off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

2010-10-15 Thread Jo Watkiss
Framers, I know this is way off topic - but knowing how much knowledge
there is on here, I'm hoping somebody can point me to a good resource or
forum to help.

I'm trying to get vector images from Solidworks e-drawings into
FrameMaker and then to PDF. However in the resulting PDF, the vectors
draw so slowly on the page that it is causing problems for our readers.

The path we are taking is:

Print from e-drawings to .ps file

Open .ps file in CorelDraw and save as .eps (or .wmf or .pdf - the end
result is the same)

Import .eps into Frame and then make PDF as normal

I think the source of the problem is the original .ps files, because
they are so complex (some images have 38,000+ objects in them).

If anybody knows how I can achieve better results, or can direct me to a
more appropriate forum or user group, I'd be very grateful.

Thanks,

Jo Watkiss

I used to convert CAD drawings to PDF, and then import them into FM.
It worked beautifully. You could try that.

2010-10-15 Thread Art Campbell
Sounds like the entire drawing is being converted (which with
thousands of components is a lot of layers), but you only really need
the skin or outer layer.

You'll probably have to have one of the CAD guys toggle that on or off
before they generate the PDF.

I'd also look on the Solidworks site for file viewers and browsers.
Most CAD outfits offer these for free, and many of them can generate a
PDF (if not automagically, by printing to the Acrobat printer, and
that's likely to be a version you can use.

Re: off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

2010-10-15 Thread Jim Owens
I had to bring in a Solidworks file for an illustration recently. I
tried it a few ways. If I recall correctly, I ended up printing from
Solidworks to Adobe PDF. In my case, I had to open the PDF in
Illustrator for some edits and then save it again as PDF. Then I brought
the PDF into the Frame doc.

I don't notice any delay when viewing a PDF of the document created from
Frame, but then I don't think the document is as complex. I used a
section view of the 3D Solidworks object.

setting up technical documentation workflow from scratch : about DocZone

2010-10-15 Thread de Rouck, Tom (Gent)
Hi Wim, Jakobsen,

I just wanted to add a small hint: if you're really going to choose DocZone
because of its integrated translation support, please think twice.
They're not ready yet... We are doing a translation job for the moment in that
tool and a lot of programming work is still to be done (again, I only speak
about the translation side).

Hi,

You're lucky to be able to set this up from scratch! Don't make the mistake to
choose a tool before you have defined your goals and requirements. Also be
careful for vendor lock in. Go for open standards and flexible solutions.

If you go for XML remember that there are many XML editing tools.

You should definitely take a look at the Adobe Technical Communication Suite

- this doesn't comprise a database but it has all the tools you need to create,
review and manage technical docs.

If you want a database you probably end up with a structured approach based on
DITA. FrameMaker and the Adobe TCS are fully capable of handling DITA topics
from a database.

Further check out: Alfresco with Componize, Ixiasoft DITA CMS, DocZone (with
integrated translation support), Author-IT, the MadCap Flare suite,
HelpManual, the Danish based DITA Exchange solution on Sharepoint or in case
you're not tight on budget SDL Trisoft. (just google for the URLs)

Some of these work with FrameMaker, some don't (out of the box) and these are
not all DITA but in all cases DITA compliant if needed.

I am about to author a small report on setting up a technical documentation
workflow from scratch.

I need to devise a setup where a group of author can write tech docs, another
group maintain and translate the docs and publish them as pdf.

It is vital that the process can be thought within a technogy which allows for
later integration with publishing to web as well.

I have taken a look at Woodwings serverbased solution which uses InDesign as
publishing frontend, but I would like to see whether I can accomplish the same
using FrameMaker. I suppose I must look for a kind of database drive solution
where the authors write into a database.

I have taken a look on a couple of database publishing solutions:

Patternstream, Sabern, FrameMaker Server but some of these solutions looks
strangely dated when one merely looks at their websites. Sabern uses product
images from FrameMaker 5.5. Patternstream recommends in FrameMaker 8 in a news
release dated 2007. Adobes documentation for FrameMaker Server seems to be non
existent - even a tutorial links to some very quaint and useless course on a
server not even belonging to Adobe.

My question is: Am I looking in the wrong places? Can somebody reccommend
products which will help me streamline the process?

Jakobsen

2010-10-15 Thread Rick Quatro
Hi Jo,

I would try a different path. Go directly from the drawing's .ps file to
PDF, then import the PDF into FrameMaker, then go to PDF from FrameMaker.
This may give you better results and it would avoid the unnecessary step of
using CorelDraw.

2010-10-15 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi Jo

Indeed, I think the drawings are too complex to be rendered fast onscreen
(in PDF). I've had a similar problem a couple of years ago with an
Illustrator vector graphic which had A LOT of gradient fills.

We fixed the problem by saving the graphic as a pixel image (.png) instead
of a vector graphic.

RE: Framemaker desktop to Framemaker Server, Adobe Content Server, Sharepoint, and Sitecore

2010-10-15 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
I'd be a bit skeptical about this solution - it sounds like the client would
be doing all their authoring in Frame; changing a bunch of users who author in
Word and get them to author in structured Frame would be a big change. It
sounds like a lot of overkill to me. They probably would be happier with you
developing different output formats that work better with websites (like
WebHelp or browser-based AIR help).

