
your PDFs will use the better looking typeface that the document was
designed to use.

As noted previously, Adobe is one source of the Helvetica font. They
sell a "Type Basics" package for US$99 that includes 65 different
PostScript fonts (with the regular, bold, italic, and bold-italic variations
of a typeface counting as four fonts). In that package are the "soft"
versions of the set of 35 fonts that are resident in most modern
PostScript printers, which includes Helvetica, Times, Courier, Avant
Garde, Bookman, Garamond, Palatino, and others. With those soft
fonts in your computer, you can create PDFs that embed the printer-
resident fonts in the PDF itself so that the files can be printed on
any type of printer, PostScript or not, with full font fidelity.

The 8710w is a fantastic system. Omit the BlueRay drive and the cost
isn't particularly bad. And if you take care of it and can get four
years of service out of it (typically what I get out of my notebook

is really minimum. Oh, BTW, I would not recommend XP on the 8710w
given its fairly "new" peripherals that are not particularly well
supported under Vista. (Also, multiple core / multiple core processors
are better utilized by Vista than Windows XP!)

FrameMaker on Windows - Issues Discussed Today

My main desktop system in my office is currently
a Dell Precision Workstation T5400 with dual Xeon 3 ghz quad core processors,
8 GB of main memory, 600 GB of 15000rpm SAS (serially attached SCSI) disk
storage, and a 30" Dell 3007 monitor (2560 x 1600 pixels).
In other words, not
only does "save as PDF" work under Vista 64-bit and Acrobat 8, but there are
no further compatibility problems with Acrobat 9!

(a) Too many promises of OS improvements were promised by Microsoft
with Vista, but relatively few, except for security features, were
actually
delivered. Enterprise users were looking for sustentative improvements,
not fluff. Features such as "Aero windows styles" and XPS have zilch
value
in terms of enterprise productivity.

(d) The Vista Ultimate versions never delivered on Microsoft's
promise
of "extra goodies" available on a regular basis.

(e) Microsoft spent too much time pressuring peripheral makers on
issues
such as forcing XPS, Microsoft's "new" color management system, the new
Microsoft image format, and Microsoft job tickets (none of which turned
out
to be relevant to the vast majority of Windows or Vista users) down
their
throats as opposed to simply providing Vista-compatible drivers. Thus,
in
many cases, new drivers, especially for non-PostScript printers and
older
scanners (and similar peripherals) were slow in coming if at all!

(f) Large enterprises are notoriously slow in changing their
standard
software configurations. Many such enterprises have only begun to no
longer
automatically load Windows 2000 on their computers, much less Vista. At
Adobe
we continually have to deal with large customers who are only beginning
to
migrate their corporate fleets

FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and "...lost image data"

2008-06-20 Thread Brian Weis
Mae culpa! I am so sorry I did not provide those details. I must not have
copied them over from my message to Adobe. Thanks so much, Art, for pointing
out the omission!

I am using Adobe FrameMaker 7.2b144
Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003 (11.8207.8202) SP3
and
MS Windows XP ... SP3!

Sometimes I do convert Visio drawings to other formats, but there are times
when the best results come from simply pasting the Visio elements directly
into Frame. So I would like to retrieve that functionality.

Your comments make sense because my machine recently downloaded updates and
restarted. So, it looks like I should try backing out of SP3 today. I'll
probably have better luck with that than with nagging MS. :)

Thanks again!

FrameMaker Internal Error -- Visio and "...lost image data"

2008-06-20 Thread Brian Weis
I just wanted to express my thanks to Art Campbell. I removed SP3 from my
machine and I once again have full Visio pasting functionality.

I did post a comment on Microsoft's website under the SP3 write-up regarding
this issue. It's not a nag, but at least I let them know their update was
causing problems.

Thanks again, Art!

The 8710w is a fantastic system. Omit the BlueRay drive and the cost
isn't particularly bad. And if you take care of it and can get four
years of service out of it (typically what I get out of my notebook
systems), the extra cost per day compared to el'cheapo configurations
is really minimum. Oh, BTW, I would not recommend XP on the 8710w
given its fairly "new" peripherals that are not particularly well
supported under Vista. (Also, multiple core / multiple core processors
are better utilized by Vista than Windows XP!)

Import Formats - Document Properties List

Rick,
Does your ImportsFormatsSpecial have an option to clean the existing
properties, like CleanImport does?
Without that, you just keep adding properties instead of cleaning
up which in many cases may be what you want, but I usually prefer
to start with empty catalogs.

How FM use impacts purchasing decisions

2008-06-20 Thread Dov Isaacs
Depending upon how much memory is on you video card and the size of various
system BIOS and memory mapped i/o device card buffers, most if not all of the
memory space above 3GB is unavailable for mapping of real memory both for
XP and Vista 32-bit versions. It is the 64-bit versions of Vista on 64-bit
versions of
Intel and AMD processors that removes that restriction. In other words, Vista 32
won't help you on this.

Argh! Above, I meant to say "EXCEPT windows XP 64-bit, of course!". Of
course, I would not recommend Windows XP 64-bit right now ... would be
better to go with Vista 64-bit since drivers are more likely to be made

If you haven't hit save since then, you might try renaming the .backup.fm file
to a different name and open that as a way to get back to the pre-goof point.
Alternatively, if you have ANY other documents or templates that have the new
"Code text" tag, you can import it via CleanImport and map it to the old "Code"
tag.

I made a newbie mistake this morning. I needed to change text that had
formatting from a deleted character tag. The old tag was "Code." The new
tag is "Code text." I opened the replace dialog and configured it. As
soon as I hit the button, I knew what happened. I had created a loop
that performed almost 2 million changes before I could get to the escape
key.

character formatting and x-ref'd text

2008-06-20 Thread Milan Davidovic
File A has a paragraph. Some text in this paragraph is formatted with
a character tag. In File B, I create a <$paratext> type x-ref to bring
in this paragraph. The character formatting, however, doesn't appear.
Files A and B have indentical formats, etc. (imported from A into B
just to make sure).

I'm looking at some legacy document in which the character formatting
does come across in the x-ref'd text, but I can't see how to make it
happen in my File B. What can I check to see where the difference is
between the two?

Many thanks...

FrameMaker on Windows - Issues Discussed Today

Unfortunately, most "DIlbertian" pointy-haired managers and
bean counter
types can't see beyond the tips of their noses when it comes to looking at long
term cost
issues like this.

(4) I never beg for my configuration - I tell'em what I need! :)

If I were to put in a request for such a system, I probably
could hear my IS department laughing even though we are at opposite ends
of the building.

Again, thank you for taking the time to monitor and respond to the Framers

ANN: Heavy duty indexing

2008-06-20 Thread Rick Quatro
Hello Framers,

I just finished a big index project for a client. The index has 50 sections
in a single FrameMaker document. Like a regular generated document, each
entry is hyperlinked back to its source.

The text that needs to be indexed is formatted with a particular character
tag. As the script encounters each text range, its target index section is
identified by a regular expression. The required data, including sort
information, for each entry is loaded into a database. Then the script does
a series of queries on the database to build the final index.

Previously this huge index was done by hand because there was no feasible
way to do it with multiple marker types and generated documents. I mention
this here for those that may have labor-intensive tasks that don't have an
easy FrameMaker solution. With FrameScript, many of these "impossible tasks"
can be fully automated. If you need more information, please contact me
offlist.
