be able to back-save to a MIF format that 6 could (probably) open.

Yes, that's all that should be required, with the provisio that 8
features that weren't in 6 (such as unicode support) are going to be
inoperative if anyone should open it in 6 again. My own personal
disclaimer: I'm just talking about file formats here, not SGML / XML /

I completely agree with Ankur. Solid PDF Tools is perfect for converting up to
100 pages documents. We are using it in our organization. However, it fails
miserably when asked to cover longish and complex documents.

to turn on View Text Symbols and look for a Tab character (looks something

The project specification says Framemaker 6 + SGML. If FM 8 can handle