Subject: Framemaker desktop to Framemaker Server, Adobe Content Server,
Sharepoint, and Sitecore

Fellow Framers,

Background: I'm an independent business owner who manages the publication and
maintenance of large suites of documentation for clients using unstructured
Framemaker and Acrobat via Adobe TechComm Suite loaded on a Windows7 desktop.
{whew!} All files are stored on my own local computers, and I have
well-developed workflow, backup, and version control systems in place. One
particular long-time client produces standards and specifications that regulate
a branch of the transportation industry. The documents are developed at a
committee level and given to me in whatever format they are most comfortable
using for knowledge transfer; usually Word or PDF markup. I have never seen a
need for this client to consider an XML output, and my client would probably
resist the recommendation if I made it. My product is PDF files.

Problem: This client needs to develop a more robust ecommerce solution for
their documents. Currently the docs are distributed via hardcopy or as PDFs via
CD and subscription download. This client's parent company has enlisted the
services of a Web development company who is recommending that my client employ
some combination of Framemaker Server, Adobe Content Server, Sharepoint, and
Sitecore. I haven't quite figured out yet what that combination might be
because today was the first I've heard about it. The good news is that my
client is requiring my presence and input even in the early discussions about
this project. I want my input to be valuable and to represent my client's best
interests, and I want to be able to help steer them through all of this.

Questions: I have done some preliminary digging into Framemaker Server and
Adobe Content Server. I have a fair grasp of Sharepoint's capabilities, and
zero knowledge about Sitecore. I have minimal experience with Framemaker's
structured environment, although I've taken several workshops. I'd like to hear
from any of you whose Framemaker documentation cycle involves any combination
of these products. Did that involvement require a transition from a desktop
environment to a server environment? How has it changed your workflow? As an
independent business, what changes did you need to make to your own office
computing set-up? How did Framemaker behave?
What is the relationship of these products to one another and to Framemaker?
What were the benefits? What were the consequences?

These may not be the right questions to ask, but I was a bit broad-sided by the
Web development company's sudden discussion of these tools, and I know that
this group of Framers can be gentle with folks who haven't learned enough yet
to ask intelligent questions. If there are better questions to ask, I know I
can trust you to suggest them.

RE: off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

2010-10-15 Thread Alison Craig
Jo:

I am currently incorporating SolidWorks (2009) mechanical drawings into an
unstructured FM 9 Service Manual. I have not yet created a PDF of the entire
book, but a PDF of a sample drawing page, opens quite quickly.

This is my process:

My mechanical engineer creates the drawings from a full rendition of our
product - which is massively complex and involves dozens of SolidWorks files.
However, when he has completed the view I need, he saves it directly to a much
simpler AI file.

I use Illustrator and convert the AI to an EPS and add all the markings I need
re: part numbers, tool types, etc.

The original AI file is maybe 1MB in size (the final EPS is larger) and whether
in AI or EPS format, it allows me to manipulate any line within the drawing (I
believe this is a function of SolidWorks 2009. In earlier versions, the
Mechanical engineer had to manipulate the drawing for me as it was not nearly
as AI friendly).

I then import the finished EPS by reference into the file I want (each drawing
is a separate file, although they are all part of the same Appendix in the
Book).

So far, I have no complaints with performance when I open a single sample
drawing saved to PDF, although I think my completed Service Manual PDF will
likely end up being huge.

False, at least as of a few months ago. You can also buy an annual

Bill,

Pricing for ePublisher settled down more than a year ago. Changes were
made to the EULA to allow folks to purchase just what they need, no
more, no less. Express seats are a cheaper alternative for folks who
just have to run conversion without designing targets. Those go for
$295 per year. And finally, with our change over to a contract
licensing model, you have full control over who uses the seats you do
purchase. They are yours to use and abuse as you like.

Again, all of this related to WebWorks ePublisher. If you are thinking
about have things were done for WebWorks Publisher a few years back,
you'd see things are quite different now.

2010-10-15 Thread Davis, Jessica D.
Jo,

I import drawing files from engineering and I don't have the problem you
are describing; however, I don't know if my process will solve your
problem. They typically deliver the files in DWG format. I open them
with Illustrator and save them as EPS files. I then import them into
Frame and I generate PDFs from the Frame files. Sometimes they give me
the drawings in PDF format and I can import them into Frame directly;
however, I notice that Frame slows down considerably when I import the
PDF vs importing the EPS.

Thanks,

On the Table Designer Ruling tab, you should Dotted as one of the ruling
options. Select it for all the column and body row rulings, and something solid
for all the outside rulings.

If you don't like the dot pattern, open the Custom Ruling and Shading dialog,
select Dotted, and click Edit Ruling Style. Either modify the existing Dotted
or create a new style by changing the name.

Hmm, learn something new every day.

But, I'm not getting anything that really looks dotted in print. It looks
dotted on screen in FM, but prints as light gray. May do the job, but not
quite dotted.

