I've been a sporadic user of Framemaker but trying to learn more about it in case a job pops up that needs it. I have version 8 as part of the Adobe Technical Communication Suite. Well, a job did pop up, but it needs version 6 + SGML. Since I'm a licensed user, is it possible to get an earlier

I suppose this is a dangerous question, but why do you think you need 6? FM 8 in Structured mode should open the 6 files nicely. And you should be able to back-save to a MIF format that 6 could (probably) open. Other than that, eBay. Art Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com ...

Yes, that's all that should be required, with the provisio that 8 features that weren't in 6 (such as unicode support) are going to be inoperative if anyone should open it in 6 again. My own personal disclaimer: I'm just talking about file formats here, not SGML / XML / other structure elements

I think that you should find out if they are creating SGML/XML files. If they are, then you need only save in that format. Saving in FM binary format wouldn't be necessary. If they are using FM binary then you can save backwards, or as MIF. Again if they are working in structured formats then

Hi all, I normally would never contradict Jeremy or Dov, but I don't think it's fair to say that PDF is designed to create manuals only for printing. In the olden days, yes, but not now. We provide all our docs in PDF to our customers, but we designed our manuals to be used primarily on line.

For the record, I NEVER said that PDF was designed to create manuals only for printing, but rather, that it is indeed a final form file format. That implies neither just printing nor just viewing. It does imply a fairly static document layout, though, with the possibility of limited interactivity.

Hi all, I have a table where the whole table jumps to start at the page that follows the table's insertion page, so leaving a blank page. So the table's anchor point is left at the top of the blank page, and the actual table itself starts at the top of the next page. What is going wrong?

How large are the cells that start off the table? If there's lots of content in the cells, and they're configured to Keep With Next... they will. Lots of times, in order to allow page breaks, you need to manually break large cells into multiple smaller ones (and remove rules, so they appear to be

I'm not sure if I'm understanding the problem, but it may be a tab character that is in front of one of the heading2 paragraphs in your content. Be sure to turn on View Text Symbols and look for a Tab character (looks something like this ) in your content. ~ Linda G.