I did see the post about editing the MIF, but I'm not undertaking that at
this late stage.

OK, you can create one.

1) In the Custom Ruling and Shading dialog's Apply Ruling Style list, select
None and click Edit Ruling Style.

2) In the Edit Ruling Style dialog, enter Dotted (or any name you want) in
the Name box.

3) Set Pen Pattern to something less than 100% and click Set.

4) Select some table cells and, in the Edit Ruling Style dialog, apply
Dotted (or whatever you named it) to some borders.

5) Evaluate the results.

If necessary, repeat using a different Pen Pattern setting (and maybe Width)
until you like the result. Or at least can live with it. :-)

Tip for testing S/W

2010-10-15 Thread Stuart Rogers
We're in the process of testing some new software here, and I just
published internally a little time-saving tip for our testers. I think
I've posted it here before, too, but thought it might be time to repeat it:

If you receive an error message when you are testing Windows-based
software, try pressing CTRL + C before dismissing the message. This
command may succeed in copying the message content to the clipboard, so
that you can paste it into your feedback to the development team. (You
can do a quick test by pasting into Notepad; the method does work in
Windows XP.)

off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

Most CAD outfits offer these for free, and many of them can generate a
PDF (if not automagically, by printing to the Acrobat printer, and
that's likely to be a version you can use.

off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

We are doing a translation job for the moment in that
tool and a lot of programming work is still to be done (again, I only speak
about the translation side).

regards,

Tom

Further check out: Alfresco with Componize, Ixiasoft DITA CMS, DocZone (with
integrated translation support), Author-IT, the MadCap Flare suite,
Help, the Danish based DITA Exchange solution on Sharepoint or in case
you're not tight on budget SDL Trisoft. (just google for the URLs)

Some of these work with FrameMaker, some don't (out of the box) and these are
not all DITA but in all cases DITA compliant if needed.

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed

Can somebody reccommend
products which will help me streamline the process?

regards

Jakobsen

Hi Jo,

I would try a different path. Go directly from the drawing's .ps file to
PDF, then import the PDF into FrameMaker, then go to PDF from FrameMaker.
This may give you better results and it would avoid the unnecessary step of
using CorelDraw.

Framemaker desktop to Framemaker Server, Adobe Content Server, Sharepoint, and Sitecore

2010-10-15 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
I'd be a bit skeptical about this "solution" - it sounds like the client would
be doing all their authoring in Frame; changing a bunch of users who author in
Word and get them to author in structured Frame would be a big change. It
sounds like a lot of overkill to me.

If there are better questions to ask, I know I
can trust you to suggest them.

off topic: e-drawings, eps files, frame and pdf

2010-10-15 Thread Alison Craig
Jo:

I am currently incorporating SolidWorks (2009) mechanical drawings into an
unstructured FM 9 Service Manual. I have not yet created a PDF of the entire
book, but a PDF of a sample drawing page, opens quite quickly.

This is my process:

"My" mechanical engineer creates the drawings from a full rendition of our
product - which is massively complex and involves dozens of SolidWorks files.

Thanks,

Jo Watkiss

Sometimes they give me
the drawings in PDF format and I can import them into Frame directly;
however, I notice that Frame slows down considerably when I import the
PDF vs importing the EPS.

Thanks,
Jess

On the Table Designer Ruling tab, you should Dotted as one of the ruling
options. Select it for all the column and body row rulings, and something solid
for all the outside rulings.

If you don't like the dot pattern, open the Custom Ruling and Shading dialog,
select Dotted, and click Edit Ruling Style. Either modify the existing Dotted
or create a new style by changing the name.

In Custom Ruling and Shading, the Apply Ruling Style list doesn't contain an
entry called "Dotted"?

OK, you can create one.

1) In the Custom Ruling and Shading dialog's Apply Ruling Style list, select
None and click Edit Ruling Style.

2) In the Edit Ruling Style dialog, enter "Dotted" (or any name you want) in
the Name box.

3) Set Pen Pattern to something less than 100% and click Set.

4) Select some table cells and, in the Edit Ruling Style dialog, apply "Dotted"
(or whatever you named it) to some borders.

5) Evaluate the results.

If necessary, repeat using a different Pen Pattern setting (and maybe Width)
until you like the result. Or at least can live with it. :-)

Hmm, learn something new every day.

But, I'm not getting anything that really looks dotted in print. It looks
dotted on screen in FM, but prints as light gray. May do the job, but not
quite dotted.

I did see the post about editing the MIF, but I'm not undertaking that at

Tip for testing S/W

2010-10-15 Thread Stuart Rogers
We're in the process of testing some new software here, and I just
published internally a little time-saving tip for our testers. I think
I've posted it here before, too, but thought it might be time to repeat it:

If you receive an error message when you are testing Windows-based
software, try pressing CTRL + C before dismissing the message. This
command may succeed in copying the message content to the clipboard, so
that you can paste it into your feedback to the development team. (You
can do a quick test by pasting into Notepad; the method does work in
Windows XP.)
